A dysfunctional, paranoid and beautiful mind

The Yellow Wallpaper by Charlotte Perkins Gilman is a very captivating story, it has been published back in the year 1899 by Small & Maynard, Boston, MA. It is written in the first person and it tells a very interesting story about a paranoid schizophrenic woman. The woman doesn’t know much about her mental disorder, her husband John who’s a physician, convinced her not to give it too much thought because it would only bring her pain and aggravate her situation.

The story’s setting is in a beautiful, isolated and perhaps silent house with a delicious garden as described by the protagonist in the following quotes, “ The most beautiful place! It is quite alone standing well back from the road, quite three miles from the village”. “ There is a delicious garden! I never saw such a garden”. It is a beautiful house, but the protagonist feels as if there is something strange about the house. ” I am afraid, but I don’t care — there is something strange about the house — I can feel it “.

Throughout the story, the woman is showing signs of a mental disorder, for instance when she said, “ I didn’t realize for a long time what the thing was that showed behind, that dim sub-pattern, but now I am quite sure it is a woman”. Another sign of her sickness is when she said, “Sometimes I think there are a great many women behind, and sometimes only one, and she crawls around fast, and her crawling shakes it all over”. These hallucinations of hers are getting worse as time goes by, she is continuously losing touch with reality and she knows it because she said, “ It is getting to be a great effort for me to think straight. Just this nervous weakness I suppose”. The woman knows about her disconnection with reality, however, she is trying to figure out what is real and what is not.

“ The faint figure behind seemed to shake the pattern, just as if she wanted to get out. I got up softly and went to feel and see if the paper did move, and when I came back John was awake ”, this is an example from the story about how confusing and in some cases scary paranoid schizophrenia can be. One of the symptoms of this mental disorder is included in its full name, paranoia. The protagonist is showing signs of paranoia when she starts to see her husband who cares for her and is doing everything he can to make her well, as the antagonist of the story. “ The fact is I am getting a little afraid of John.He seems very queer sometimes ”, this is an example of how despite her husband best efforts to shield her and care for her, she often sees him as an oppressor.

The protagonist has a mental disorder, her husband is a physician trying his best to cure her illness. Her husband is controlling her day to day life, by suppressing some of the pleasures of her life. Such as when he prevents her from visiting friends and family, and even prevents her from going outside in order to improve her health. Some readers may judge the husband on the way he handles the situation, they may think the husband is patronizing his wife.  In some ways, those readers would be right, because of how the husband often ignores what his wife thinks and tells her he knows best because he’s a physician. Those readers would also be wrong in some ways because a physician job is to tell their patients what to do on a day to day basis for them to get better.

Reading response to Girl

Girl by Jamaica Kincaid, is an interesting story, despite the lack of imagination used to write it. The protagonist in this story is a girl who is being told how to do things, how not to do them, and the things that are not supposed to be done. The protagonist is essentially being told how to live her life. The story can be said to have been based on how girls were always being told how to behave and what to do in the old days.

The protagonist in the story to me, is not a character, to me, the protagonist represents all the girls who are constantly being told how to do things and how to live their lives. The “person” who keeps telling the protagonist in this story how to live their lives, to me, represents society’s invisible and wicked hold on all the girls around it. The quotes “ don’t sing benna in Sunday school” and “ don’t eat fruits on the street ” are two great examples of how controlling that “person” is, in this case that “person” is to be considered the antagonist. These quotes can also be viewed as a direct reflection on certain rules for girls given by certain societies. “ don’t sing benna in Sunday school ” can be interpreted as a direct reflection of how girls are supposed to behave in public. “ don’t eat fruits on the street ” can also be interpreted as a direct reflection of what girls are not supposed to do in public.

I’ve noticed there were no mention that just like girls are being told how to live their lives, boys are also being told how to live theirs. Society also has a hold on boys, telling them how to behave, what to do and not do. The quote “ always eat your food in such a way that it won’t turn someone else’s stomach ” can be used to tell boys or girls how to chew their foods properly. The story is lacking diversity, because it is one sided, however, the story should not be evaluated based on its diversity of genders, because after all, the title of the story is Girl.

The girl representing all the girls being told what to do, and the “person” telling the girl what to do is societies hold on that girl, are simply my interpretations of the stories meaning. An alternate and simpler interpretation of the story is that the girl is the daughter of the person telling her how to live her life. The parents of the girl are telling her how to do things, giving her the necessary knowledge about how to behave in the society they are living in. Giving the girl instructions on how to become a good and productive member of society. In this interpretation, the parents would only be doing what they are supposed to do as parents.

There are several ways to understand and interpret the story, but the two most appealing and interesting ways of doing so, according to me, are the ways I’ve done it.

English 2001 Intro To Literature

Hello everyone, my name is Jordan, I am a sophomore at Citytech, my major is Liberal Arts and Sciences. I currently am a member of the Bridges Scholars Program at Citytech. By being in this program, I get to conduct research with my mentors on topics related to Biology, Psychology and Chemistry. Beginning this fall, I will be working with my mentor of Psychology on how virtual reality headsets affects the human brain while focusing on measuring and analyzing  the emotional aspects of it. In the Program, I also get to go on field trips to botanical gardens, museums, etc.  Sometimes I even get to present the research I’ve been working on to other mentors , scientists and people that are interested in these science fields.  I plan on getting my associates degree from Citytech right before I transfer into Brooklyn college for a Bachelor in Biology. I also plan on getting my masters in Biology, for a better understanding of the field, also, right after I get my master, I plan on registering  into Medical School to pursue my long term goal of becoming a Cardiologist.
