Final Write-up Terraforming

I will be discussing a science fiction creation called Terraforming. Terraforming which means “Earth-Shaping” is an idea taken from science fiction and mixed with real science. It basically deals with modifying another planet’s atmosphere, temperature, and surface to be similar or exactly like earth. It makes other planets habitable by Human beings, and any type of plant life of our own planet. Touching on the history of terraforming, and its current capabilities I want to then dive into the moral and ethical issues people raise when dealing with changing other worlds to fit humanity’s needs. “Some people consider the idea of terraforming Mars heretical – humanity playing God,” said by Dr. Zubrin an American Aerospace Engineer. He went on further to state that “others would see in such an accomplishment the most profound vindication of the divine nature of the human spirit, exercised in its highest form to bring a dead world to life”. People see it as favoring human interests and could possibly lead to the extinction of indigenous extraterrestrial life, or the Interplanetary contamination. We don’t know what’s really out there in our universe we have already brought our own planet to its knees, and possibly beyond the point of no return to some critics. Humanity has also driven to extinction to many animals and sentient beings on our very own planet, and bringing that to another world isn’t ethical. Touching on its ethical aspects I will provide detailed explanation on what exactly are the ethics behind terraforming, and what groups these ethical constructs belong to.

My main goal is to try and answer the question why we want to terraform another planet to fit humanity’s needs. Why does Humanity want to leave the earth, so badly, and not want to fix what we have done to our own planet before searching for another? Is our planet earth really too far gone to save, or is it more cost effective to invade and terraform another? Science fiction has dealt with the idea of leaving earth and making other planet earth like to hold life, I want to research the idea why the writers wanted to start their stories on other planets. In finding out why in reality we want to leave earth, I can find understanding why writers want us to explore it.

Terraforming Write-up

I would like to discuss a science fiction creation called Terraforming. Terraforming which means “Earth-Shaping” is an idea taken from science fiction and mixed with real science. It basically deals with modifying another planet’s atmosphere, temperature, and surface to be similar or exactly like earth. It makes other planets habitable by Human beings, and any type of planet life from our own planet. The major questions i would like the answer would be why we want to terraform other planets, and what exactly terraforming is. I would also like to explore what we would gain from this technology. And through this technology what would Humanity gain in the end if we decide to look outside saving our planet for survival, and towards changing another to fit us.

Terraforming Not sure where else to go

I have come to a Dead end with my proposal currently, I’m thinking that i need to do a lot more research than i’m currently doing in order for me to find other aspects of my idea to touch on. I’m going to do more research on Elon Musk The owner of Tesla Motors, and his proposals and ideas on colonizing mars. I believe reading some articles about what he wants to do and his reasons why will give me more insight as to why Humanity wants to leave the planet and colonize others. It will also give me some insight into the technology being developed just for his ideas. I haven’t changed my proposal because i literally do not know what else i need to add, so ill leave it alone bringing more resources i annotated to my meeting to see where else i can go with my proposal. To summarize my project circle around the idea of Terraforming and why Humanity has this need or dream to leave earth and colonize other planets, is this ethical or unethical. I will want to claim that it is ethical under specific circumstances dealing with if said planet has life etc. Currently I have looked at a few sources and i haven’t narrowed them perfectly down to things i want to list as something i want to quote and draw from, they mostly deal with ideas and the possibility. The sources i have listed i will draw from but i want to use at least three or four more to add to the knowledge of this concept.  My next steps will be to get the final guidance needed in my meeting so i can finalize my proposal, i believe I’m missing one aspect i need to touch on and research but it isn’t coming to me, with further research and guidance i believe i will find what I’m looking for.

My proposal (I haven’t changed it)

For my Archive project, I would like to discuss a science fiction creation called Terraforming. The term was coined by Jack Williamson in a science-fiction story (Collision Orbit) published during 1942 in Astounding Science Fiction. The idea of Terraforming isn’t a new subject, but now it’s a reality. I want to discuss the Science fiction concept as it moves into real life, and how it is capable today. I wasn’t to give a brief explanation of its history from its conception to today and what exactly we want to do with this idea. “Nevertheless current research suggests that humanity possesses the technical capacity (though perhaps not the economic capacity) to begin the process of terraforming the planet Mars” (On the Moral Permissibility of Terraforming). Currently, we are researching the possibility of Terraforming Mars so it can have our first space colony, it’s capable but it is costly it would take the majority of the worlds governments to band together and fund such an endeavor. The idea has many ethical issues with it as well as people see it as Invading another land and stealing what isn’t ours and taking its resources.
Humanity has also driven to extinction to many animals and sentient beings on our very own planet, and bringing that to another world isn’t ethical.
My final subject to end my terraforming proposal is to try and answer the question why we want to terraform another planet to fit humanity’s needs. Why does Humanity want to leave earth so badly, and not want to fix what we have done to our own planet before searching for another? Is our planet earth really too far gone to save, or is it more cost effective to invade and terraform another? Science fiction has dealt with the idea of leaving earth and making other planets earth like to hold life, I want to research the idea why writers wanted to start their stories on other planets. It could deal with the current political, or social environment the writers were living in at the time making them dream of leaving this planet. In conclusion, my project will deal with the idea of terraforming, its ethical issues, its history as a whole, and what is Humanities next steps in building on this idea taken straight from science fiction.

Terraforming a Science Fiction proposal

Reflection:

My proposal was originally dealing with the idea of a hyper space and scientific advancements that made their way into real life, stemming from Science fiction. It began with hyper space and branched off into hyper drives, space colonization and terraforming. My original idea was too broad of a topic and touched on too many topics at once to build a solid project proposal. In the peer review I got a lot of great feedback on what direction I should take, the most I heard was dealing with the idea of why do people think we should leave earth and colonize another planet, and why do science fiction authors always talk about the earth being in a state of destruction or it was destroyed previously causing the inhabitants to relocate to another planet. It could deal with what the authors were currently going through in their lives at the time their books were written possible political or social problems making them want to escape to another world and start over. I found it an interesting concept so I decided to focus more on the terraforming aspect, and I will also briefly touch on space colonization if I can expand on that topic further while touching the major points of my project. The comments I heard in the work shop were similar to the comments posted on my first proposal blog so it gave it an idea to pin point rather quickly. I’m prepared for another round because I think I might have gut my project too much giving me less to talk about. I believe I can add another aspect I wanted to touch on before, or maybe dive deeper into the aspects of terraforming and what progress we have made today in 2016.

From Science Fiction To Real life.

I want to do a Research project based around Scientific advancements pulled straight out the ideas in science fiction books. The reason I want to do this because in the near future we are going to be able to do things people could only dream about in the many science fiction novels we have read throughout our lives. All it took was the idea of another world to make someone go into their lab and craft the very idea they read about when they were children, and I find it a very cool concept. I don’t want to end up listing different inventions that ended up becoming real because you wouldn’t actually learn anything so i want to focus more on the space travel aspect, and the colonization of different worlds. My first portion of my project will deal with analyzing the concept of Hyperspace and where it was first created, then ill expand that into the real life concept and tests done to make it a reality. After the hyperspace concept has been explained i want to move into planetary colonization, which would only be possible if we had the ability to master Hyperspace (which generally drastically decreases the time it takes to travel from one point to another in space). Hyperspace would turn the average trip to Mars from two and a half years to months, or even days. It took the fastest rocket we had to make a 9.5-year voyage to Pluto and its moons, this trip could be turned into a year with the use of Hyper space. This would also open the possibility of travel to planets further out in the solar system, even exploration of other galaxies. I also want to touch on the idea of terraforming which is another science fiction concept being brought to real life.  In the near future our plan is to travel to mars and terraform it to be able to hold Human life without a spacesuit. If we are able to terraform Mars the idea of space colonies will be a possibility, and all the comics books you read about Humans expanding into known space and the unknown leaving earth behind will be real. We are in the age where these things are possible, the ideas and the equipment are being Built and refined. First is mars, then the rest of the solar system.

My Reflection

My general knowledge I would say has improved when I look at science fiction text from before I stepped foot into the class until now. I actually want to write a science fiction novel, and I’ve been working on it in my creative writing class. The readings and discussions have opened my mind so I notice a lot more when doing my own personal readings, the many ideas were thrown around in class have to lead me to conclusions I would have never come to myself just analyzing the text. I’m actually grateful for the many different ideas my classmates bring up during our discussions I have learned a lot even strengthened my vocabulary from listening to them speak and articulate their ideas. I have to say every class there’re an interesting subject people have very different interpretations of that leave me with a better understanding when I leave the room. I have also learned a lot more about science fiction as a whole in general, through in class discussions and my own out of class research. The Idea of a Utopia, dystopia and Utopian work I never thought about or even really read about I found very interesting, and the work we have done makes me want to read more books about the concept. I would also like to try and tie it into the story I’ve been developing for a while now giving it an interesting setting. The way we have learned to critically analyze work I can use in just about any subject especially how you taught us a different way of writing essays by putting the thesis in the conclusion. I found that very interesting and makes the writing a whole lot easier if you use your ideals to build the thesis last after finding the proof. I haven’t actually been in a writing class in almost 3 years since I can’t into college with all my English credits already, taking these classes has woken up the writer in me. I have to relearn a lot to improve my writing abilities, it’s a slow process so far but I’m making noticeable progress I think. After I graduate I will be doing a lot of critical analysis on reports, and writing reports as well especially on new technology and implementing them in projects I will be building, so I have gained a new understanding of analysis. I would hope to continue to pick up more techniques when it comes to critical analysis of text, and annotation techniques. I also would like to learn more about the writing process for science fiction, I always wondered how long does it take for someone in the field to create the many special places or these wonderful ideas. For example, the entire concept of the force in Star Wars, or designs and explanations behind each space ship and how it travels. They give a strong and intelligent basis for space travel and light speed that makes me wonder did they have to learn Rocket science just to write up designs and explanations on why this particular spaceship flies as fast as it does. I believe it takes a long time to write these worlds and stories into life so I hope we can maybe cover the process and the time it takes to get to the finished product. The two books and previous readings we have done has actually helped me on a group project I’m doing in another class basically, it deals with the pros and cons of giving Androids or Artificial intelligence human emotion. Using the work, we have read and discussed I was able to easily throw ideas around to help direct which stance we should have and give some insight to possibilities of what a future could hold with such technology and how humanity might react to it. Also, I would hope you give us a list of a few books to check out when the semester ends, something to read to help us understand more about science fiction writing. Coming into the class I could say I didn’t know much about science fiction writing, but I did love reading it and I had ideas for my own stories set in a distant time on distant planets. Now I have a new found understanding of the process and the hidden symbols and ideals you can throw into your work. As the semester carries on I hope I will absorb as much as possible and become a better writer for it.

Is Humanity Truly Superior?

In the Movie Blade Runner Rick Deckard is forced to continue his old job as “Replicant Hunter”. His assignment to eliminate four escaped Replicants from the colonies who have returned to Earth. A very difficult task Deckard is presented with because these new models “Nexus-6” prove to have high intelligence and unique fighting capabilities. Our first experience with a Nexus-6 is the opening minutes of the movie at the 4:55 minute mark. Leon a Nexus-6 is being interviewed by Holden another “Replicant Hunter”, giving him the Voight-Kampff test to see if he has what humans have the only thing that separates them from the “replicants” empathy. Leon who doesn’t have the intelligence level of his counterparts resorts to violence when he figures out his cover is already blown by killing Holden and escaping with his life. Rick Deckard is then called in to hunt these New types, because he is the best “Blade Runner” around no one is better then him, and he is the only one capable of hunting down and dealing with these new type of Replicants (11:37).  The second run in with these new Nexus-6 types will be at the Tyrell office when Rick gives the test to the Rachel and it took over 100 questions for Rick to conclude she is a replicant, and not the usual 20-30 (21:30). This shows how adaptive the new types are, they are almost undetectable if one would quit the test after the usual 20-30 questions they would continue to pass undetected. Its the tyrell Dream to make them as human as possible “more human than human” (21:40). He built the nexus-6 to be as perfect as possible, he installed a fail-safe of a lifespan of 4 years to combat the fact that they are better then humans, and are  as intelligence as their creators. It was concluded after 4 years they would start generating the only thing that separates them from Humanity, emotions and empathy. It was hinted that these 6 escaped Nexus-6 models were starting to generate empathy, at the 25:03 mark Rick finds pictures Leon took in his apartment of their life, leading up to their arrival on Earth. Roy Batty another Nexus-6 refereed to those pictures as “precious” to Leon. Using these pictures Rick was able to find another Nexus Model Zhora, when he confronts her she was able to easily see through his ruse and nearly kill Deckard but couldn’t only because she didn’t have enough time and ran to escape. After Dealing with Zhora, Deckard is confronted by Leon who; in is anger at the death of his friend by Deckards hands wishes to kill him. Leon’s strength took Deckard by surprise and he would of been easily killed if not for Rachel who ended up saving his life (1:02:01). It shows that these Replicants are better than humans physically, and intelligently when Roy is introduced into the story. Roy was able to easily beat his creator in a game of chess someone J.F. Sebastian said was one of the most brilliant men alive. Using chess and Sebastian he was able to meet his creator and Plead for a longer life, through this back and forth between Eldon Tyrell  and Roy it shows his high intelligence. Eldon Tyrell notices what Roy is going through and offers him solace in enjoying what he has done and appreciate what he accomplished to this point at the end of his lifespan. “The prodigal son…..quite a prize” (1:21:19). It was towards the end of the movie when Roy loses the last Nexus-6 Pris the one he had emotional attachment to, you see his pain when he loses her  (1:37:10). When their life cycle comes close to the end they gain the only thing that separates them from Humanity, empathy. In Roys last moments he performs an act suggesting perhaps that he has gained the empathy that is the thin dividing line between the Humans and the Replicants: he grabs his adversary and helps him up but before saving him he tells him something important. “Quite the experience to live in fear isn’t it, that’s what it is to be a slave” (1:45:18). Roy wanted to show Deckard what they were going through being hunted, then he saved him because he seen that Deckard didn’t want to die, and he also didn’t want to die. In that Moment he understood, and finally shared with Deckard what he seen in his short life, leaving him with a new understanding of the Replicants.

A Realization

Rick Deckard is starting to doubt himself and possibly the reasoning behind his job entirely. He realizes how crafty these new types really are. Rick has notices in his run in with the Android Luba Luft that he has sympathy for the Andy’s. The unexpected retiring of Luba in the elevator by Phil Resch has shown to him that he feels for female types, but in reality as Phil Resch pointed out to him “if its love toward a woman or an android imitation, its sex” (page 143). This was proven true because when rick was told that Phil is an android by Garland he believed it entirely, felt nothing when he knew it was only a matter of time before he will retire him during their retreat. “you’re everything we jointly abominate. The essence of what we’re committed to destroy” (page 127).  His reaction towards Phil a suspected android is that of hate, and he simply didn’t like him because of it. But when he thinks or mentions Luba Luft its of admiration “I’ve had enough. She was a wonderful singer. The planet could have used her. This is insane” (page 136). “But Luba Luft had seemed genuinely alive: it had not worn the aspect of a simulation” (page 141). Rick realized you can have empathy towards something artificial like the Androids, and that would include them in their range for animals. If they did that then they can no longer retire Androids they would have to be protected under the law. “If we included androids in our rage of emphatic identification, as we do animals. We couldn’t protect ourselves (page 141)”. If the androids are protected under these laws there would be nothing stopping them from leaving their masters on mars.

In the grand scheme of things Rick understands that he and his profession are needed to stop these new types, “perhaps the better she functions, the better a singer she is, the more i am needed. If androids had remained substandard, like the ancient q-40’s made by Derain associates– there would be no problem and no need for my skill” (page 99). Rick’s happy that these news types are keeping him in business as much as he is amazed at their progression.  The possibilities he seen in Luba Luft opened rick’s eyes to the real threat that he and humanity are facing on earth. “These nexus-6 types…..they’d roll all over us and mash us flat. You and I, all the bounty hunters–we stand between the Nexus-6 and mankind, a barrier which keeps the two distinct” (page 141). Rick Deckard thought of himself as a good bounty hunter, but these new Nexus-6 models prove difficultly he wasn’t prepared for. “You’re a good bounty hunter, Rick realized. Your attitude proves it. But am I? Suddenly, for the first time in his life, he had begun to wonder”  (page 144).
