Owner’s Manual Evaluation

I decided to look into Nintendo’s Wiiu’s instruction manual. I have always been a fan of gaming so I thought looking into a console would be ideal for it. Nintendo is one of the world’s biggest gaming franchise who delivered us the classic Mario games and many more. They released their latest console, the Nintendo Wiiu which was a big hit and provided different varieties of fun games.

The manual start’s off with the types of manuals they have. Either a printed version, or an electronic one which is the one I used. After that it talks about health and safety hazards that we should know such as keeping it away from infants way because they can chew on the cords and cables. The next part in the manual is all about the set up. It shows us how to plug in the cables, of where they each should do, piece by piece. After that it explains us how to charge the controllers for the WiiU and the WiiU itself.

Other instructions are mainly how to turn on and off the system and how to use the controller. The manual is really designed well because it shows the steps by picture and words. Some manuals only show instructions by words and they end up using hard to understand words but in this instructions manual, they explain what each part is and where they should go via photo. It makes it that much easier to understand. The rest of the manual is pretty much explains how to add users to the system and how to connect to the internet and also how to transfer data, or replace the battery.

Overall the clarity of the manual was spot on. It’s easy to understand and read. It isn’t confusing and they write in a way that’s understandable for anyone. The accessibility and usability are perfect. It’s an easy to use console and they show that. Easy to set up and to access anything on it. This instruction manual was done perfectly in my opinion.

Instruction manual for Cisco Router Guide

For this particular assignment I will designate and get into details with the Cisco Router Guide. The Cisco Router Manual Guide talks about myriads of things such as Integrated Services Routers, Aggregation Routers, Compatibility of Routers and how Cisco routers differ from one another. The manual is written in a PDF form and it is easy to locate by any users.

The manual firstly describes an overview of different type of Cisco Series Routers and it can be found in pages 5-11 in the Series Overview. The Router Series Overview primarily describes the different types of Cisco Routers that are compatible with different types of locations in small offices and in big offices.  The different Cisco Routers like the Cisco 1800 Series (Fixed-configuration) and Cisco 1900 Series Integrated Services Routers  [page 5] are useful for small offices and businesses. Meanwhile, Cisco 3800 Series and Cisco 3900 Series Integrated Services Routers are used to medium-sized to large businesses and Enterprise Branch Offices. These Cisco routers have advantages and disadvantages in them such as the type of security they provide and their modularity (Manageability and reliability of Cisco IOS Software).

The most important aspect of the Cisco manual in my opinion is the Product Transition Matrix which can be found in page 13-50. This is important in my opinion because it gives the users useful information of the Routers such as the Ethernet speed, encryption, RAM, and security connectivity.  Many users are going to look for a better quality router that has a fast connectivity speed and the one that is always secure (Security Features page: 46). Cisco Routers do provide these things. Cisco Routers like Cisco 890 provides great security connectivity and firewalls are always updated which can be found in page 38. The Instruction manual shows the different solution for a Cisco Router if the wireless system is down. The manual also gives an image of the Cisco Routers on how they should be installed in a small and big location.

Moreover, the manual instruction shows which Cisco Routers are commonly used in today’s society. Cisco ASR 1000 Series are the most common router that big companies uses because it offers a lot of services that is helpful with LAN connectivity in the work place. The Cisco ASR 1000 Series Router works efficiently in way that IOS Zone-based Firewall are integrated with crypto solutions. Big companies who needs a service with Wi-Fi connections benefit from this type of router because its fast and offers security services with the encryption and firewall.

Overall, reading the manual was very interesting because as a Computer Systems Technology major we actually need to know in depth with different types of routers and what their capabilities are. I’ve learned that Cisco is definitely one of the routers that are advanced and don’t have that many issues with their connectivity efficiency. I would definitely recommend to anyone who is getting a router to get Cisco because they offer great services. The Cisco Router Guide manual shows it all on what a user needs to know if he/she is planning to have a router and how to install it properly having fewer issues with it.

Major/Education Reflection

Since starting at New York City College of Technology i have change my major once before staying in my current major Computer System Technology. At first when i entire college i was unsure in what subject to major in, after looking into several major i decide to major in my current field. Before I apply to City Tech i look at several different city university of new york school before making my choice to go to city tech. In the computer system technology department the class are explain to student and are low to pick which part of computer system technology they will like to focus on.

The computer system department lack computer in the lab, students have to wait a long time to user the computer. The department does not allow student to use their network outside of school. If student were allow to use the network outside of school, they did not have to wait for to use the school computer. In addition some of the programing language the school use are not available to student to use outside of school. The department also lack lounge and a room for student use to study or work on group project together. The department website is easy to used for new student and all the courses and student can see the course they will need to take for they associate and bachelor’s degree.

For this research paper I look at several different college and the courses they offer in computer science field. I read review and the look at the school website to read the course catalog. In Brooklyn college it is very hard to understand how the course college is laid out. It just take me the department website and all the course for the department are listed. It is very hard to understand the school website. At itt technology institutes the courses was listed but there was not description of what the courses was about, just the course number. In fordham university it was the same the course was listed but not description of the course. In several college i looked at the course was listed but there were no description of the course.

In queens college the course they offer were similar to the ones they offer at city tech. The college lays out the catalog for the student and the description of the course they offer. The college even have a section where they listed the special topics courses they offer to students. At The city college of new york the college offer student a hybrid major where the student can major in computer science and electrical engineering department. It is very interesting to see that because the city tech offer both computer science and electrical engineering as different major and cannot be combine to make one major. Unless i went to these college and take course related to my major, i will not understand if the course were alike or different. In the computer system department some class require student to complete certification in order to pass the course.

Jason’s Post on Online Identity in a Networked World

The job market has changed drastically over the years, and these articles serve as good examples to show us how.  Applying for jobs is not as easy as it once was.  Today is all about social media; being interconnected to your family, friends, your friends’ friends, and so on, through the internet.  This is now something we have to take into account when searching for jobs, and it can work against us.

No longer do you just need an appealing, professional resume and cover letter.  It can be extremely beneficial to represent or “brand” yourself online in a professional manner (Korn, Melissa. “College Advises Students: Ditch the Selfies.” At Work RSS. N.p., 27 Mar. 2014. Web. 23 Sept. 2014.). There are even websites and services to help one achieve this, though they haven’t had overwhelming success yet. (Weber, Lauren. “Colleges Pay to Protect Students from Toxic Google Results.” At Work RSS. N.p., 17 Dec. 2012. Web. 23 Sept. 2014.).

The big problem for most people will be employers discovering embarassing photos or information online.  People like to use social media (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram) to humiliate themselves in front of the world, by posting photos and/or videos of themselves partying drunk, passed out, etc.  If an employer discovers this, there’s a good chance you won’t even be a candidate for that job anymore.  One article I read talks about ways to hide yourself online, such as using a common Facebook name (Ryan, Rachel. “Yes, Employers Will Check Your Facebook Before Offering You a Job.” The Huffington Post. TheHuffingtonPost.com, 04 Mar. 2013. Web. 23 Sept. 2014.).  That article also suggests that you just use common sense when posting on social media websites, and then it shouldn’t interfere with your job application.

I’m not really represented online at all.  I don’t have a Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn, or anything like that. Sure I’m on OpenLab, but there’s nothing to see… just my classwork.  Plus, chances are employers won’t even find it (no offense).  When googling my name, I don’t find anything related to me.  I only find other people named Jason Choy.  This is what I expected since I choose to not participate in social media.  Still, this isn’t exactly a good thing.  A professional LinkedIn profile would actually give me an online identity, which may be beneficial as some of those articles discuss.  Perhaps one of these days I’ll consider making one.

I don’t think it’s unethical for job employers to do background checks on candidates using the internet and social media.  It’s good that they do this, because it can reveal important information.  If someone has a habit of partying and being wasted on Monday mornings, and this is evidenced on their Facebook page, an employer should bring this up in the job interview.  However, it would be wrong if they based their decision almost entirely on what they find or don’t find, but as long as it’s not the most outstanding decision in their job hiring or promoting process, I don’t have a problem with it.  I don’t know if I agree with Facebook friends affecting one’s chances to get a credit card though… just because you might be friends with someone irresponsible, that doesn’t make you irresponsible as well.

Job Ads

For this assignment, I limited my search to the NYC area and obviously only looked for jobs in my desired area of work, that is, Technology. When I began my Computer Systems Technology here at City Tech, I knew that I was entering an extremely broad field which would lay a proper foundation for whichever area of Technology I later decide to narrow down and focus on. I’m now in my third year so I’ve now reached that stage. My three modules of study are Database, Networking and Security therefore I looked for jobs involving these.

The first thing I noticed most of these job ads had in common was that they all wanted some form of experience. As an imminent graduate fresh out of school this would be very frustrating. How are we supposed to gain experience when we wont be hired unless we have the necessary experience in the first place? I believe the answer here lies in doing internships while at school. By doing this you not only beef up your resume, but you expand your network while also seeing how it’s like working in a real working environment. This then allows for a smooth transition from school to work when the time does arrive. Another thing that was prevalent in most of these ads was that the minimum level of education required was a Bachelors degree. My ideal situation would have been to finish school by 20 and start making money, get my own apartment and upgrade on life. Thankfully, I know better and I’m close to completing my Bachelors. The thing is almost everyone are now doing this so the competition is extremely high. In order to stand out one has to continue on to getting their masters, a decision I’m still mulling over. Some jobs did have masters as a requirement by the way. Another thing that caught my attention was that for most networking jobs they require Cisco certification, CCNA expertise or the equivalent to these. City Tech does not provide these however so I would have to go the extra mile to attain such jobs. Security and Database seem to be easier to get into however as students are exposed to most of the requirements during the 4 years at school.

As far as the personal qualities they look for in potential employees, they all look for the same cliché things more or less: highly motivated, strong attitude, team player etc. As I pointed out earlier, most people competing for the same position usually have similar qualifications so I suppose if both persons are even in terms of such qualifications, the person with the more positive attitude will get the job opposed to someone who is anti social or gives a lazy vibe. Excellent public speaking, written, verbal, interpretive and interpersonal skills was also emphasized in certain jobs and I suppose this is where this class comes in handy.

One thing I was really excited about while searching through all these ads was the pay rate. For a database admin in particular the pay varies from $50-$60 an hour. Even entry level positions are relatively well paid. As in Information Security Consultant which only requires a bachelors degree, the pay is 90k-125k a year. Some ads didn’t post what the pay would be for that specific job but with a little research of my own I learned that the pay is also good.

In conclusion, by doing this assignment I’ve learned that employers are very demanding when it comes to what they want from an employee but this no problem as most Computer System Technology jobs are well compensated. I still feel very prepared for work after graduating as the knowledge I’ve gained in school and the experience I’ve gained through various internships will go a long way in helping me achieve my career goals. I know for a fact that most of the learning is on the job itself anyhow. For instance I did a web development course in 2013 Spring semester and the following summer I did an in internship developing a website for a local start up and I learned way more during this 8 week internship than I did in the class-room setting. This leads me to my final point; very few jobs mentioned on the job training but I guess this will come naturally. There are an abundance of jobs available city wide as compared to other fields where people are finding it hard to find work so I look forward to starting soon. Below is just a handful of the links viewed while writing this.
