My world.

The two places in New York City which always seem to bring joy to me when I am down and out, are 14street and a pier. Not many people know about this pier.  I’m not going to say where because it holds a special place to me and I don’t want others going. I enjoy going to 14street because I know the area so well and there is always something happening or something to do. Usually I will go by myself and walk around and shop or get something to get from chipotle, maybe 16 handles. I enjoy doing this because it gives me time to clear my head and get away from my stress. I also like to go to the stores and see what’s in. I’m almost always in forever21, when I go to 14street.

For me the pier that I go to holds a special meaning because someone who I hold dear to my heart first brought me there. There are a lot of memories and whenever I go I feel a sense of joy, although things have changed I still have that place where I can go and feel okay. The view of the water makes me feel so at peace and I can just lay on the grass for hours. I have never brought anyone else there and I don’t think I will any time soon because it’s a place where I can go when the world get’s too hectic for me. It’s like I’m am in my own little world where for a moment everything else does not matter.

Bitter Sweet

Although I have not been at city tech for that long, thus far my experience has been bitter sweet. Coming straight from high school into college has been a bit over whelming for me. I have made plenty of friends in a short amount of time, but I miss my best friends dearly. One of them is in the Marines, while the other is away at school. I have other friends who are in New York City, but none of them know me as well as those two. Which can sometimes make me feel isolated.

People always told me to go to college and I did. Not exactly because I wanted to but because I knew that in order to be someone who was respected and known; I needed a degree. What I soon realized was how unprepared i was academically. High school is far more easier than college. The work and skills that I received in high school did not really prepare me for what college was going to be like.

While in high school all that I did was write papers and take a test every once in a while.  Due to this I have the most difficulty with studying because I don’t really know how to and organizing my ideas when it comes to writing my papers. Luckily, for me I have teachers who are willing to sit with me and talk to me about how to find way to work through these struggles. I really appreciate that because when I was in high school I was always told that once you get to college you’re on you’re own. Which in many ways I agree with and disagree with, it’s a matter of going and finding the help or assistance that you need because it is available.

It’s like in the blink of an eye you’re an adult. Between working and going to school I’m so busy. I really have to make sure that I prioritize when it comes to my time. I often find myself spending all of my time in the library when I am not in class. As I go along I am in charge of my own education and making sure that my responsibilities get taken care of. I just wish that sometimes I had someone in school that I knew of and can go to who can help me with my organization.

Joy to the world.

Residents of Somerville are coming together with an organization geared towards happiness. Their goal is to create and app that will help increase a persons happiness. The way that it works is people are given a survey which asks what makes them happy. They are then matched with activities to do that will help increase their happiness. This app will be of use to the residents of Somerville because it can help bring more joy to people. Aside from bringing more joy to people, residents hope that other people will hear about their results and use the app to help increase happiness in their cities.

Others are keeping their eyes open for things that make people happy in New York City. Researchers at the New England Complex are in the words of coming up with a mathematical way to map peoples happiness using their tweets on twitter. In the hopes of soon being able to create a map that will show people’s happiness through all of the five boroughs. They are looking for places which seem to make people happy. So far they have found that people seem to be happier in places such a central park, rather than in the subway. People seem to be happy in open spaces, opposed to dreadful dark crowded places.

It has been shown that people who live in poorer neighborhoods tend to be more angry than those who live in wealthy places based off of their tweets. So then the question that comes into play is how can you make everyone happy? A lot of people are doing research and giving surveys in the hopes they will find what makes people happy and creating more of it. In fact there was a survey taken that shows the day that people are the happiest is on Christmas. I think we all know why that is. We as humans like things that make us happy like clean parks and holidays spent with our family. Researchers hope to find other things that make people happy and create more of it.

“Be Gretchen”

I found it interesting how in her book “The Happiness Project” Gretchen Rubin spoke about her struggle throughout her “project”. It made it seem like she was easy to relate to, she took her readers through her journey. She came up with her own twelve rules that she had to obey and her readers were able to see her progression. Before she started her project she was not miserable she was just under a lot of stress with her husband having hepatitis and her sister having diabetes.  Gretchen took a lot of little things for granted which we all do when we are put under a lot of stress. The only difference is that she chose to make a change. There was a point towards the end of her book where her husband tells their daughter her mother is about to buy something that is going to make her very happy and it only cost five dollars, turns out I was a sponge. It is he little things like that which people should learn to appreciate more. Then she goes on to say that her husband was supposed to call her and her never did, but he sent her an email saying “don’t be mad, see below”, when she first bean the happiness project she was afraid that if she stopped nagging her husband he would stop putting an effort into their relationship but the opposite happened actually. Gretchen put a lot of thought into writing her book, especially with her side notes, it was simple and easy to follow.

Enternal Happiness for only the price of $99.00

happiness

Here we have an eye glass advertisement that instead of having numbers and letters in the chart spells out “The Secret To Finding Eternal Happiness”. This advertisement is clever because it leads people to believe that if they by glasses from here than they will be happy for the rest of their lives. This advertisement causes people to want to buy glasses because it says sale and when we see the word sale we tend to want to buy things even if we don’t need them. Also the words Secret and Eternal are underlined to put empathies on the fact that these glasses can provide happiness for a person for the rest of their life. In my ways this advertisement is a joke because how can a pair of glasses make a person life fulfilling with joy, etc for ever. It’s unrealistic to even be advertising these glasses like this.

“The Secret”

I bet you did not know that there is a secret. A secret to the way that you think, it’s called “The Secret” which is a law of attraction. It is the most powerful thing ever that many famous historians in the past have used. Such as William Shakespeare, Robert Browning, and Beethoven. It is used in many religions such as Hinduism, Buddhism, etc.. Wealthy people use “The Secret” to gain more wealth because it is all that they know. It is the only way of thinking that there is to them.

The more that you think about something that makes you unhappy or sad, the more that those thoughts whether it be pleasant or unpleasant will multiply. It is interesting because in the reading we were described as human towers, meaning we get whatever we give off. So the more positive thoughts that we think the more good will happen in our lives. Often we tend to spend much of our time thinking about the live that we do not want instead of the life that we do want and that negativity controls the rest of our thoughts bringing negativity to us.

The law of attraction does not understand don’t and no it only understands thoughts, so you get whatever it is that you give off. By controlling the way that we think our lives become better, if we say that we do not want something to happen we are basically asking for it to happen. We can not harm others with our thoughts only ourselves so the key is to stay positive and optimistic. You have to be super optimistic when it comes to income because if you are sad about what little money you do have instead of how much money you want you will never progress. Always give back what you can, because when you give you will be rewarded. You are control of your thoughts and feelings.

Corrections on my response to both speechs.

In his speech Bill De Blasio’s brought up those who are less fortunate, the lower or working class and spoke about how things such as hospitals which are a necessity especially in poorer neighborhoods; are being taken away so that other things such as condos can be built. He spoke about how he wants to put an end to racial profiling. In his speech he thanked a lot of people that helped him during his candidate such as Organizations, Ambassadors, his Campaign team, family and friends. He spoke about how everyone should have an equal opportunity to receive an education.  Overall he showed where he stands and the changes that he wants to make.

Bill De Blasio’s speech was very humble, heartfelt and humorous. In the beginning of his speech his daughter spoke and he had a brief moment where he thanked his kids and wife and it was very sweet. He chose to do his speech in Brooklyn instead of Manhattan which shows that he has not forgotten about where he has come from.  People like a family man it is very appealing it shows that he has morals and is trust worthy and Bill De Blasio certainly does seem like someone who is true to his word.At 17:36 minutes in his speech he spoke about change and it reminded me of Obama, which makes him seem like he more appealing candidate because it shows that he is for the people. He spoke about how he wants to put an end to racial profiling and that can really appealing to the people because it shows that someone is listening to what they have to say.Bill De Blasio’s speech was strong because he had evidence to back up what he was saying from 11:51 minutes to 12:22 minutes he discussed how the lower class or working class are being forgotten, because the upper class are coming into poorer neighborhoods and they are buying out what little is there. His speech was very well put together, humble, it showed unity and loyalty.

In his speech Joe Lhola spoke about his family and friends/colleagues and his childhood. He spoke about the city being cohere. He brought up the other party from time to time and said that he does no only want to appeal to one group; he wants us to all be in unity. He spoke about taxes and the importance of education to him.  He even thanked the NYPD for all of their hard work and took a stand. He also described how he wants to bring down crime in New York.

From 4:00 minutes to 4:15 he described New York City as a city of hope, a place where dreams come true. In a way you were able to understand Lhotas vision of happiness for the city which is togetherness.  It’s interesting because when he talked about the other party he made it seem as though they wanted to live in a Utopia land, if you go back to 4:40 to 4:45 you will see him speak about a tale of two cities and how he wants us  come together. From his speech I gather that he wants to appeal more to the privileged because he did not really touch base on the lower or poor, he mainly spoke about the middle class. From 4:25 to 5:12 he spoke about how his family struggled and his parents gave up a lot for him to be able to get a good education. He talked about how he plans on making charter schools better. Other than that he did not really touch base on the economic struggles that many lower class are dealing with. When Joe thanked the NYPD at 8:28 he said “we need to keep our streets safe” and in other words showed his ideology that stop and frisk is good because it helps keep the city safe.  Towards the end of his speech from 12:40 to 13:05 he specifically said “Cancer and corruption of tsunami sleeves” I found that interesting because to me from his speech he is more on the side of the middle class and upper rather than the poor.

Bill De Blasio’s speech appealed to people more, it was personal and humble. He showed that he genially cares for his voters and has their best interest at heart. He spoke about how he is for the people, mainly the lower class but he still made it known that he cares about the city as a whole. Joe Lhola’s speech appealed more to the middle class. He spoke about unity but to me I don’t see how he wants unity among the city when he is for things like stop and frisk. Many people who are victims of stop and frisk are not going to want to vote for him because they disagree with his belief. You can see the differences in the two speaks and the two men themselves.  Hopefully whoever becomes mayor is prereformative.

NYC Mayoral Candidate Speeches

Summary:

In his speech Bill De Blasio’s brought up those who are less fortunate, the lower or working class and spoke about how things such as hospitals which are a necessity especially in poorer neighborhoods; are being taken away so that other things such as condos can be built. He spoke about how he wants to put an end to racial profiling. In his speech he thanked a lot of people that helped him during his candidate such as Organizations, Ambassadors, his Campaign team, family and friends. He spoke about how everyone should have an equal opportunity to receive an education.  Overall he showed where he stands and the changes that he wants to make.

Analysis:

Bill De Blasio’s speech was very humble, heart felt and humorous. In the beginning of his speech his daughter spoke and he had a brief moment where he thanked his kids and wife and it was very sweet. He chose to do his speech in Brooklyn instead of Manhattan which shows that he has not forgotten about where he has come from.  People like a family man it is very appealing it shows that he has morals and is trust worthy and Bill De Blasio certainly does seem like someone who is true to his word.

At 17:36 minutes in his speech he spoke about change and it reminded me of Obama, which makes him seem like he more appealing candidate because it shows that he is for the people. He spoke about how he wants to put an end to racial profiling and that can really appealing to the people because it shows that someone is listening to what they have to say.

Bill De Blasio’s speech was strong because he had evidence to back up what he was saying from 11:51 minutes to 12:22 minutes he discussed how the lower class or working class are being forgotten, because the upper class are coming into poorer neighborhoods and they are buying out what little is there. His speech was very well put together, humble, it showed unity and loyalty.

Summary:

In his speech Joe Lhola spoke about his family and friends/colleagues. He thanked them all. I notice that he did not really discuss his plans on what he would want to change if he were to become mayor.

Analysis:

In the beginning his speech was very sloppy and you couldn’t really hear what he was saying at times because of the music that was playing. He speech was very short and he did not really talk about his plans for change. It seemed like he thought he was going to win right off the back.

His speech could have been better. He could have talked about things that he would like to change and how he would go about doing so. It could have been more personal in the sense that he was establishing a connection with the voters.

Comparison:

Bill De Blasio’s speech appealed to people more, it was personal and humble. He showed that he genially cares for his voters and has their best interest at heart. Joe Lhola’s speech although he did mention his family and thanked a lot of people was very brief and he did not touch base on any issues that are occurring. Voters like to know that the person they are voting for honestly does care and his listening to what tey have to say and Joe Llhoa’s speech does not show that they way that Bill De Blasio’s does.
