The happiest place for me in NY?

To be honest, I can’t really choose what’s the happiest place for me in New York, but I can tell you the various places in New York that makes me happy. I’ve been living here all my life, and I have to say there’re too many places for me to choose from. New York is much too big of a place, but the place where I hangout the most is Manhattan’s Chinatown. I’ve grown up there and lived there my entire life, so I know the in’s and out’s of the place. What makes this place so unique is the various handball courts, restaurants, KTV’s, and pool halls. Even though the place is called “Chinatown”, the stores, parks and restaurants are filled with different cultures. It’s almost impossible to get bored in Chinatown as there’re so many places to eat and enjoy yourselves.  Another place that makes me happy in New York is 34th Street. It has one of the best movie theaters in the city, and there’re a lot of places to shop at. The place is filled with lights and people, giving the environment a nice vibe. 34th street is also extremely convenient, as there’re many places to shop, eat, and play. Overall, the city is filled with cheerfulness and buildings, giving off a positive and welcoming aura to people. From the monstrous sky scrapers, to the bright city lights, New York is definitely a place that produces happiness and entertainment

My experience in city tech

When I got the acceptance letter to City Tech, I was surprised and excited at the same time. I was surprised due to my extremely low grades, and SAT scores. I was also excited because a lot of my friends are currently enrolled in City Tech. When people told me that I actually had to do study and submit my work on time, I didn’t believe them. Now that I actually attend college and get to experience the college courses, I realized that not believing them was a huge mistake. In order for me to pass college, I’ll have to change my mentality on school. When I first stepped into my human services class, I was extremely nervous. We all sat in a circle facing the professor. The first thing I noticed was that the professor spoke and acted in a professional manner. After realizing that the professor was serious about our work and study, it was time for me to step my game up. Even though college may be challenging and stressful, it was time for me to acknowledge that I have to push myself to further my goals in the future.

The Happiness Project

The Happiness Project, by Grethcen Ruben, is about about how she tries to find true happiness throughout her neutral, yet complex life.  She wasn’t completely satisfied with her life, yet she has a husband which she admires, and two delightful young daughters. To other’s, acquiring these things are already a blessing, but in the author’s eyes, she has yet to find true happiness.  The author is constantly in a state of complexity, as she can never find anything satisfying. ” I wanted to change myself but accept myself. I wanted to take my self less seriously, and also more seriously”. (4) The author is regularly contradicting herself, to the point where it drives her to pursue the happiness project even more.

Like “The Secret”, by Rhonda Byrne’s, she associates herself with the worlds greatest philosophers, such as Plato, Boethius, etc. The author does research on these great theorist, on how they once obtained great achievement and prosperity in their lives. Despite all the hard work she performed, she questions herself, ” First, did I believe it was possible to make myself happier? After all, the “set-point” theory holds that a person’s basic level of happiness doesn’t fluctuate much, except briefly.” (5) She then concludes that it was actually possible; that people have an inborn disposition. You just have to raise your happiness standards higher.

It’s quite interesting that the author is always in a state of confusion, but yet she still strives to be a perfect character. The author is aiming for true happiness, despite her contradicting thoughts interfering with her actions.

Promoting Happiness With a Happy Meal

mcdonald

(March 6th, 2012, Dale Buss)

This McDonald advertisement promotes happiness by showing that one can eat healthy, while enjoying their food at the same time. In this image, the mother and daughter is smiling because the daughter is having a well balanced meal. This advertisement expresses that one can have a good time by bonding with their child, and buying them a happy meal. The fact that the meal itself is called a “Happy Meal” is indicating that this meal was intended to make people content. This advertisement is extremely eye catching, especially to parents who are serious about their child’s health. It is also beneficial for the parent and child, due to the fact that the Happy Meal is healthy and cheap. Food in general can promote happiness in general by fulfilling one’s hunger, but if it’s both healthy and great tasting, it would satisfy people even more. When one can be happy by providing their child with a cheap, and healthy snack, why not go for it?

The Secret

Have you ever wondered or thought about something, and it just seems to magically walk into your life? If this has occurred to you, you have just witnessed the secret. According to “The Secret” by Rhonda Byrne, The secret is a law emitted by ones thoughts, which attracts whatever walks into your life. When you portray an image or a thought in your mind, you’re the mastermind of your life, and only you.

The law of attraction has been taken place and recorded since 3000 BC. Famous poets, musicians, and artists such as William Shakespeare, Ludwig Van Beethoven, and Leonardo Da Vinci have all expressed the laws of attractions through their creations, and art. The law of attraction have also been used in religions, such as Hinduism, Christianity, Islam, etc.

When one wants something so bad, their line of thought is probably focused purely on that one thing, and that is when law of attractions takes place. A good example is wealth, and when one is wealthy, their thoughts are solely on wealth and another thing, losing it. When one is solely thinking about their wealth, they also portray thoughts of losing their fortune, and so, they lose their wealth. One must know a very important thing, and that is  ” The law responds to your thoughts, no matter what”.

According the to the story, we’re more likely to be depressed when we start to think about moments when we’re upset, or unhappy. Our thoughts tend to multiply on that one major thought, and it’ll seem like the predicament  has gotten even more severe. As this story story seems to project, it is important to think positive thoughts, as we’re what we portray in our minds. If we’re thinking positive thoughts, we will continue to anticipate on happy thoughts and vice versa. Our thoughts are our own, and it’s essential to keep in mind that what we think are how we define our selves.

Revision for Summary and Analysis of Victory Speeches.

In Bill De Blasio’s victory speech, he starts off by thanking his supporters and family, for everything they’ve done to help him make it this far. Bill believes that all with authority should keep the city protected, and he expresses his gratitude towards anyone who helped those in need of support during 9/11. Bill states that ” New York has become a tail of two cities”, meaning there are two different types of people in New York. One, being the wealthy class, and two, people living near poverty. While the wealthy class live in luxurious life styles, the poor strives on to help their kids get a better education. Bill resorts to helping those in need, and believing everyone should deserve a chance to reach their potentials.

In Joe Lhota’s victory speech, he states that taxes and other issues dominated campaigns, but what he is trying to fight for is resolving issues for New Yorkers, and how they can be solved. Joe states that his family members were all New York civilians, working and providing aid to the city. His mother also worked just so Joe and his brother can attend school. Joe states “New York has been my blood from the very beginning” (4:57), showing how he relates to the people, and how determined he is to provide well being for the residents of New York. Joe also mentions the Tale of Two Cities, and how it wants to tear down the over all progress the city has achieved (5:37). By saying how the tale of two cities is nothing more than class warfare, it is not only trying to divide the city, but it almost brought down the city to bankruptcy (5:42). Joe states he will not let that pass, and will fight to unify the city. Joe thinks that school is a huge priority for city, and he wants to expand charter schools so parents have options to better their childs education. Joe closes the speech by saying he is not a slick politician, and he will always tell the truth.

Between these 2 victory speeches, I feel that both mayors try hard to do whats best for their people. During Bill’s victorial speech, he was being specific about what needed to be changed, and what would be better for the city. By bringing up 9/11, he reminded us of what happened during in times of difficulty, and sent a message to the city that we’ll never be left unprotected, even when when under poor circumstances. Joe’s victory speech showed that he had a lot of knowledge of the city, and how New York has been his blood since the very beginning. He drew out the important issues in the city, and prioritized them by calling it out. Like Bill, he also seems to know about the Tale of Two Cities, and is well aware of how it is ripping apart the city. I feel that both mayors have similar problems they want to find an answer for, and they’re doing a pretty good job in their campaign.

Summary and Analysis for NYC Mayoral Victory Speeches

Summary

What Joe believes brought him to victory were “issues, vision, principal, and experience” .(3:30) By unifying the republican party, it provides the strength needed to victorious in November.

Analysis : Compare and Contrast

Between these 2 victory speeches, I feel that Bill’s speech was more detailed, and provided more information on what he was trying to aim for. He was being specific about what needed to be changed, and what would be better for the city. By bringing up 9/11, he reminded us of what happened during in times of difficulty, and sent a message to the city that we’ll never be left unprotected, even when when under poor circumstances. Joe’s victory speech was too general and overall, not pointing out details that needed to be said. He stated that he only cared for issues that mattered to New York, which is not specific at all, while he could’ve prioritized problems that dominated other issues. Even though Republicans and Democrats think and use methods differently, their main goal is a brighter and better future for New York. By pointing out the city’s weak points, they aim to strengthen and change their views on what can be done to make New York a “better” place.

Summary of “How Happy Are You? A Census Wants to Know”

Residents of Somerville, Massachusetts have been questioned, “On a scale of 1 – 10, how happy do you feel right now?”. Cencus forms have been passed out to residents residing in Somerville, MA, with over 7500  people mailing back their response. With some answers not being limited about their hometown, one man says he would like to to be 3 inches taller and to speak Quecha fluently.  This shows that people can have different types of happiness, not limited to just municipal concerns.

With help from Somerville’s neighbor Dr. Gilbert, he conducted a detailed telephone survey researching people’s happiness, using random samples of Somerville’s 76,000 residents. Stating that  social policies are always spreading things that promote happiness, how could it hurt to directly measure the very thing that you want to know about happiness? With things such as longer breaks, or more vacation days, it’s a no brainer that residents will give a definite yes to. Residents such as Vanessa states that while living in Somerville, she notices alot of improvement, such as installing bike lanes. Simple efforts like these shows that these policies can make people happier.

Somerville Officials hope to create a well-being index, and to compare with other towns over time, to track peoples rate of happiness. They also want to expand thoughts on what can be added on to improve the rate of happiness from baseline datas. With just a little effort, why not let people express their opinions and current rate of happiness to track what can be expanded in the future?

Revision 9/11/13

In the article “How Happy Are you a Cencus Wants to Know” by John Tierny, residents have been asked to rate their happiness. Over 7500 people mailed back their response with ratings, and some with their own personal goals they want to achieve. By using cencus forms to determine the overall happiness of the town, it’s easier to expand ideas to improve the city. For example, building parks, bike paths, or when mass transit services are improved, can have a impact on people’s happiness. Policies can have a change on people’s happiness, and with these cencus forms, it makes the residents flattered to have such a caring community.

Reflection

When I first wrote the summary, it had some unnecessary details that didn’t have to be there. I learned that a summary is based off the article, and it should include the main ideas of the article rather than small details that doesn’t impact the article as much. By editing my summary, it is now straight forward, without unnecessary add ons.
