11/25/24: Rough Draft of Unit 3 Artist Statement

Reflect upon the major unit activities we’ve worked on this semester, the Education Narrative, the RAB (Reflective Annotated Bibliography) and now the final genre research project. As you write, think about and answer the following questions:

-How do you think the major unit projects fit together? How are they related? Be specific and use examples from each (not direct quotations from your work, but the themes and ideas). Try to draw connections between your narrative, bibliography and now your research project.

-Explain the rationale behind what (and how!) you plan on writing about for your research project. If you are choosing to write a conventional research essay—which most (all?) of you seem to be—for your final project, explain specifically why. Think about it! Of all the options you have (TedTalk, podcast, video essay, etc.), justify your decision to write a research paper. Why is it the most effective way to reach the audience you intend to address?

-What do you think you might have done differently in your projects so far, and what might you do differently in the future? This kind of reflection will be included in your “artist statement” in the final project, so really thinking and writing about this today will mean you can include it in your draft of the project. Also included will be:

  1. Context: Give us the background for this project. Remind us how you became interested in the topic.
  2. Rhetorical Situation and Related Choices: Tell us the “why” of your project. What was your purpose for making this project? What audience did you want to direct this information to? Why that audience specifically? Where did you see your piece being shown or distributed to your audience? What appeals did you decide to use (which, of course, may have changed later): facts (logos), emotion (pathos), the credibility of you or someone you talk about (ethos)?
  3. Genre Considerations: Why did you chose the genre you did? What made you think that genre would be the best one for your audience? For example, if you did a brochure, what made a brochure the best way to get the information to your chosen audience — that is, you knew you had a place to distribute it so that seemed logical?

Doing the project: Walk us chronologically through the process you went through to get it done: this, then this, then this… What did you have to change and when? Did you throw out your original idea altogether, and if so, why? Who/where did you turn to for help? When did you panic (if you did) and what did you do about it?

I think they fit together by first getting you started on the topic you choose and making it easier in unit 3 to show in a way the research you made of your topic, I’ll say unit 2 is the learning process and writing down what you learn in detail, and unit 3 would be like the final exposition with different ways of showing everything that was researched. For example I researched about mars exploration so I would want to show fun but informative things of my research like robots on mars for example I would want to exposed that fun part to my audience to make it more attractive and educational as possible. This topic is very important to me because human curiosity has no limit, I want to learn more on what’s out there in outer space and how it can benefit us humans. That’s why im focusing on kids and teens to read and see my online presentation with engaging photos. To be honest I don’t think is the best to option to engage the audience I’m trying to go for I just chose it because it was the easiest in my opinion to do. But I think it can still get the job done of attracting my audience. I’m because interested in this topic because since I was a kid I been very passionate about astronomy, and I strongly believe that people should be interested in this because is the next step to upgrade our technology and to know more about what’s out there, expand humanity outside of just earth. To express this in used logos to show all the positive things that would come to humans if we do explore more and more of outer space. In my opinion I think that someone would be interested in this when they see how logical it is to continue expanding humanity outside of earth. It seems more logical for me to target kids and teens because they would be more interested because is what’s going to define they’re future the future they would be living on and with space exploration in they’re lives with all the changes that exploring space brings to us. Also adults and older people wouldn’t really be interested in space exploration because they may find it boring or they won’t be alive anyways to enjoy what comes from the exploration. (What I think is this if older people engage with space exploration I feel like at the end they would realize why I’m I working so hard if I’m not going to be there when it happens anyways. So because of this I think starting at a younger age to engage with space it’s more safe audience because also in the future they would actually be able to influence humanity future.

    – The major unit projects fit together in a sense .In Unit 1 it started with me telling a little bit of myself, what I care for , where I came from .In Unit 2 I made a research about something that I care about which is peace. In Unit 3 I am making a poem about this subject .

-The reason why I chose to do a poem is because I want to push myself to do something I have never done which is the reason why .I want to push my limits .In my opinion, a poem is something that will most interest the people because news about this war has been read by so many people over the years so a shorter version about this will widely be read because the poems of subjects like this are not something that we see nowadays

1- I became interested in this topic because I always loved poems .Once again I have never done any poems and I am finally given the opportunity to do something. I want to push myself to my limits and build something with a subject that interests me .

2-My purpose in making this project is to let people know that a poem can be written about a serious topic like this .The specific audience I am targeting are those who are involved just as me wanting peace, the people who want to know more about this ongoing war but don’t like to read long pages .If I am satisfied about the work that I was able to do I will probably post it on social media

3-I chose to write a poem and I think it is the best way to attain the audience I am targeting. I think it is the best way to get to the people who want this war to stop and to know why this war doesn’t stop without writing hundreds of books.

    – I chose to stick with my genre (poem).I started writing little by little by watching videos on YouTube.

Before I began my research, I remember staring at the floor for a solid 5 minutes, wondering what kind of research topic or questions I could come up with. It wasn’t that hard to come up with research questions, since there are a lot of issues that deserve attention. However, as someone who gets bored by doing something that’s out of interest, I already know that coming up with something under pressure that is not relevant or interesting will just make me unmotivated. Therefore, I want this research to be something that I like, something that makes me interested and excited to look for reliable resources online to help answer my research questions. Looking back, the Philippines has always caught my attention because of its economic issues, the reason why I came up with my research question which is “What are the psychological effects of childhood poverty in Manila, Philippines?”. Childhood poverty or poverty in general is a big problem that my country is facing, especially in places like Manila, the capital of the Philippines. I decided to shed light on this issue, by choosing this as my research topic to address the things that need to be addressed. Such as how poverty affects children’s mental health, what are the cultural traits that help them cope with their everyday lives, their coping strategies, and their perceived reason as to why they are in poverty? A lot of questions run through my mind whenever I think of the word “poverty”, as I witnessed children suffering because of poverty back in the Philippines, I always wondered if poverty would hinder them from being successful in life. Or they will use education to escape their miserable life.

You’re probably wondering why I chose this topic out of the issues that are circulating the world that also deserve to be given attention. And to answer that “why” question, I was inspired by my father’s life when he was young. His family isn’t in a state of being impoverished, however, they are too poor to afford their needs in daily life, especially his needs in school. He once asked me “If you were in my state during my childhood, would you choose to strive to get a better education to escape poverty, or would you choose to stay in poverty and drown together with your family?” And that question hit me. I witnessed extreme poverty in Manila and I always wonder what would be the children’s answer if they were asked the same question. This research is directed to people who are interested in finding out how poverty affects the psychological well-being of an individual who suffers from poverty, educators, anti-poverty programs, lawmakers, parents, students, news, etc.

-How do you think the major unit projects fit together? How are they related? Be specific and use examples from each (not direct quotations from your work, but the themes and ideas). Try to draw connections between your narrative, bibliography and now your research project.

Both units focus on the same topic. However, Unit 3 will not include exact information. Instead, it will reflect my personal thoughts and connections, offering a more personal perspective.

I decided to build a website for my research project, because it’s a more interactive and visually interesting way to share information. Unlike a traditional essay, using a website I can include things like images, videos, and links to other resources, which makes it easier and more engaging for people to understand the topic. I think a website is also a great way to reach audience who might not want to sit and read a long essay. building a website, it makes me excited because I believe is the best way to share my ideas because it’s flexible and makes it easier to play around with the information.

I became interested in this topic because I feel that as a Venezuelan I wanted to learn more and stay informed about the economy in Venezuela, especially since it’s my home country. For me, this topic brings up a mix of emotions. It’s heartbreaking to see how the people in Venezuela are being affected not only by their own government but also by external influences, like the U.S. While I understand that these sanctions are meant to pressure Maduro to step down, they seem to be hurting the Venezuelan people more than Nicolás Maduro himself.

Did you throw out your original idea altogether, and if so, why? Who/where did you turn to for help? When did you panic (if you did) and what did you do about it?

    1. Rhetorical Situation and Choices

I’m building a website to educate people about the impact of U.S. sanctions on Venezuela in a way that’s easy to understand and visually engaging. My audience includes students, activists, and anyone curious about international relations or Latin America. A website made sense because it’s shareable, interactive, and can include videos, visuals, and links. I used logos to inform, personal pathos to connect emotionally, and credibles ethos to build trust.

    2. Genre Considerations

I chose a website because it’s flexible and lets me present the info in multiple ways, images, videos, and links. It’s also easy to share, so it can reach more people. A website felt like the best way to make the content accessible and engaging for my audience.

    3. Doing the Project

I started by researching the topic and sketching out what sections the site needed. Then, I used a website builder to design it, focusing on making it simple and eye catching. Im still doing some changes and adding more information.

For me the two go hand in hand since in my unit 2 I taught everything about the Galapagos Islands and their animal reserves and having all that information as a base I can use it for my unit 3 which will be about why you should travel to the Galapagos and help these animal reserves continue to function and stand for many more years. One of the reasons why I decided to choose this topic as my project is because as an Ecuadorian, I want more people to know about my country and indirectly help this beautiful place. Besides the fact that it is one of the most famous places for its flora and fauna, I plan to make it all in a video where I will put images and subtitles for a better understanding. Also, I think that people interested in helping the ecosystem and in the care of the flora and fauna would be very interested in this and obviously people who want to travel to this island.
