4/9/25: Unit 3 Writing in a New Genre Proposal

Throughout the semester, we’ve seen people talking about (for example) education in a variety of different genres. In each of these instances, the author is trying to reach a different audience and they pick the genre that will best speak to that audience. Think about James Baldwin’s speech, or Jamila Lyiscott’s poem. These are all different genres. Why might one write in any of these genres? Who do these genres reach?

In this unit, you’ll be writing about the topic you researched in Unit 2 for an audience of your choosing– so now it’s time to think about what genre you think will best reach your audience!

WRITE: You will need to write a proposal of at least 200 words outlining what you plan to do for Unit 3. Post on the class OpenLab site. This proposal should tell us:

· A 1-2 sentence statement of what you want to teach your audience (the most important thing you learned in Unit 2)

· The audience you are trying to reach

· The genre you are planning to write in and why you chose it

· A plan — how do you intend to get started?

· Anything you might be worried about. What are your concerns about finishing this project?

Submit your writing here as a reply to this post. IF you have any questions or need clarification about anything, please ask.

For my unit 3 project, I will build upon the research I conducted in Unit 2, “Immigration and Children’s Mental Health”, especially focusing on how immigration policies since 2017 have negatively impacted children, particularly those from undocumented families. The most significant takeaway from my research is that these policies have caused severe emotional stress, leading to anxiety,y depression, trauma, and death for children who fear family separation and deportation. I want to teach my audience about these struggles and highlight the importance of protecting children’s mental health the importance of protecting children through policy changes.

My targeted audience will be elementary and junior high school students, educators and parents. I believe a children’s book will be the best way to reach this audience effectively in a way that is engaging and yet educational to the younger audience. The book will show children of immigrant families who struggle with fear of family separation, but also to learn ways to seek help.

For starters, I plan to outline the story and develop the characters, and keep the language simple and appropriate for children. I will also focus on creating illustration that matches the theme of the book.

My concern is making sure that the content is age-appropriate.

      Rosana,

What a great idea! This will be such an interesting project. If you’re clear about your communication goals with this task, you should be able to strike a balance between the seriousness and potentially traumatic elements of your topic, and the innocence and vulnerability of the young target audience. I will be very interested in your project as it evolves. Keep me posted!

At this very moment I’m still deciding on the type of genre I would like to do for unit 3. My topic is “How Does Music Impact the Mental Health of Students” which has negative and positive impact’s on a students mental health. The most important thing I learned while doing my research in unit 2 was that music could help relieve a person who’s experiencing stress, anxiety, and depression.  It’s as if a song or album is made for a person and it almost has a radar to find them when they need it the most.

The audience I’m trying to reach are students who are  or adolescence who are having an out of body experience with music and how it impacts them.

I intend to get started by giving a scenario of how music impacted a students mental health either in a positive or negative way. A teen could be suffering with depression, then listen to a song about depression which could lead the teen to become more depressed. Different songs can change a persons mood or make it worse.

In unit 3 I hope to inform people on the role of AI in identifying cancer earlier and more accurately. I am making this project for patients, staff, or anyone passing through a hospital or clinic who may be wondering how technology is influencing oncology. I want to illustrate how AI can be helpful in identifying cancer sooner and more accurately, which will result in lives saved. I chose to create an infographic poster as an efficient visual means for distributing information. Most people in these health care settings do not have time to read lengthy articles, therefore I think a clear and uncomplicated poster with timeline would work best.

I plan to start by researching the images to use that resonate with the topic and then incorporate text around the images. I will do my best to keep my wording clear, friendly, and easy to follow. I also plan to build stability using real examples or statistics, earn credibility with opinions from experts, and include a human element to help patrons connect with the topic intellectually and emotionally.

My number one concern is making sure the tone of my project resonates with my audience.

In today’s society, too many of us are stressed in our workplace, creating a boring , dreary and unsettling atmosphere, resulting in no zeal for productivity or motivation. I want to bring forth some material that will assist not only myself but also the vast number of employees facing this very tribulation. I choose to use the infographic genre to illustrate my project as I think this will reach a wide number of my audience and captivate their attention in the event they may need assistance. I will be very detailed in bringing forth the information so that my audience of many different age groups can relate. This will basically be an expansion of my unit 2 piece. I will be portraying some pictures along with literature for knowledge. I also plan to provide many options to deal with stress, so that each person reading the information presented can choose the one that best suits them and their situation or if they know someone they can share it with. Writing this piece, I am hoping that the resources I relate to the audience will be deemed sufficient, in hopes that it will make a difference in the number of individuals who are stressed in the workplace.

-What personal investment do i have in this research issue chosen?

I chose this topic, to expose the hypocrisy in New York’s criminal penal system. Using one particular prison “Rikers Island” (amongst others), to describe my analysis. I will take you from the origin in which it was discovered, designed and what it’s purpose was in being created. And what it has become today. The research that i have accumulated is based on books and references that date back to the 1600s to present time.

-Why does my Argument matter as it relates to my topic?

I’ve been affected by this plague “internally” and “externally”. And my goal is to enlighten those who have no clue on the subject. And to speak on behalf of those who (both) “know” and “experienced” first hand, but don’t have a voice. And when i say “those”, i don’t mean only prisoners. Also the correction officers and the families of both. Because the families suffer as well.

-In what way have i narrowed my topic (specifics- what questions did i start with?

One question is constantly asked is: why does America profit more money than any country in the world off it’s prisoners, yet we have the least amount of people rehabilitated.

-what Genre am i considering for your unit 3 project?

I chose “Documentary” to be my Genre, because it best describes such a serious and truthful segment.

In conclusion, I will give a couple of solutions, I feel may help to cure this plague in this country, that has devastated so many families. But at the same time i fear may fall on death ears.

For my Unit 3 project, I’m deciding to present my research topic from Unit 2 â€śThe psychological effects Trump’s administration immigration policies have caused since the 2024 election” as a social issues documentary film. Doing my unit 2 project I learned more about the severity of the situation and how detrimental it is for a huge public. I want to reach a broad audience, and I think a documentary is the best way to do that. Videos are more digestible than text: you can watch them, listen in the background, and it’ll allow me to include more voices than just mine. Mine will be directed, but not limited to, immigrants in the U.S, people affected indirectly and activist who care about this matter. To make this documentary I’ll need to get an editing software and learn the basics, I’ll take from other videos made in this format to help me establish my structure, determine some trends I should follow to make an appropriate documentary. Once I have my structure I’ll put together a script with my voice and the questions I have to ask to go the route I want to follow. Once I have that I’ll start recording and interviewing people. Visually I’ll get videos from the news, maybe record some myself. Once I have all the material that I need I’ll put it together, my goal (ambitious if you ask me) is 20-30min.
