If you had to define genre based on our readings so far and your own understanding of genre, what would that definition be?
Think about each of the readings and their specific genre and support your definition with examples from the readings so far.
Log onto Perusall and look at your ideas and notes (and your classmates’ ideas and notes) on several of our readings about genre.
Identify the differences in genre between “First Day” by Edward Jones, “Schools are Killing Curiosity,” one of the James Baldwin writings that we’ve read (“A Talk to Teachers” and “If Black English Isn’t a Language…”), or Kerry Dirk’s “Navigating Genres.” Be specific. Talk through and demonstrate how each author uses genre and post here in the comment section of our class Open Lab site.
A genre is a category of a piece of work. The examples of the main genre includes: fiction, non-fiction, drama/play, poetry, essay, short story, novel and traditional Literature.
The difference between “A Talk to Teachers” by James Baldwin is that the genre of this article includes argument, history, and nonfiction. Baldwin published works in numerous genres, especially essays and novels. However the genre of the article, “First Day” by Edward Jones is a short story. Edward P. Jones is an American short story writer and novelist. And I believe that most of the genres of his stories, essay, or articles are short.
The genre is a category of artistic composition, as in music or literature, characterised by similarities in form, style, or subject matter. The examples of the genre are: fiction, non-fiction, drama, poetry, essay, novel and short story.
The genre of “First day” by Edward Jones is about short story/ essay writing. On the other hand “A talk to teacher” by James Baldwin is about history and argument.
We use genre to describe what we read, watch and listen to. Genre is something that is constantly changing. For example, different cultures have different genres or different descriptions of what they read, watch or listen to.
The article “Schools are killing curiosity” is an article genre. It can also be called educational essay I think because the author tries to explains to the audience (teachers) what to do to become better in their jobs-also educating the audience.
Other text “First day” is a narrative essay. The author talks about education and how it changes person’s life. The short story is told by a first-person narrator, who is also the main character.
The main difference between those two texts is how the narrator talks to the audience. In the first article “Schools are killing curiosity” the author talks about his observations and by explaining them he also tries to educate the audience. In the other text “First day” author talks about his own experience, what actually happened to him. He presents his story and the audience have a chance to reflect on it.
Genre is a characteristic of one person or thing or a category of artistic, musical, or literary composition characterized by a particular style, form, or content.
Examples of genre read so far: historical fiction, narrative (fiction/ nonfiction), essay etc….
In general, fiction refers to plot, settings, and characters created from the imagination, while nonfiction refers to factual stories focused on actual events and people. From the reading, the authors differed in their reading and characterized them in all different opinions. For example the difference between “schools are killing curiosity” and “ A talk to teachers” by James Baldwin is that on the first reading, the author spoke about personal issues about how people react over school when it comes to curiosity. In the article “Schools are Killing Curiosity” author talks about how schools limit children’s ability to ask questions and the importance of encouraging kids at young age, meanwhile embracing their curiosity is a part of education. When kids get curious about a subject, they are most likely to remember the information about the subject and naturally reflect on them. On the other hand, Childrens are born curious. But compared to the author James Baldwin writing ”A talk to teachers”, he proclaimed the responsibility educators have to addressing racism in America and empowering Black students to continue their fight for justice.
1- I would say that a genre is a category of ideas well explained that develops any type of writing that attracts people and generally, it can also be described as a type of artistic composition defined by similarities in form, style, or topic matter, as in music or literature.
2- In the article “Schools are Killing Curiosity” the author talks about how schools limit children’s ability to ask questions and I think the genre in this article is more about history I believe because it cannot be an autobiography because it is talking about events that have happened or are still happening.
3- In the article “Schools are Killing Curiosity” the author talks about how schools limit children’s ability to ask questions: genre history on the other In the article a “talk to a teacher” the author mentions Since I am talking to schoolteachers and I am not a teacher myself, and in some ways am fairly easily intimidated, I beg you to let me leave that and go back to what I think to be the entire purpose of education in the first place. The genre is also history because it’s talking about teachers and students. There is not difference between each other but similarly because both talk about society and students.
If I had to define genre based on our readings so far and my understanding of genre, that definition would be the frame in which the writer is going to work on. I think when describing and talking about genre is a little tricky. In high school is when I started to write more and now that I think of it before that I was more of a reading person. So, when I stared writing I remember my English professor would give us sometimes kind of fill in the lines outlines. For example, when we had to write an argumentative essay we had to write the two different points of view we were talking about and use some words like ”on the other hand, opposite to…”. So, that is what our writings would include since the purpose of the writing was to state our opinion based on evidence. Also, thinking about our readings so far I can see the differences in genre of “First Day” by Edward Jones and “If Black English isn’t a Language, Then Tell me, What is?. Just by reading both of them I can tell one is a story. “First Day” talks about a girl’s day in school. The purpose of that writing is to describe/write about this girl’s first day of school. Therefore, the writer uses narrative as genre. The writing includes characters that appear in the story/event. It also has a chronological order, so the events in the story are connected. There is also a setting like the school were the set of events take place. On the other hand, the writing “If Black English isn’t a Language, Then Tell me, What is? uses argument as genre. The writer states his opinion about what represents language. He responds to whether black English is a language or not. So he explains his position and explains why he thinks that way by using reasons/evidence.
A genre is a category of literature that producers and audiences self-consciously recognize as marked by a distinctive style, form, or content. The difference between “A Talk to Teachers by James Baldwin is that the genre of this article includes argument, history, and nonfiction. Other text “First day” is a narrative essay. The author talks about education and how it changes person’s life. “Schools are Killing Curiosity”The short story is told by a first-person narrator, who is also the main character. A public school teacher sets on a journey around the world to find out what the most innovative schools have in common. This adventure will challenge, not only her view of how we learn, but how we live. The genre is also history because it’s talking about teachers and students. There is not difference between each other but similarly because both talk about society and students.
In other words, genre categorizes movies. Categorizing movies makes it easier for the viewer to discover what he or she likes and will want to see. Putting a movie into a particular genre or category does not diminish the quality of the movie by assuming that if it can be put into a genre, the movie is ordinary and lacks originality and creativity.
Genre consists of four elements or parts: character, story, plot and setting. An equation for remembering the genre is: Story (Action) + Plot + Character + Setting = Genre. This becomes an easy way to remember the elements of a genre.
The above elements of story, plot, setting, and character equal a specific category of movie. These elements are discussed regarding how their variations create a different category of movie.
