The 1-2-4-All Challenge and… oh, yes, Hello!

5th Avenue, Bay Ridge

Your first assignment is to get to know each other. Technical writing is always a group activity and you have to interact well with each other if you are going to be successful–this will be just as important in your jobs as in your classes.

We don’t have a lot of time, just a month, so you need to get going. Your first task will be to respond to this post with a brief description of yourself. Post it in the comments below–much as I do below but in the comments section. Do it today (June 1), but don’t forget to do the second task, too (see below).

Let us all know who you are. You don’t need to say much, just enough to give an idea of who the others will be working with:

Though of Appalachian descent, I have been been living in Brooklyn for half my adult life. Though I have been teaching at City Tech for fourteen years, I have done many other things, including running a store/cafe for another fourteen years. Though I no longer do much technical writing, I am a writer, my most recent project being The Manhattan Project and the Dropping of the Atomic Bomb: The Essential Reference Guide. I edited it and wrote many of the entries. Though I love teaching, writing is my second passion.

Aaron BarlowPost something about yourself. include a picture, if you would like!

Your second task will be to respond to the prompt below today with a paragraph of your own on the people you are among right now:

Who are the people outside your window? What languages do they speak? How old are they? What are their main concerns at the moment?

Once you have posted that (again, today, June 1!), Professor Barlow will pair you with a classmate. Your third task will be to combine what the two of you have written into a paragraph on similarities and differences between what’s outside your windows. You will post that tomorrow in the comments. Your fourth task will be to work with one of the other groups, contact given by Professor Barlow through email (never post personal contact information here), giving a desciption of similarities and differences in four neighborhoods and posting that it the comments. You will post that in two days, on June 3rd.

Each group will then provide a volunteer point person to Professor Barlow who with then provide their contact information to each other. How you arrange contact beyond that (though emails, texting, whatever) is going to be your concern–but you will be able to contact the entire class, either through the point person for each group of, if you decide, by sharing your own contact info to the class–privately and not through OpenLab. You could decide to meet through Zoom or another video-conferencing app. Whatever route you take, you will have to remember that working with each other is at the heart of this class, just as it is the heart of all technical writing.

Your fifth task will be to combine, working together as an entire class, all six of the group descriptions into one reasonably short description of the people outside all of your windows. This will be the audience for the Technical Writing Coronavirus Challenge. These will be the people you will need to reach with what you, as a group, design and write over this coming month. You need to post the desciption, as a group (only one version), in the comments here on June 4th.

  1. Task 1

Hello everyone, my name is Gen Li. This is my second year at City Tech. I’m majoring in Electrical Engineering. While I’m not very fond of reading and writing, I’m willing to put in some effort. Also, I expect the same effort from whichever group I end up with.

    Task 2

There is no one outside my window. Although when I took out the trash, I saw three Rugrats with blond brownish hair running around and their mother sitting on the porch. The kids appeared to be 6-10 years old and woman looked like she’s in her early forties. They spoke English. Pure assumption here, but I think the children are wondering why they aren’t at a park or on vacation right now. The mother must be so thrilled to watch her sons toss around a miniature basketball in the little spot used to park the car. But at least they’re not potentially exposed to the coronavirus.

    1. We assume people are speaking English… I often wonder.

The emphasis here is not so much on reading and writing, but on communicating. Do that well, and you will do well in this course.

  2. My name is Joel and I’m a Queens native, born to Dominican parents. I major in Computer Information Systems at the City College of Technology and am due to graduate by next Spring. When I’m not spending my mornings at work and nights in school, I engage in many hobbies such as guitar playing, binge-watching shows on Netflix, and cycling all over the city. I hope to come out with as much as I possibly can in this course and my remaining time at City Tech.

  3. Task 1:
Hello all, my name is Chris Gyasi. I’m currently majoring in Computer Systems Technology at City tech.
I’m the middle child of 3 children and currently work as a pharmacy technician. Since middle school i’ve been apprehensive about doing group work mainly because people tend to have different things going on in their lives and work best under different conditions. I do not usually feel comfortable putting my grade in the hands of another or asking someone else to do the same to me . Though this has never stopped me from giving my best try and expecting the same.

    Task 2:

Looking out my window ( i live on the 25 th floor) i see two schools. One is a college and the other is a high school. Since i live in the bronx and these are schools i can assume a wide age range and multiple languages spoken. Both have little to no staff or students moving about them. Given the current situation of the world i can assume their greatest concern right now would be survival. I say survival because that covers many areas, whether medical due to the virus, financial due to unemployment, or whatever else they may be facing.

    1. One of the things we will focus on here in terms of group work is how to do it without being dependant on the other people. Your concern is a real one but, as you will find once you graduate, it can be overcome.

And you are right about survival!

Hello everyone, my name is Md Sakib. Currently I am a senior studying Computer System at New York City College of Technology. The past three years have flown by so fast, but I have loved every second of being here. However, after completing my bachelor degree, I would like to pursue my career in the field of Software Development.
I am taking this class to work on my reading and writing skills. Although reading and writing is not my passion, I will put the best effort in this class and contribute to the groups. Overall, I am very excited about this course.

        Task 2
I live in Jamaica, Queens. Since the neighborhood I live in is very diverse, I can see various types of people outside my window. I can see people going to the groceries, essential workers especially health workers, care takers are very busy to get to their jobs. They speak in many different languages. However, I heard people speaking Bengali, English, Spanish most often. Most of them are middle aged men. I can also see middle aged women but not as many. There are also young boys and girls hanging around. I can barely see older people in the street. Their biggest concerns at the moment would be getting rid of two virus: COVID-19 and racism.

        1. I wonder what you students are going to want to focus on, COVID-19 or racism? Though I first but coronavirus as the semester’s focus but I will be interested to see if you students would rather focus on justice–which, of course, has a lot to do with race.

  4. Task 1
Good morning gentle folks, my name is Sadeek Brown and I am originally from Jamaica. I enjoy playing cricket, football and listening to Reggae music. I am currently enrolled in the Electrical Engineering Technology (EET) program at the College, and for this class, I am looking forward to an exciting four weeks learning and bonding. Thank you and stay safe.
    Task 2
When I look outside my window, I see many Jewish folks young and old, ranging from all ages, but mostly middle age with families on this quiet side of Brooklyn. The area is called Midwood, which is in the vicinity of Kings Highway. Their common language is Hebrew which I enjoy listening to as they converse in public spaces and synagogues in my neighborhood. Their main concern is the Covid-19 pandemic that is currently reaping havoc on America and the rest of the world. The Jewish community has been hit hard with this virus.

    1. Ah, you like Reggae! Have you ever listed to the West African Reggae musician Alpha Blondy? I know little of contempoarary Reggae but I love some of the old stuff.

I know Midwood well. Though I am not Jewish, my wife is, and she grew up in Midwood (though she doesn’t speak Hebrew or Yiddish, the other Jewish language). You are right, that community has been hit hard by COVID-19–but so has the Caribbean community.

  5. I have heard about Alpha Blondy, but I do not know many of his songs. I know he has done similar songs to that of Bob Marley and with the reggae beat yet with the African twist. It’s good music. As for Midwood, it is nice to know your wife grew up here. It is a nice neighborhood. And yes, the Caribbean communities have been hit hard with the COVid-19 virus as well.

  6. Task 1
Hello everyone, my name is Jun Liu. I’m majored in Network Security. It is my last year in CityTech. I am currently employed as a representative in the Wireless Retail Shops. I like to play video games and read short novels. Please don’t assume that I am a good reader, because I like to read Chinese short novel rather.

    Task 2
When I look out the window I dont see people walking around or hanging around because I lived in Staten Island. It is a nice and peaceful neighborhood or except the the protest that happened yesterday at May 30. People are protesting because the death of George Floyd. As I was watching the news concerning about the 100,000 death caused by COVID-19, I realized that theme is shifting away from the COVID-19. I was hoping to see positive energy that might reflect the milestone we reached on the war against nature, except I see politicians rising the tension of racism in repositioning their image to the public.

      1. I think it’s better to stick with coronavirus because it’s a current situation and brought topic. There are many things to write and to think about this pandemic.

  7. Task 1

  8. Task 2:

I saw scared individuals every time I looked out my window. Living in a neighborhood where minorities are the majority, there are many things to be afraid of. Those who walk passed my house today spoke Spanish. They all wore masks as they were walking through the outdoors, in fear of bringing back home a threat to their families. A few of those who roamed the street were my neighbors, a middle-aged couple walking their dog. The rest were strangers but all of them females of various ages, carrying either groceries or strolling the sidewalk with their laundry carts. I received a notification on my phone today, alerting me of protesters who were walking through Jamaica, Queens, fairly close to my neighborhood. With the protests/riots being heavily covered by media outlets, our unemployment rate being the highest in over a century, while the nation continues the ongoing battle with a virus, there are many things to be concerned about.

  9. Task 1
Hi everyone, my name is Perven. I am currently enrolled in Computer System Technology (IT operation truck). This is my 3rd year here at NYCCT. I hope that I will get a very good insight through this course on pandemic or racism. I look forward to work with you all and my group.

    Task 2
I live in a place where my neighborhood is not too diverse. Whenever I look through my windows I see people are crossing and walking on the sidewalk with a face mask on. Although it is a bit hard for me to hear from my apartment they are speaking Spanish and English. Most of them are middle age and few are young. I think the main concerns at the moment for them would be getting their daily needs like essentials, as we are all trying to cope with this pandemic. And also to get freed from racism.

    1. Which is more important to people, coronavirus or racism? Yes, as you say, for most, just making sure that their basic needs are taken care of it crucial… but after that?

  10. Task 1
    Hello everyone,
My name is Mazen Alquaiti. I’m an international student lives in Brooklyn. I have been living in the US for almost 4 years now and its quit an amazing country to live in. This is my second year in City Tech studying Computer Systems. I transferred from Kingsborough Community College last year.

    Task 2

The people outside my window are mostly Pakistanis and Bengalis mixed with some Mexicans and Whites. the languages They speak are Pakistani, Bengali, Mexican , as well as English. It is a very nice neighborhood. Their main concern is the Covid 19 pandemic as this virus keeps spreading in the whole world leading to the death of hundreds of thousands of people.

  11. Task 1

Hello everyone, I am Miraz Nabi. I am originally from Bangladesh and live in Brooklyn. I am majoring Computer Systems Technology at Citytech. Though it is my fourth year, I still need a year to finish college. Writing is one of fearful things to me, but I feel excited and challenged about this course and hope to do well.

    Task 2

I see the courtyard through the window. There are some trees in the courtyard and I hear birds chirping every morning. I see many types of people coming out of their building. They speak in many languages mostly in Bengali, English, and Spanish. They are mostly young and middle-aged people. Their main concern was coronavirus and now it is shifting to racism.

    1. Coronavirus and racism: yes, these do seem to be our main concerns right now. I will be interested to learn which the class wishes to concentrate on.

Maybe there is even a way to combine them into one topic.

  12. Task 1
Hello everyone, my name is Idrissou, I’m from Ouest Africa. I am currently enrolled in Computer System Technology at NYCCT. I enjoy playing soccer ball , listening to Africa music .
I’m a shy person but opening minded. I hope this 4 weeks will bring us enjoyment and less stress.

    Task 2

When I look outside my window, I see many things , From Schools to Groceries to Banks and beauty supplies. I live in Harlem, a place where everything is dense with flee market to almost anything you want or need but since the pandemic hit, everything went silence. From less interaction to no interaction. I miss everything. I miss the freedom of stepping out whenever or however. Everyone have to wear mask and gloves . people can’t bargain in a park and start playing ball without forcing the social distance and we were getting used to it until social distances become a privilege. The freedom of practicing social distance was taking away once one of our kind (George Floyd) was murdered. Now we fighting two opposite diseases. Coming together to fight as one and practicing social distance. we either getting killed by the police of the virus. It has been a stressful year so far and I hope this class will ease it out.

    1. I hope that this class will, as you say, “ease it out.” A lot of work, perhaps, but no stress.

You mention you are from West Africa. I spend four years there, in Burkina Faso and Togo, and love that part of the world.

      1. Hello Professor,
Nice to hear you have been to Burkina Faso, I am from Burkina Faso. Which part of the country were you living how did you manage with the language?

  13. Task 1
Hello everyone, my name is Tanvir Patwary. I am from Bangladesh. This is my senior year studying Computer Information System Technology at New York City College of Technology. I like playing Cricket, watching movies, and traveling. I decided to study Computer Information System because I always been fascinated by computer technology. As a result, I want to be Database Administrator so I can store and organize data for big companies. A degree in computer information systems enables me to achieve my goals and allows me to make a difference in the community. I look forward to working with you all.

    Task 2
I live in Queens which is one of the diverse communities in New York City. When I look outside of my window, I see all different age peoples. Most people over here speak more than one language such as Spanish, Hindi, Bengali and Urdu etc. Every Saturday afternoon I noticed a group of 20-25 years boys do car racing in the front street of my house which creates a loud noise. I also noticed my next-door neighbor (Adult) who throw BBQ party every couple day on their driveway with foods and music. The main concern now for most people would be going back to normal life as more people struggling to support their family’s with food and supplies because of CVD-19. But the last few days country shifting to wrong directions as racism is growing all over.

      1. Task 1
Good morning everyone, I’m Alpha Barry, junior student at New York City College of Technology, majoring in Telecommunications. I’m engage, and willing to put my effort to work in this course of Technical Writing. Also, to learn as much as possible through out our Professor.
        Task 2
I leave in the Bronx. I’m surrounded by people who speak English, Spanish, Bengali, and French. Once I look out of my window, I see a very quiet atmosphere due to the pandemic of Coronavirus. People taking precautions to limit the spread of this desease. People also worry about the high rate of unemployment that could make the American living a bit difficult.
Recently, the death of George Floyd paired with the Covid-19.

  14. Task 1
Hello everyone, My name is Emily Mendieta I’m originally form Ecuador South America but I’ve been living in Queens NY for the past 8 years. I am currently majoring on Entertainment Technology here at City Tech. I love playing softball, I’m also fluent on Spanish since its my first language. My hopes on this 4 weeks is that I’m able to stay on time for assignments and group work since we only have 4 weeks.

    Task 2
When I look outside, I see many people walking around the neighborhood although since this pandemic less people were walking through here or which I would had expected since we need it to stay inside. Queen is known for the big amount on hispanic or Latino residents which my neighborhood its one of them, I live by many people who are from where I am which makes us feel more like if we was in our country. Every week I noticed the grocery on the corner about 5-7 men sit outside of it and talk until the sundown and listen to Spanish music, I also noticed my neighbor from right across my house every Saturday do party or BBQ not sure but they play music very loud until 4 or 5 am. Every since this pandemic many people in my neighborhood including myself and my parent is that the would the country be able to ever go back to normal, everyone around here is so used to staying inside just to make sure I know may people around here do not even want to go back to work because there is still the thought in their heads about the virus. I really hope we can get through this and with the protest going on as well.

  15. Task 1

Good morning everyone, I am Yicheng Wang. Originally from China now live in Queens. I am majoring Electrical & Telecommunications Engineering Technology at Citytech. Writing is one of the dislikes day to day thing for me, but I feel hope this course can help me develop a better foundation.

    Task 2

When I look outside of my window, I see mostly youth or elderly. Most people over here origins from Asia. Most time of the days streets are quiet and peaceful. The main concern now for most people would be going back to the normal work cycle. But in the last few days, the major issue has shifted to concerns of safety due to the riot and the raids that have grown all over five boroughs.

    1. There’s an old curse, “May you live in interesting times.” We certainly are living in one! You students are taking a course when the world is shifting around you. A strange feeling, indeed.

  16. Task 1:
Hello everyone, my name is Rajeen Khadka. I am currently majoring in Computer System Technology. My aim is to work in a software development field after I graduate. Some of my hobbies include playing the guitar, watching movies, playing sports etc. I am very excited to be taking this course because I believe I lack writing skills. So, I hope to improve on it.

    Task 2:
I live in Jackson Heights, Queens. The area around my place is very diverse. As I look down from my apartment, I see lines outside the groceries stores. There are usually people rushing to work in the morning. There are people from all age groups. The area is still crowded even in times like these. I believe the majority of the people living around here are from Asia. Mostly from countries like Nepal, Bangladesh and India. The main concern at this moment is definitely COVID-19. This area has definitely been hit hard.

  17. Task 1.
Hello my name is Ana Panameno. I am entering my senior year at City Tech, my major being Computer Systems and Technology. I work for Department of Construction and Design. I live in Bayridge with my boyfriend and my cat, Oreo. I like hiking, playing video games and puzzles (crossword, sodoku and kenken). Upon graduating I hope to work in my field, and start my journey to getting my Masters.

    Task 2.
I live in Bayridge and when I look outside the window it’s a melting pot I assume they speak Cantonese, Mandarin, Arabic, Italian and Spanish. In my building there are older people maybe 65 and older, but when I pass the park to get groceries, I see a lot of younger people playing and working out maybe 15 – 25. I know a lot of the older people in my building are concerned about their safety and health, they ask that all tenants wear masks. While the younger crowd, some are wearing masks, but some just look like they’re trying to enjoy their time off. I started seeing more businesses open so I’m assuming they’re trying to get their business back on its feet after being closed for 2 months. There’s a construction site across the street from me and they’re pretty much grateful they have a job. Considering the answer is different for everyone it’s actually interesting to see what matters the most to certain people during times like this. Of course, judgement free.

    1. I live in Bay Ridge, too. Near the entrance to the bridge at 92nd Street.

And you are right, it is interesting to see what matters to different people. For a good Technical Writer, that is always significant.

  18. Task 1
Hello everyone, this is Sahriar Islam. I am a CST major in the software development track, and I am a senior at NYCCT. This class is a part of my requirements for graduation. What I am looking forward to in this class is to develop my writing skills, as it will help me out in my IT carrier. I am very enthusiastic about this class.
    Task 2
I am a resident in Richmond Hill, Queens. I have been living here for 5 years. My neighborhood is very diverse. When I look out my window, I see people from different communities are hanging and walking around. Most of the people speak multiple languages and mostly I hear English, Spanish, Bengali and Punjabi. Since the COVID-19 hit in NYC, people have been feared of this virus. I notice they always put their mask and gloves on when they come outside. They used to hang out on the corner of the street, but now I do not see them hanging out anymore. It is obvious COVID-19 has affected on their normal movement. As we know currently, COVID-19 is the main concern for everybody. Also, recently people witnessed the brutal killing of George Floyd, a member of minority community that add fuel to flame. Mass people are worried about this deadly pandemic as well as recent violence.

      1. I think we could focus on both pandemic and violence. Pandemic can not be avoided; at the same time, we should not keep ourselves aloof from recent brutal killing and post violence which disturb our peaceful living.

  19. Task 1
Hello everyone, my name is Lutfar Nahar. My major is a Computer Network and Security at New York City Tech College of Technology. This is my second semester here, I finished my associate at LAGCC. I like to listen song when I have available time or I feel upset. I am taking the course for improving my skill.
    Task 2
I move to Brooklyn like five months from Queens. I am living near from a school. When I look out my window, I can see kids, teenagers and middle age people walking by sidewalk. Most of people are African-American and Bangladeshi. I heard they are speaking English and bangali language. Some time I am listening their conversation. I came from Bangladesh, so I can understand bangla language. People are less likely to go out while COVID-19.

  20. Hello everyone, my name is Ervin Zhao. This is my senior year at New York City College of Technology, I major in Computer Systems and Technology with information technology as my track. I hope to improve my writing skills as English isn’t my strongest subject. I travel around the United States a couple of times during the year but unfortunately due to the pandemic this year any travel plans were canceled.

I lived most of my life in Brooklyn, Borough Park. It was mostly Cantonese and Toisan speakers but many of them moved out to Bensonhurst, Queens, Staten Island, California when a flood of people from China started to move in. My family recently moved to Staten Island right before the lockdown. I haven’t really explored my neighborhood yet but it seems to be a very white neighborhood. There are a couple of Asians living in the area but I’ve only seen them once. I think everyone’s main concern is to keep their families safe. There are many children and elderly in the area and they could be infected from the virus if not careful.

  21. Task 1:
Hello everyone! This is Asif Nabi, I’m from Bangladesh which is located in South Asia.
I live in Borough Park, Brooklyn. I am currently majoring in Computer Information Systems
    at City College of Technology.

    Task 2:

I live in the middle of two communities. So, when I look outside of my window,
I see Spanish people and some Bengali. Most of them speak multiple language such as Spanish, Bengali and English. Considering the current situation, their only concern is to survive this pandemic time.

  23. Task 1

Hi class, my name is Mohamed Sawadogo. My mayor is bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering technology. I have one semester left to complete my degree. I am from a small country in West Africa called Burkina Faso. I am working as electrical inspector which is helping me build some experience in my field of study. The first language of my country of origin is French. Therefore, anytime I take an English class It always an opportunity for me to improve my English .

    Task 2
When I look outside my window, I see many people from the Caribbean mainly from Jamaica. The main language above 210 St and White plain road in the Bronx where I live, is English mixed by Jamaica local language called Jamaica Patois ( English based creole). I don’t understand Jamaica Patois, but I manage sometime to listen to what they are saying to pick some word. In my area most people are above 40 years old, they are quiet and behave nicely. The main concern of people in my neighborhood are to be in good health during this time of coronavirus pandemic and to see businesses reopen as soon as possible.

    1. Nezabrey, lafi. I see by your name that you are Mossi, maybe with family in Ouiyagouya? I taught at the University of Ouagadougo more than thirty years ago and learned to love Burkina Faso.

      1. Lafi bala, Yasiida Nasra Gomdda moore’ Congratulation for a quick remembering about the Mossi Language. Yes I am one of them . It’s really nice to see you speaking it. Your description about the country is perfect and I am surprise you still have some good memory about the country after 30 years. I also studied in University of Ouagadougou at the FLASH/Geography department before coming here to change my major. Barke woussogo

        1. Toh! A young man (he must be in his fifties now) named Salam Sawadogo worked for me and I like him very much. He had never been to school but, a really smart man, he started to learn to read and write while I knew him. His family, in Ouiyagouya, lived in a compound where they still had his grandfather’s 1960s Mercedes in the courtyard, though it had not run for years. There are thousands and thousands of Sawadogos, I know, but I have always liked the name thanks to Salam.

  24. Task 1

Hello, My name is Christopher Bello and this is currently my last class before I can graduate with my Bachelors of Technology in Computer Information Systems! I’m excited to finally be over with schooling, although my learning will never really end. I’m not really sure if I’ll pursue a Masters or just decide to grab as many certifications as I can in fields of IT I find interesting. I already have a job as an IT Associate Manager and have 4 years worth of IT experience behind that, but sometimes I feel like I gave up on my passion for Game Development too soon. I have doubts about whether I’m in the right field or not, and if there will ever be a time to transition. It’s hard to decide on something that shapes the rest of your life at a young age.

    Task 2

Looking outside my window, I see a brick wall on the other side of my driveway. Being in the middle of the house I don’t have a very good view of anything happening out front or in the backyard, but I do hear some of the sounds of my neighbors. Spanish music, what sounds like family game nights, some various construction work. I live in Bensonhurst which is one of the most ethnically diverse neighborhoods within Brooklyn, predominantly Italian-Americans such as myself, but increasingly being known for hosting a fair amount of New York’s Chinese, and Hong Kong populations. Hispanic cultures are also fairly present, though African American’s are a small percentage here. It’s a fairly peaceful area as well which is always a nice thing.

  25. I’m an Asian American Born in Nepal raised in Brooklyn. had to learn a lot of things growing up in a horrible neighborhood which is very good now. I’m a Computer Science major in my last semester. I joined the military right out of Highschool and learned a lot from that. Hoping soon I become a police officer since that is my goal.

  26. task 2 – I live in a very Hispanic neighborhood, everything you see outside my window is the Dominican flag with their wonderful music and, food and culture. The majority of the neighborhood is filled with young minds trying to renovate the community. As the world moves forward I start to see more of other races come about. About a year or two ago you would not see a “white man” walking among these streets but now they live right next door. Change is good, it can mean new ways to improve the community.
