“Bottle Bell” by Ashley Lebedev

In the process of looking for interesting photography articles to post in this lab, a photography website called “Bottle Bell” appeared in between all those millions of websites that came up from Google, and caught my eyes because of its uniqueness and curious name. I was intrigue by the name, so I decided to click on it and see what it was all about. After observing through the four galleries accompanied by mysterious and melancholic music presented by the photographer Ashley Lebedev, I think that her photographs are beautiful and fascinating because they have the power to change your mood (my mood changed from euthymic to dysphoric). In my opinion, the settings, colors, lighting. effects and contrasts make you be part of the photographs. And the music helps the viewer to get the deep sentiment of each of them.

Furthermore, each of Mrs. Lebedev’s portraits tell a story which reminded me of the photograph by Robinson, “Fading Away” because it made me think that she may has the same concept as him about Art.

Ashley Lebedev is a 27 years old artist and Fine Art photographer….. what to know more about her? Go to this website http://www.bottlebellphotography.com/intro.aspx

In addition, Mrs. Lebedev tells the viewers about the metaphoric meaning of “Bottle Bell” and how she came up with it!

Mexican Art gives face to victims

Mexicans artist gives faces to victims lost to violent crimes such as murder, drug violence, and human rights abuse. The creators of the projected wanted to place a face on to statistic normally presented, they wanted to create a  more personal experience. The idea and concept was inspired from that of other artist such as a famous french photographer known as JR, who created large portrait that was pasted throughout Paris. The purpose of the Portraits were to discourage city residents from committing crimes by introducing to pass victims of similar violence.

I found this article to be very interesting as it took a creative and optimistic approach to preventing time. While I am not sure if this is a truly effective way of stop the violence throughout the city, it never hurts to try. While these portraits might discourage some citizen from committing a crime, I doubt it will truly make a big impact.

Discussion Topic: Street Art and Photography

6-ft photo mural on Mulberry and Prince

In 2011, the French street artist JR launched a global art project called Inside Out Project that uses photographic images to address issues of social identity.  Everyone is invited to participate.  Individuals or groups send in their black and white photographic portraits and JR sends back photographic posters to be displayed in the home communities and online.  Some of these posters are also visible in New York City.  At the moment, a 6-foot photographic mural from the North Dakota Native American series is located by Mulberry and Prince Streets in downtown Manhattan.

The Inside Out website‘s official statement tells us:

INSIDE OUT is a large-scale participatory art project that transforms messages of personal identity into pieces of artistic work. Everyone is challenged to use black and white photographic portraits to discover, reveal and share the untold stories and images of people around the world. These digitally uploaded images will be made into posters and sent back to the project’s co-creators for them to exhibit in their own communities. People can participate as an individual or in a group; posters can be placed anywhere, from a solitary image in an office window to a wall of portraits on an abandoned building or a full stadium. These exhibitions will be documented, archived and viewable virtually.

Explore the Inside Out Project website and watch the short trailer.

Trailer for the Inside Out Project

What do you think of this democratic project that combines street art and photography?  What do you think would be a good idea for a photographic wall project in your community?

This is the last Discussion Topic that I am posting for the course.  You are welcome to comment/post up until Sunday May 20th.

Civil War Photography…

This article is a direct relation to what we previously discussed in class on Civil war photography…It goes in depth on the impact these images have in todays modern time…the article shapes how viewers look at war and the public perception…Carte de visite were used for people to save as a memory not to say it was worth remembering, but to hold on to the most drastic change in history…Photographer Brady was mentioned for his images…captivating scenes of what occurred..Some photos looked staged and realistic, but used to demonstrate its main purpose of the War and what it entails…

Hasselblad Camera in Space

The Hasselblad camera was made very popular during the Apollo Space Programs when man landed on the moon. Even though it is not commonly seen nowadays, it is still being used by most professional and very serious amateur photographers. NASA chose to use it for their Apollo space program due to the long life span of service and the quality of their lenses, as well as the dynamic nature of their lenses and magazines.

I got the chance to use a Hasselblad camera (with Digital Back which enables connection to computer for digital image processing) for the first time in my life whiles working at Sony Music. I can say from this experience that, the camera is very powerful and produces better quality than most new camera brands of today.

Below is a link to explorer more pictures on Aerial Pictures taken with the Hasselblad by Astronauts.

Tintype Photographs in 20 Minutes

Photobooth is a gallery where visitors can have their portrait taken and printed on tintype using the collodion process in 20 minutes.  The shop is located in the Mission District in San Francisco, California and is run by Michael Shindler. Individual 4×5 tintypes are about $60 each which is not bad for a piece of history with your picture in it. Here is a short video of owner Michael Shindler explaining the collodion process and how these photographs end up looking.

Marilyn & Me–Lawrence Schiller Exhibit 5/31-6/30/12

Marilyn & Me–Lawrence Schiller Exhibit at Chelsea’s Steven Kasher Gallery

Photojournalist, Pulitzer Prize/Emmy/Oscar-winner Lawrence Schiller will be on display at the Steven Kasher Gallery in Chelsea this upcoming June. His intimate (and beautiful) photographs of Marilyn Monroe will be exhibited–many of which have never been on display for public viewing.

The first link below is exhibit information for viewing.

The second is a link to the same site, showing many images of Marilyn Monroe that will be shown. These gorgeous black & white photos show Monroe in an artistic light, displaying her natural beauty and display of femininity. Schiller captures Monroe at what seems like candid moments, as she lives a lavish life and stays beautiful while doing it. Even the posed photos seem to have an artistic touch to them. The photos taken at her 36th birthday party capture intimate moments of the bombshell with many friends surrounding her beauty.

Astronaut Photography

The link below displays some really cool pictures photographed by NASA astronauts at a space station. I just wish the article included what kind of camera was used to take these gorgeous pictures with such detail and precision.

Photo #9 from the provided pictures is my absolute favorite. Astronaut Dan Burbank captured “airglow,” which looks absolutely stunning against the Earth’s horizon.

It amazes me how beautiful space photos look. The astronaut’s point-of-view is a great perspective of space travel. Having the ability to see what they are experiencing is great–and to know there are one million photos makes me curios to see more.

New camera prototype produces a description of the photo, rather than an image

this is an interesting article i came across. This new camera produces words instead of the actual picture!they say a picture is worth a thousand words but in this case they will only be a few. this could possibly turn into a new trend to take over apps (even instagram). this descriptive new camera is still new and interesting because instead of just simply taking and viewing a photo, this camera takes a pictures, the picture is then sent to a real human who describes it, and sends it back to you. This product is still in the making and they have recently just made a prototype

i personally think that this new descriptive camera is interesting but not many people will buy it. i can write what i see in a few words by myself. there is no WOW factor or anything to make the consumers feel like it is worth the money. The article does say that this will help consumers search for their photo’s more easily, kind of like with itunes where you simply type the name and the song will come up. we will have to wait and see if this product will take off and become a great hit, personally i dont think it will go very far.
