Assignment 1 - Adaptive Reuse

Precedent Studies Template

Precedent Studies- Adaptive Reuse- focuses on preservation, renovation, restoration, and adaptive reuse.

Good design is often informed and inspired by precedent studies of previously designed projects. For this assignment, you will select  examples of youth hostels or dormitories  with adaptive re-use in mind. You are to compare and contrast, and you are to determine the type of Adaptive reuse.

Your digital presentation can incorporate text, images, quotes, etc. to describe basic facts about the project, for example: Location, Designer, Owner/Advocate, Date Constructed, Cost.

There were three different types of adaptive reuse described in the lecture:

Installation-The old and the new exist independently

Insertion- It is built to fit , is placed within the confines of the existing

Intervention- The existing building is so transformed that it can no longer exist independently

Find an Locate two examples and identify the type of adaptive reuse. , Document and analyze each project. Utilize an 11×17 digital format, creating a collage of images, diagrams, and notes on individual sheets. Ensure the examples are relevant in size and program to the specified hostel.

You will analyze each project with simple diagrams using Photos, plans sections and elevations to define:

Type of Adaptive reuse

Location, Architect (if known), number of beds/rooms

Previous use

New Use

Show images

Diagram:

Hierarchy

Private vs public

Circulation (from site throughout building)

Show lighting – natural

Show materials, patterns, massing

Create a list of the spaces

Show diagrams of any other important elements

A short  200 – 300 word narrative description of the design approach should be part of the presentation.

Show the process and summarize using  the “milk and cookies” template to summarize your findings.

Do not forget to list of resources that you used.
