Assignment 1
This semester your studio will be two projects that will be housed in the same building/site.
The site is an urban site with an existing building. The ground floor will be dedicated to a commercial use – some type of restaurant, while the residential portion will be a hostel to help with the need of extremely expensive overnight accommodation within New York for visitors.
The first assignment will be gathering data on restaurants.
The research should include:
- Two different precedent studies – select two restaurants that are located in an urban environment that you can find floorplans, drawing, photographs…
- Determine the flow of each restaurant – show on plan- public +private
- Show where deliveries are made
- Note all the spaces, offices, storage, seating, waiting, bar, kitchen, loading dock…
- Draw a bubble diagram of each restaurant showing the spaces
- Show images of the materials used
- Show images of the lighting of each space
- Describe the atmosphere, what the style of food, loud, quiet
- Analyze if the design represents the type of restaurant
- find information including measurements, requirements for a commercial kitchen.
- Find dimensions of seating, tables , spacing… what are the different kinds of seating -2,4, tables, booths, bar…
- Find dimensions of the program elements of the restaurant
This research is due for Thursday and will be presented to the class.
All work should be done on 11×17 format horizontal – 2-5 sheets.
