Module 2- PLAN DETAIL (Drawn and recorded by Prof. M. Loo) Note that for students in ARCH1231 after 2025 we are no longer drawing the ‘HATCH’ patterns for this DETAIL. Watch this Video until about 4:50 to learn the bulk of the technique needed. In addition, when drawing the interior metal studs for this Commercial Building, with Floor-to-Ceiling dimensions of over 10′-0″ the gauge and construction type dictate that the metal studs are to be spaced at 24″ on center from each other. Forward the video to 8:40 to view Prof. Loo layout the TEXT with LEADERS on this PLAN DETAIL. Note the carefully drawn construction lines for all text, the spacing between lines of text, space between text and adjacent graphic lines, and how he’s drawn the LEADER lines (first horizontal, then at an angle) with ARROWHEADS pointing to the object it defines. TEXT should be a progression of defined items from inside – out or outside – in. LEADERS should read distinct and separate from the construction graphics that make up the detail and must NEVER cross another LEADER.

Module 2- WALL SECTION (Drawn and recorded by Prof. M. Loo) Note that for students in ARCH1231 after 2025 the bulk of time spent on this drawing is the detail lines ABOVE and BELOW the window. Prof. Loo expertly demonstrates the layout and drafting of the TEXT, LEADERS and ARROWHEADS on this SECTION drawing. NOTE: Each component in the drawing should be identified only once. The reason? When there is a change to an item (which happens all the time and often several times) you need to change that ONE item in this drawing and avoid discrepancies within the drawing. OVERARCHING RULE: When there is a discrepancy between TWO construction documents of different scales, the drawing at the larger scale prevails. If your PLAN at 1/8″=1′-0″ and DETAIL at 1/2″=1′-0″ have conflicting information, the Cost Estimator, Contractor, or Supplier will assume the information at 1/2″=1′-0″ is correct since it is generally developed later in the CD process and assumed to be more thought through than a smaller scaled drawing.
