What Worked:
– Dramatic Lighting
– Model interaction with drum
– Quick setup time
– Shot composition
Didn’t Work:
-Lighting on the drum
-Getting a full shot of the drum
Next Shoot:
– Position the model differently
– Try new lighting effects
-Experiment with color gels
-Try new back drop
This is so general that it doesn’t really help you plan ahead. I think you have a real challenge here because a studio shot of someone playing one drum doesn’t have the excitement of shooting a real performance.
Certainly your suggestion to gel the lights is a good one. You should also think about maybe having the drummer and drum in silhouette with color in the background.
