In the past, I have used other creative work and never really thought too much about giving the creator of the content their due credit. But I didn’t use the artwork for promotional or commercial purposes so I believed it would be okay. But reading up on the AIGA copyright it gave me a clear understanding that you should always give credit where it is due. This got me thinking maybe not now but in the future I might have work or photographs that were being used by people without giving me credit. This is why now I will give any artist’s work I use the due credit that they deserve, because the same way not receiving my due credit made me feel is probably how they are feeling and it’s not a great sensation. So please credit anyone’s work that you end up using whether is be for your portfolio, presentations, and creative work.

The Fairey Copyright Case is a great example to why knowing the copyright laws. So what exactly was the Fairey Copyright Case, this was a street artist who took a photo reference of obama from an AP photograph and used it to create a promotional poster to help in the campaign of previous president barack Obama. AP noticed that the poster was becoming popular and they were seeking compensation and damage money from this street artist’s sales of posters since he didn’t license to use the image. I honestly feel like if it was a reference image and he took the time to create a new art piece from the reference the least that could’ve been done was give credit to AP and the photographer of the image. But at the same time I feel like this is why a lot of artist are afraid to take a reference image from the internet and create new ideas off the reference because of all these copyright laws.

Ethics in Graphic Design: 1A and 1B

In the design industry, ethics are key. As designers, it’s more than just something we check off, it’s an integral part of everything we do. Design ethics is about following guidelines and principles that protect everyone. Keeping everyone’s rights and interests in mind makes our workplace trustworthy, accountable, and respectful.

Maintaining ethical standards shows we’re professional and reliable, which is essential for building a good reputation. To build trust with clients, peers, and the public, we need to stick to ethical principles.

However, not following ethical standards can have negative consequences. You might ruin your reputation, damage your credibility, and offend cultural norms. That’s why design ethics are so important to us. By doing so, we build a strong foundation for our work and create positive change in the world around us.

At my current internship, I was tasked with photography work revolving around the projects being conducted by the organization. Whenever we filmed or photographed during a project we were required to have the subject sign a form allowing for publication of their imagery. This was important because it was a form of consent to be able to share the image of the subject for organizational purposes. The AIGA business ethics on the Use of Photography goes into depth as to how one must conduct and establish a professional relationship with a client. This is important because during my internship I meet with new people all the time and it’s my role not to make them nervous or scared of the equipment ensuring them that they will do fine in front of the equipment and ensuring that their photograph or video footage will be used for the organization professional purpose. It also talks about the use of crediting others when one uses another photographer’s image as a resource and how they should credit that other photographer. This is so that individuals are credited for their hard work.

Reflection on the Internship Experience #8

The internship was a well-expected experience, where I was able to gain valuable skills, I was able to experience actual work in the industry. I was able to be guided properly in developing keys skill that I lacked and how to further improve upon them. I could honestly say that my photography skills were highly improved as my angle and lighting decisions have been more consistent.

There were many people who were there helping guide me the right path from my supervisor, fellow interns, and the people I got to meet along the way professionally. I was able to further build my network and gained valuable lessons, advices, and tips for my work and future. All the projects, that I was a part of was fun and enjoyable with a lesson in each one of them. But overall I saw progress within myself of how I conducted myself and the work that I was presenting. So, if my internship supervisor see’s this I just want to say Thanks again for everything you allowed me to be a part of and helping me improve as a creative.

Role Model/Mentor #7

For my internship, my role model and mentor was my supervisor he taught me a ton of useful techniques to become more productive. He was super helpful and knowledgeable and was always open to lending a hand to any intern who needed to talk or get information from him. For the first 2 weeks, he was showing me how to do proper color corrections and how to increase the productivity of photo editing faster. While at the events and photo sessions, he was always running the room and showing why having lights or specific angles can drastically make a difference in your photos and videos. As already mentioned he is knowledgeable and the reason for that is because he has been working at the organization for more than a decade now allowing him to learn and progress as an individual.

I aspire not to be like my mentor but to be able to one day say that I have the charisma and knowledge that he has to pass down to more designers coming into or interested in the field. My learning experience with my mentor was what you can call genuine because it was mainly hands-on work and guidance that allowed me to learn so quickly. He allowed me to learn from my mistakes and show me what I need to improve upon before making any finalizations, not holding or micro-managing me every step of the way but assisting when it was needed.

Collaboration/teamwork #6

During my time at my internship, I was given the opportunity to not only develop my skills but also get to work with the other interns. We were tasked with going to meetings, events, and locations within the organization. For many of the projects, there was great communication between not just my supervisor but also my fellow interns on the tasks we were given. It gave me the chance to talk one on one with them learn about them and help establish that foundation for friendship and networking opportunities. Got to meet this great intern who is an illustrator and works on character designs which are very interesting.

So many of the tasks that we did were mainly exploration and documentation of the building belonging to the organization. Using our skills we worked and updated each other on what we were doing when we all got together for a team meeting and ensuring that we are doing work to help benefit the process of the organization’s projects. Much of the other work is mainly working with the supervisor and ensuring that we are meeting the deadline of the projects and are all up to date and not falling behind as events at the organizations are on the day and can’t be changed to another day we can cover it.

First event #5

Photo by Olga Fedina from Pexels

The first event I attended was quite interesting as it was to promote all the clubs that the organization offered to the students who were on campus. There were a lot of clubs that were there for recruitment purposes and some were there to make the atmosphere more welcoming to the freshmen students who were looking to join a club. During the event, there were snacks and drinks given to anyone who showed up and signed up for the organization’s social media platforms. I was given the task of going around photographing the student’s interaction with the club members and their progress in obtaining more information.

It was interesting to see so many students come together and discover a club they didn’t even know was within the organization. I even go to interact with everyone there at first people came up to me and asked me if I was taking photos and if I could photograph them. I felt special in a sense since I normally don’t get people to come up to me and request for me to photograph them so this was a new experience. Overall, the event went smoothly towards the end there was a group of students who started to all come together and play music, it was just a great time.

First Project #4

For this project, I gained a unique perspective of the city through the opportunity to explore various neighborhoods and appreciate their distinct architecture. I developed a better understanding of the organization’s role in the city and how its buildings contribute to the urban landscape. Through capturing photographs of these buildings, I was able to highlight their unique features and how they differentiate themselves from neighboring structures. Additionally, capturing the Brooklyn Bridge was a thrilling experience that allowed me to feature one of the most iconic landmarks in New York City, all while honing my photography skills and broadening my knowledge of the organization’s physical presence in the city.

Moreover, this project presented an opportunity for me to collaborate with my fellow intern, leading to a meaningful bonding experience. Together, we worked to capture the best shots by discussing different angles and approaches and offering valuable feedback to one another. As a result of our teamwork, we obtained a diverse range of perspectives that highlighted each building’s unique characteristics. Moreover, the collaboration also provided me with an opportunity to learn from my colleagues by sharing photography tips and tricks, which will be beneficial for my future endeavors. Overall, this project allowed me to showcase the organization’s presence in the city and provided me with a unique experience to learn and collaborate.

My responsibilitie/Role #3

Photo by Erik Mclean from Pexels

While working at the organization, I was tasked with photographing events being held during my scheduled time. I was to go most times with my supervisor or an internship colleague to the different departments which were holding student interactions events or were holding progress projects that were being conducted for that department. After going to those departments and getting to photograph the event or progress project, I was to then meet up with my supervisor and go over what will be coming up for the following week so that I am to come prepared with my equipment. In addition to this, I was to select the best photographs taken that day, edit the images thoroughly by doing color corrections and removing unwanted items within the images then compose them into a folder and upload that to Dropbox.

That would be a typical day for me but when I didn’t have any task to do I would be assisting with projects that my supervisor had to oversee. I would help out with equipment setup and adjustments that needed to before everyone else who was participating in the project were to arrive. This gave me a chance watch see what my supervisor was doing and learn from how he communicated with others and handled the situation to go according to what he wanted to have a successful photo session.

How I obtained my first internship #1

BY EVG Kowalievska

When I started searching for my internship, I was applying online on job boards such as Indeed, Linked In, and Handshake. I went as far as joining internship interviews online being held by big organizations such as Nike, Google, and Amazon. Unfortunately, I wasn’t one of the selected few which discouraged me from searching, but I continued to search and keep applying. In the process of also applying for these internships, I continued to update my portfolio and LinkedIn page in the hope of increasing my chances of being accepted to the internships I was seeking.

Fortunately, I had kept in contact with a few of my professors from my years at school and I reached out to them asking if they knew any organization or individual who was looking for an intern. I got a reply back from one of the professors I had reached out to and we set up a meeting time to discuss what the internship would entail from the days I would be available to the task and responsibilities I would need to uphold to be on time with project deadlines. I accepted the internship position knowing that with my current skill sets.
