From the Field

Following is a report from that field trip.

On March 19th, 2012 our Graphic Communications Workshop traveled to the Marriot Hotel in Time Square. There we attended a publishing expo. There were a lot of different companies there, which ranged from typography, to binding, to commercial publishing, to kindles/tablets, and to websites. Each company had its own specialties and provided a lot of interesting information. The three companies which intrigued me the most were C-M Books, mag+, and Texterity.

Bertrand Elmer Cushing and Jimmy Malloy founded C-M Books aka Cushing Malloy Books in 1948. Until 1969 they were working from two different locations in the Ann Arbor area, but then they came together and reside at 1350 N. Main Street still today. Bertrand ended up buying the company from the Malloys and running it himself. After Bertrand died his son Tom took over, with the help of his two daughters Margo and Connie. Eventually Margo left the company but Connie stayed. Connie became the CEO in 1999 and still holds that position today. She tries very hard to keep it family oriented and keep up the great customer service. They are best known for publishing and the book binding the do.

Mag+ is known for creating perfect iPad or Andriod Tablets apps with no coding! Mag+ is an easy to use tool for creating and managing digital content on the iPads and Andriod Tablets. Right now Staffon Ekholm is the current CEO and he is expanding the company by providing classes on digital publishing in Shanghai and Singapore. Mag+ first made their debut in 2010 releasing the award winning PopularScience+. They are promising a great future, and offer many different tools to help get anyone started. They have free tools that you can play around and learn their software, while there is also software that you could pay for and get unlimited access, making and putting as many applications as you please. It would be best to always try it first and play around with it to try and learn it before you actually buy it.
