Reflection #3

Think about a time when you joined a new group activity (maybe a team, religious retreat, club, or workplace).

  • How did you feel when you first joined?
  • Do you recall a moment when you felt like you were part of the group?
  • What benefits did you get from participation in the group?
  • What can you do to help yourself feel like part of a group at City Tech?

I joined the biology club at my school. I felt nervous at first since i did not know anyone, however the other members were very welcoming. We did activities and we worked on a project together. I think in order to feel part of a group at city tech , I need to be open and communicative with others.

Hi Rowaida! I’m happy to hear you were welcomed into the club in your school and that you had fun! And yes, you are right – in order to feel part of a group – you need to be more open minded and communicative with others. I hope you join clubs/organizations here at City Tech and find good friends! :))

I remember when I first joined a group in high school I played soccer my senior year. The benefits I gained was something other than school to focus on and better time management. Although the team could’ve been better it did keep me occupied doing something else. In order to make myself feel like a part of a group in City Tech I’d join a club related to my major.

Hi David! I’m glad to hear that you gained different benefits in your soccer team during your senior year in high school! And of course – joining a club related to your major is a great idea! I hope you have a great time in your club! :))

One of the best group activities that I joined was in my workplace. At first, I was very nervous to interact with everyone and wasn’t confident in being able to work with them since I was new at my job. Eventually as time went on, I got more comfortable with my job and with the people around me. We’d be able to talk, crack jokes, and even just have a good time working during the same shift. A way I could feel like a part of a group at City Tech would be to have an open mind and try conversing and connecting with new people, joining new clubs, or study together.

Hi Joselyn! I’m happy to hear that you had fun at your workplace. Like you said – as time passes, you will feel more comfortable with the people around you and you will feel close to each other. It just takes time! Remember – here at City Tech, we have different clubs to join (make sure to attend the club fair once the semester begins.) Have fun exploring new things! :))

I first felt like I was a part of the mock trial/moot court team when the team, valued my input and existing legal knowledge, and applied it to the case we were fighting. I learned about more foundational case law and doctrines in the team as well as courtroom etiquette and how the civil judiciary functions. I think joining a meaningful and relevant club that I have a genuine interest in will help me feel like part of a group at City Tech.

Hi Bernie! I’m glad to hear that you learned such amazing things in your court team! And of course – we have many fun clubs here at City Tech! (make sure to check them out during the club fair.) I’m sure you will find a club that is both meaningful and relevant! :))

in Highschool I joined the step team and at first I was pretty nervous because I had never done step before. Some benefits I got from being part of that group was new friendships and since I put myself out there my fave became more familiar to some teachers. I felt like I was part of a group when we would all brainstorm together to come up with new moves. At city tech I can feel like part of a group by putting myself out there again and not being so shy.

In my high school, I’ve had rotating shop classes where it had very demanding work with heavy paperwork and metalwork, shared with fellow students. This was very overwhelming initially, however it was a great learning experience as time went on. This helped me become more socially active with peers, stay consistent with jobs and paperwork, and overall give me a good sense on what it’s like to have a team to work with.

    • Shahzoda

Hi Aaron! I’m glad to hear that you got through such a overwhelming shop class and gained such great learning experiences. I hope you will continue to use those skills at City Tech as well! Have fun with your new friends! :))

In high school we had teams of volleyball, and I just started playing so I didn’t really know how to serve the ball or pass it around the players. I felt very anxious bc they were all really tall and it was hard passing the ball around. The moment I felt like I was apart of the team was when I was late to the park and when I went to play my teammates weren’t playing, they were waiting for me.I was benefitting from the team by learning a new sport and learning to work as a team. I can help myself feel like part of a group at city tech by showing up in clubs or extracurriculars or in spaces where people share my interests and goals.

Hi Maram! I’m happy to hear that you had such great friends in your volleyball team and that were able to learn something from them! I have to say – we have so many clubs and extracurricular activities to keep engaging and for you to learn even more things! I hope you will check them out! :))

during high school I always wanted to join the soccer team but what too scared to join alone. I tried to convince my friends to join with me but they weren’t interested so I decided to join by myself. At first I was very nervous especially since I’m a very shy and awkward person I didn’t know if I would’ve fit right in or be left out, however they were all very sweet and welcoming. I started to feel that I belonged there when I realized how caring and supportive everyone was. Being part of the group helped me become more social and I was able to make new friends and have more connections with teachers. At city tech I can help myself to feel included by encouraging myself to join clubs or get to know people who have the same interests and make new friends.
