Lab 7 – Physiology of the Respiratory System

Activity 1 – Using the LabQuest2

Determine lung volumes and capacities. Your nostrils must be held shut when taking these measurements.
1. Everyone must measure his/her TV. Take a normal breath and breathe normally through the spirometer. What is your TV? ______________________

a. Define TV. ______________________________________________________________

2. To determine the ERV and IRV, breathe normally and after a normal exhalation forcefully inhale as much as you can followed by a forceful exhalation. Determine your IRV and ERV as indicated on the LabQuest2 instructions.

a. Your IRV is ___________________
b. Define IRV ______________________________________________________________
c. Your ERV is ________________________
d. Define ERV

3. a. Determine your VC by taking a deep breath and forcefully expelling all the air from yourΒ  Β  Β  lungs. Your VC is ___________________.
b. Define VC ______________________________________________________________

4. VC can also be calculated using the follow formula;
VC = TV + IRV + ERV or use the chart with predicted VC.

5. How are numbers from 3 & 4 similar or different?

6. Determine the TLC.
TLC = VC + RV(is about 1200ml)
Define TLC _________________________________________________________

7. Indicate how the following are measured or determined

Activity 2 – Relationship Between Thorax Circumference and Lung Volumes

Lung volumes are affected or determined by gender, height and age. If you look at a predicted capacities table, one would see these three factors as variables. In this exercise we will determine any relationship between thorax circumference and lung volume. The IRV, ERV, TV and TLC will be determined.

1. Now that everyone has determined his/her lung volumes, measure the circumference of each other’s thorax at rest and at maximum inhalation. Normal ____________________ Maximum __________________

a.Β  Measure the height of each other (cm). __________________________.
b.Β  Predicted vital capacity (based on age and height) ________________
c.Β  Recorded the results below

2. Describe any relationship between thoracic circumference and vital capacity.

3. Why are males VC capacity volumes higher than that of females?

Activity 3 – Effect of Exercise

1.Β  Use the data collected previously as the baseline values
Select one someone as the test subject and have them exercise for 5 – 5 min.
Immediately following exercise, take the TV, IRV, and ERV. Use these values to calculate the remaining capacities.

2.Β  Describe the effect of exercise on lung volumes and capacities.

3.Β  How would these values change in someone with COPD?
