Can figure ground be compared to notes and rests in music?

I think that to an extent that notes and rests in music can be compared to figure ground in art. On a sheet of music there are several different types of notes and other symbols that make up different patterns and formats. Some notes are filled in and others aren’t however that doesn’t make a difference since the music sheet is the white background space (also known as the negative space) and the notes and rests are the black figures and marks on the page which makes up the positive space or the artistic figure of the paper. Negative and positive space is what makes up figure ground entirely so I think that there is a connection between figure ground and symbols in music.
