    Chapter 9 summary
The world’s largest industry is tourism. Everyday there are thousands of people who travel whether it is by car, train, airplane or boat. People had been traveling all around the world in the past using animals when technology wasn’t as advance as today. Today people travel for work, vacations, or just visiting someone.
Tourism is one of the biggest currency exchange contributor. It brings revenue to which ever country or place they visit. It is one of the contributing factors to boosting a country’s economy. In one of the slides, it also said it builds “international understanding, peace, prosperity, and respect for human rights and freedoms” which really does mean something to be with all the terrorist new going around lately.
During the 1800s, people traveled on animals trading spices, silk, weapons, food, building material, or anything. Until trains and boats were invented traveling began to become easier and much faster. Which, as a result got more people to travel. Then came cars, cruise ships and airplanes which now has gotten everyone to travel. The cost of time to travel has dramatically decreased.
Cities are growing larger and to help with the travels, there is a new system called the Hub and Spoke System, which allows travelers to travels from one small city to another. This system has two benefits according to this chapter, which are airlines can maximize passengers loads and service more cities at a lower cost.
The economy on tourism has Americans to spend around $94 billion in traveling alone. Also in this chapter it says around 60 million international traveler visit the United States each year. There is a method call the “Multiplier Effect” which basically is when a tourist spends money to travel to a place and spends money, that money they are spending is being reused to purchase more goods or services around that community.

In the field of hospitality management there are many fields you can go in to. There are airlines, hotel industry, and restaurants. In this field it’s all about exploring and having fun, I would love to get into the airlines field. I want to work for the famous airlines, Jet Blue. They have one of the cleanest and best customers service around. The founder of this amazing airline is David Neeleman and the company’s Ceo and president is Robin Hayes. Their parent company is JetBlue Airways Corporation with their headquarters at Brewster Building, Long Island City, New York. Jet Blue is in John F. Kennedy International Airport, Fort Lauderdale–Hollywood International Airport, Logan International Airport in Boston, Long Beach Airport, Luis Muñoz MarĂn Int’l Airport in San Juan, and Orlando International Airport. Their Fleet size is 222 not too high compared to the other airlines. Even though many airlines are the same, Jet blue gives their customers a great time. They respect and do their best to keep customers satisfied. Jet Blue’s advertisement is everywhere in train’s buses, television, and on streets. They have a well-known slogan “You Above All” and a logo that has blue circles that make a cloud. My career goal in Jet Blue is to learn and explore in this company. To be part of the Jet Blue team would be an honor because of their benefits and the workers. Many customers have great reviews of the customer service and it would be great to be able to work with them.

They want to open more job opportunities in Orlando and most importantly the location will be a bilingual call center. It will provide English and Spanish speaking customers.

Hospitality is known to accommodate guests, and make sure they get the proper services needed. The word hospitality comes from the French term hospice, meaning to provide care/shelter for travelers. The hospitality industry is described as a fun, and fascinated place to be. And it offers advancement opportunities. My area of focus in this industry is to become a chef. The person who influenced my decision is a well-known chef, who is called the king of chefs, his name is Auguste Escoffier.
The reason for this is because, I’ve always been fascinated with how the different types of ingredients makes a dish special, and how does that ingredient contribute to the food. Escoffier was a master in that area. Auguste Escoffier was born in France October 28, 1846 and pass away February 12, 1935. Escoffier was a chief, culinary writer and restaurant owner who influence the development of modern French cuisine. A lot of Escoffier ideas, and ways of working was based on another prominent chef known as Antoine Careme. Careme wrote about French “Haute Cuisine,” Escoffier however, made his recipes more modern.
It would be an honor to work with or for Mr. Escoffier because he amplifies every recipe, and makes it better. Today, Auguste Escoffier left behind a legacy. That help creates more jobs in culinary industry. He invented some 5,000 recipes, published Le Guide Culinary textbook, and developed approaches to kitchen managements. Culinary institutions and famous chefs around the world continue to teach his recipes.

One place I have always wanted to work since when I chose this major was a Marriott hotel, any Marriott hotel to be honest. But since I live in New York, and they do have one of their top tier hotel in the city which is New York Marriott Marquis, so this one would be great. I chose to be in the hospitality management major because I like meeting new people, making new connections, learning new things. Also I already am working in the field, not the one that I am studying specifically which would be Hotel/Resorts, but I am actually working in a restaurant as a server/bartender. I believe that any experience that I get in the field now can be very helpful later after graduation. So I tend to stay and work in the field as much as I can until then. The more experience that I get in the field, the better of an addition I would be to their team. One reason I’d love to work for the Marriott is because they take care if their loyal employees. I have learned that you become family when you work after a certain amount of time, and you get to stay in all their hotels for free. This right there is major because it means that you can travel a lot and never worry about hotels rates and fees. And you would still get treated like a King as Marriott is a luxury type hotel. Another reason why I’d love to work for the Marriott is MONEY. Their revenue was about 14.5 billion dollars in 2015. They can afford to pay their employees well, especially employees that contributes a lot on the hotel functioning smoothly and properly. I will soon start applying for hotel jobs, mostly front office or doorman, to start getting more experience in the hotel business as I go to school and get my degree. I am patient, hard-working and respectful so I might get lucky start a little something towards my career as I still go to school
