Tourism is the world’s largest industry it provides governments with substantial tax revenues and offers the greatest global employment prospects. There is interdependency between the various segments of tourism: travel, lodging, food service and recreation.
Five Ages of tourism
-Pre-Industrial Revolution
Travel was mostly for religious purposes.
-Rail, Automobile and Coach Travel
Rail travel influenced the building of towns and cities, caused hotels to be built near rail depots.
Auto travel produced motels and a network of highways.
Rail travel was influenced by the need to move goods and people from one region of the country to another.
Trains were well needed in densely populated areas.
Traveling by car is the largest segment of ground transportation, it began in 1895 in Germany.
Bus travel is a convenient and economic mode of travel, allowing travelers to relax and enjoy the ride.
-Airlines
Competition between airlines to provide lower fairs has had a significant impact on increased air travel.
-Cruise Ships
Most cruises sail under foreign flags because they were built abroad to avoid labor costs and construction costs and also because US ships were not permitted to operate casino-type gambling.
There are different types of tourism including: Cultural, Heritage, Nature, Culinary, and Volunteer.
