Think about a time when you joined a new group activity (maybe a team, religious retreat, club, or workplace).
- How did you feel when you first joined?
- Do you recall a moment when you felt like you were part of the group?
- What benefits did you get from participation in the group?
- What can you do to help yourself feel like part of a group at City Tech?

A time when I joined a new place was when I was hired to work in TESO LIFE. I was very nervous at first joining the company. The main reason I was hired is because I was able to speak Chinese which made them decide to give me a chance in the company. A moment I recall when I felt like I was part of the group was when there were a lot of my co-workers that were interested in fashion or went to F.I.T. The benefits I got from participation in the group are, that I get to know my co-workers better, I get to know my boss better, I get to network, and finally, I get to make some friends.
What I can do to help myself feel like a part of the group at City Tech is to make friends, be with like-minded individuals, attend the club fair later in the month of spring 2025, etc.
Hi Jesse,
It’s great that you used your language skills to secure the job and found common ground with your co-workers. Your plan for City Tech sounds great! Making friends, connecting with like-minded peers, and attending events like the club fair are all excellent ways to feel part of the community. Nice post!
As an Automotive Photographer I decided to help my high school growing their social media
when I joined, from the first day they asked me to cover a basketball match between our school and another school, it was a new experience for me as I usually make it for cars not people :), but I tried my best making the best (full) video ever was made by a student as I was encouraging my school team to win and we won Thank god as I still helping John Dewey in their social media stuff, btw I tried to contact city tech to help them with their social media (without any charges) VOLANTIERING to help them appearing on social media but they ignored me.
It must have really felt so sad to be ignored despite you volunteered to do it for free, don’t forget CityTech is a government school and it’s not owned by an individual, before any decisions can be considered it has to pass through parliament, just look at the bright side, you get to do your trials and errors with other people’s project and it makes you more better, just keep building yourself up, and the right crowd will contact you, by then you will charge for it. People value whatever comes with a price, I won’t be generous if it requires my skills and time anyway.
Hi Mahmoud,
It’s impressive that you used your skills as an automotive photographer to help your high school’s social media grow. It’s great that you’re eager to volunteer and offer your talents to City Tech as well. Don’t be discouraged by the lack of response, maybe try reaching out again or exploring student clubs that handle media and events. Nice post!
A Time when I joined a new place was when I had gotten hired to work at Sweet Green. I was very much nervous and scared because I didn’t know anybody at all, and I was new and had to start from 0. The main reason why I had gotten hired is because I was able to speak two languages which were English and Spanish. A moment I felt like I was part of the group was when everyone was very welcoming and included me in everything that was going on but mostly when everybody treated me like I was part of the family. The benefits I got from this job was that I learned to socialize more and to know it’s okay to make mistakes but especially That it’s good to meet new people , and good to being open to learning new things. Something I can do to Make Myself feel like a part of city tech is try to socialize and be very open to new things, and meeting new people.
Hi Yahira,
It’s amazing how your language skills helped you secure the job at Sweet Green, and it’s even better that your team made you feel like family. The experience of learning to socialize and embrace new things will definitely help you at City Tech. Being open and meeting new people is a great way to feel connected. Nice post!
I remember when I joined the chess club, I was so happy to have found it because I had always heard about them organizing tournaments and things like that. I still remember my first time competing seriously against others in the club. I didn’t win, but out of everyone, I came in third place, and the moment was really nice. Although I didn’t win any monetary prize, I made friends and got to choose the theme for the next pizza party for the club. One thing I do to help myself feel part of a group is standing out among the people around me, but in a way that’s not awkward.
Hi Christopher,
Joining the chess club and placing third in your first tournament is a great achievement! It’s awesome that you made friends and got involved in the club’s activities. Standing out in a natural way is a great strategy for building connections and feeling included. Nice post!
Sometimes in life, winning may not be the most important thing in life because you can actually get to learn along the way. It’s good how you made friends despite not winning. And having good friends in life is really important, and I’m glad you have those kind of friends in your life. 🙂
I can relate to your personal experience as I have competed in friendly competition myself and will always feel satisfied or accomplished as the competition ends even if I didn’t win.
In my church, you get to join a spiritual group once you hit a certain teen age, it was my first time to be in a gathering to do some activities together with people of my age, I felt nervous at first because I don’t like facing the crowd and most of the activities involved in the program required you to talk and face everyone, I don’t want to be the center of attention or focus, I always sit at the back and try not to attend the program many times. At the long-run, I started receiving calls from some members, they called to check up on me and asked about my day to day activities, they encouraged me to always speak up when it’s my turn to talk in the group, I was able to open up and started confiding in them. I get to speak in the gathering and this boost my confidence, The group focused on how to set teenagers on the right track and not getting swerved away by society pressure and temptation. The group really impacted into me positively as I always held my head high whenever I found myself amidst the gathering of my peer group in school. I get to understand I am not alone, and this gives me the courage to impact into others in my school, even at home with my siblings whenever they are going through some teenager crises. I get to help a lot of them and let them know they are not alone. My Enochlophobia vanished without me even realizing it. At CityTech, I am still making my enquiries on the group to join because I will need to put a lot into consideration since I have a responsibility at hand already. I know it will be a great experience for me since it will be my first group in this country, I am hoping to learn new things and meet new people.
Hi Adeolayinka,
Overcoming your fear of crowds and building confidence through the support of your group is inspiring. It’s wonderful that you’ve used those lessons to help others. At City Tech, finding the right group will surely help you continue growing and connecting with new people. Nice post!
I used to do swimming as sports. Back in 2015, I started from joining the beginners team. Then my coach saw that I was too good for the beginners team, so she joined me into the good team after 1 week. It honestly felt good because I was part of a team and we had our own team name. I got more interested in swimming after that. After school I would look forward to it everyday. We would do competitions and I used to be very competitive. After about 1 year, I got into the Olympics team, which I was very excited about, cause that was the time I really accomplished something on my own and I felt really proud of myself. Later we did go to capital Olympics competition. But I was sick that day so one of teammates participated for me and got 2nd place. That was the moment where I felt like having teammates is good because we can cover eachother in these kind of situations. The benefits I got from being part of group is that I didn’t feel lonely, cause I had my teammates with me. Also when we used to do competitions, and even 1 of us would win, we would feel really proud of eachother. After joining, I learned how to support others, I learned that being in a team means 1 or nothing. I think I’ll do the same in City Tech. Joining clubs and making new friends. And I should also do networking with them, because as I grow, my life will change and it’s just good to have connections.
Sorry *all or nothing*
Hi Shahzoda,
Your journey in swimming is inspiring, from quickly advancing teams to joining the Olympics team, it shows your dedication and talent. It’s great how being part of a team taught you the value of support and unity. Applying those lessons at City Tech by joining clubs and networking is a fantastic idea. Nice post!
I was in the step team in elementary school. It was very fun, and since I was there for two years, it felt like a genuine community. We went on two trips to Atlanta for a competition. In Atlanta, I tried chick fi la for the first time ever, and it was super good. At the competition, we won first place, which made the bonds between the team feel even stronger. At city tech, what I could do is join a group that has my interest in mind. By doing big activities together, the bonds between us would tighten.
It is amazing how you have the talent for step at such a young age and how you found your community there. I agree with you on the part where you join a group that sparks your interest.
Hi Dwann,
Your step team experience sounds amazing, especially with the win and strong bonds you created. Joining a group at City Tech with similar interests is a great way to build connections. Nice post!
A time when I joined a new group activity was my high school student council, when I first joined, I felt isolated and distant from the other members of the group as I joined later on. I felt part of the group when I went to one of our regular meetings and was able to greet every member, showing that my connection with my group improved a lot compared to where I began. The benefits I got from participating in the student council were getting information about the school before other students did. Things i can do to feel a part of City Tech, I can be more social with my classmates and professors to develop more connections and participate in more workshops and social events.
