Lets review logos today

Today we should narrow down logos and vector 1 or 2. Do the type size text print out and bring to next class. Also bring in a logo that is one or two colors. Lets finish this next class.

Vendor POSTERS:

We will design a poster
to promote the shake station festival.

Start thinking of design continuity- You will start now designing elements of a typographical brand/look- logo, fonts, icons, colors.

One DESIGN for this poster 11×17 . Portrait only for poster. Use different fonts- 1 or 2,-3 fonts MAX.

Us the copy from the pdf below, logo, fonts, icons and colors to make this poster or book exciting and easy to read. Print out options. Add bleed to file, use indeisgn only.

Hierarchy- Headline: Grill and Chill Fest (design this, make this most important)Then description paragraph. Next- vendor information.

add – www.shakestaton.com and logo.
Social Media (Instagram) icon and add a QR Code

Limit the use of font sizes, too many can be hard to read and limit colors, make this easy to read when I am walking by.

Topics: Grill and Chill poster deisgn

  • Vendor Poster Design for this event.
    • Be reflective: What is working? What is not working?
      • Following a grid?
      • You are limiting the use of typefaces to two?
      • Is visual hierarchy clearly established?
      • Is type size appropriate?
      • Is there contrast between foreground and background?
      • Alignment is organized or does it seem scattered?
      • Use indesign to create this.
      • Are images credited? and can be used?
      • Use the shake station logo
  • Download this PDF and use the content to make th poster.
  • Try some different layouts? Does it need images? Fonts are easy to read when printed? Sketch out different layouts on paper?
  • Motion (First talk about typography and motion)

DO NOT DO– WILL DO in another class.
Participation activity> During Class

After Effects: First Looks at type in motion

1. After Effects Basics TRANSFORM tools

New Composition in After Effects: 1080 x 1080 pixels. Enter: Duration 0;00;05;00 (this is 5 seconds). Add a background color.
Go to LAYER>NEW>TEXT> Add a word
again
Go to LAYER>NEW>TEXT> Add a second word
Make sure that you have two layers

I have to layers (COMD3505 and TUESDAY. Select Typeface, size, variable such as weight or posture)

NOTE: THE ANCHOR POINT determines where things move from. By default it is placed lower left of the layer.

If you need to move your anchor point to the center. Click on the layer hold command and double click on the pan behind icon

Select one of your layers and open Transform> This will show you the basic TRANSFORM tools of After Effects.
Move the time indicator on the timeline. Hit the Stopwatch to create a keyframe for Scale and Opacity. This is showing that on the 7th second of the animation. COMD3505 will be at 100% size and 100% opacity
Move the time indicator back. make changes to Scale and Opacity. This is showing that on second .5– COMD3505 will be at 0% size and 0% opacity.

YES DUE: Due next class

Continue Word Marks / Logotypes for Shake Station

Objectives

Lets review types of logos

Students evaluate their sketches and:

Decide which typefaces are best to use for specific logotype

  • Find appropriate typefaces, that match the look of your sketches.
  • Look for typefaces that have characteristic similar to the look that you want to achieve. For example, if you are sketching with a condensed look. Find a typefaces that has condensed within its family or available variables.
  • Avoid taking letters outside their intended proportions.
  • Note that some display typefaces do not have lower case version, Go to Adobe Fonts. Avoid system typefaces.

Decide which tools (Adobe Illustrator) are best to use to achieve design.

REVIEW & DEMO / Participation Activity

How to activate typefaces from ADOBE fonts

  • Make sure that you sign-in to the same Adobe account. No download, just activating (add Family or Remove).
  • Although the Adobe library is available for us to use, it is a good practice to look at Licensing.

You can use other typefaces that are not from ADOBE if you wish. Please note that it is your responsibility to download them and activate them every time that you are using a different machine. Look at licenses. Some typefaces cannot be used.

_____________________________________________________

TOOLS in Illustrator can help you create a logotype or a letter-based mark, but be careful when using typography and keep in-mind the points above.
We do not want letters to be distorted or hard to read.

Let’s create a 3 x 3 inches document with three ARTBOARDS.

RGB and 150 ppi is ok. We will only use on screen and will not be printed.

2 steps

1. make Three (3-5 ) versions of your logos, black white.

Sketch them to a bigger size- 5″x5″ square or begin to make them in illustrator if ready. If not continue to explore and sketch or make version with fonts in illustrator.

Icon, abstract or mascot- make them into a pencil drawing.
2. Pick and print out a font to go with it. Color Black.

3. Print them out- as many as you want. Put crop marks on them and trim to 5×5. Black and white. You can place them up on the board when you come into class.

Create ONE document in Illustrator

Topic

-Continue to work on Word Marks / Logotypes for SHAKE STATION- use feedback from class.

-Selection of additional typefaces and other assets for other components of the brand

Developing a TYPE IDENTITY

Let’s look at some case studies. These are posted in FONTS in USE

San Francisco Design Week

Cinergy Film Festival

Bien Urbain Festival

A note: careful with trends and eye candy.

During Class

Now that our logotype is almost complete, we will do edits

What needs to improve: Scale? shapes, curves, KERNING, tracking
Reconsidered? Typefaces, alignment, tints?

This image has an empty alt attribute; its file name is Screen-Shot-2024-02-08-at-10.27.56-AM-515x1024.png
Create a 3 x 3 inches document in Illustrator > 6 artboards
Your document should look like this
Place your final selected version from assignment on first artboard
Start editing and making changes. Sometimes these are subtle, and sometimes they are not. Here is where you are going to pay extreme close attention to DETAIL.
Here is another version

Start thinking about color version.

Select color(s) for your final version.

For now keep both CMYK and Hex colors
Do not use more than 2 colors for your word mark.
(One important note is that many word marks are somewhat fluid in terms of color. The color might change based on the application)

  • Avoid colors that have poor contrast (for example light yellow and white)
  • Avoid colors that are too similar (dark blue and dark purple)

In Illustrator, create an 11 x 8.5 document

Additionally we will decide on other typefaces for our festival identity.
At least one must be a variable typeface.

Research or Create images:

Although this is a type heavy identity, you may use some imaging. If you source them, they MUST be free to use and adhere to their licenses.

Read the following article:

In the Spotlight: Finding Public Domain & Creative Commons Images

RESEARCH at least 5 images

In Illustrator, create an 11 x 8.5 document
Place your research as shown/ Bring research to class

Here is my example. I am exploring two possibilities: Resource the images or draw my own icons.

I will go around class, checking status

Due next class:

More SHAKE STATION word marks- 10 to 15 more.
Can be made on computer or pencil sketch.

Label what type of logo they are
Think about what images or how do I feel when I look at the logo?

No need to upload visual research, but bring it to class.
