The most important lesson I learned from this internship experience was to have more confidence in myself. Throughout my work experience, I’ve been in a lot of workplaces where my potential was questioned by coworkers and management instead of being uplifted. It felt like a breath of fresh air to finally be in an organization where I felt appreciated. It was a really nice change. It changed my perspective on what a workplace can feel like, and it made me feel more secure in myself and in the design choices I make.
At the end of my internship my organization offered me to continue work for them as a volunteer. I accepted for now, but I ended up discovering that I want to pour my energy into bettering my portfolio and solidifying my designer presence. Interning for this organization showed me how much my growth as a designer really depends on what type of environment I’m in. It’s helped me realize that I do better in environments where my work is respected and where I feel comfortable bringing my ideas forward.
