2a) As someone that also considers themself as an artist, I understand the rules about using another creative’s work. I have only using another creative’s work in means as a reference or inspiration to supplement my design process. Looking at existing designs and color palettes help me understand what direction I want to go in especially when I am experiencing designer’s block. I would say that I used creative’s work in more of a way to study how other designers solve visual problems. However, the readings definitely did implement the difference between being inspired by someone’s work and using too much of their original ideas in your own.
I always make sure to give credit by citing the source of a designer’s work or mentioning the artist or designer’s name. For mood boards or research slides, I include the images only as references instead of presenting them as my own finished work. I make sure that the client I am presenting them too also understands that the mood board is not my personal work. Reading about the Shephard Fairy Case made me want to be even more consistent with keeping track of where my references come from because giving credit is a giant part of honest and respecting other people’s creative work.
