Week 1: Introduction and Education

Jan 29,     Discussion of course, syllabus, and texts; Orientation–OpenLab; freewriting: in-class writing: Journal 1; Student

Introductions; HW for next Wednesday: read Asimov and Scibona (OpenLab), write Journal 2: 1 typed page on which essay is your favorite

 

Week 2: Education and Intellectual Homes

Feb 5,     Due: Journal 2. Freewrite; Essay 1 explained. Discuss Asimov and Scibona; HW for next Wed: read Gardner, Wallis/Steptoe, Santiago, and Rahmani; prep for Quiz 1; write Journal 3—250 word summary of Gardner (typed)

Week 3: Home and New York

Feb 12,    No Class: Lincoln’s Birthday

 

Week 4: Sentences and Paragraphs

Feb 19,    Due: Quiz 1–in class, over readings. Due: Journal 3. Freewrite. Discuss revision and editing (quotations). In-class writing for Essay 1; HW for next wed: read Powell and Lubrano, write 2-3 page draft of Essay 1 and bring to class for peer review

 

Week 5: Drafting and Revision

Feb 26,     Due: Draft of Essay 1. Peer review and discussion of how to edit, proof, and revise. Begin discussing next essay: how we read the city and see the city; What is a photograph? Barthes on Studium and Punctum; HW: Revise Essay 1 to final turn-in date; Read Abbott, Hine, and Nooney

 

Week 6: Describing Photos

Mar 5,       Due: Final Draft of Essay 1; discuss Essay 2: Photography and Description. Discuss photos and readings. HW: read Sontag selection on OpenLab; prepare for quiz 2 and write Journal 4—250 words describing one photo from chapter 4

Week 7: Writing a Comparison Essay

Mar 12,    Due: Journal 4; Quiz 2; Freewrite. Discuss ways of seeing and narrating the city; HW: read Parlá in Dwell and write draft of Essay 2

Week 8: Writing a Comparison Essay

Mar 19,      Discuss photography, readings, and  images, Discuss key terms and organizational strategies; prepare for Midterm Exam

Week 9: Structure: Revision and Techniques of Good Writing

Mar 26,      Due: Draft of Essay 2 for Peer Review; Prepare for Library Meeting and for Midterm Exam

Week 10: Beginning the Research Essay

Apr 2,       Library Research Session—Meet in the library: Atrium Bldg 4th fl. Midterm Exam (half period = 1:15)

Week 11: Researching Guides

Apr 9,       Due: Essay 2 Final Draft; Discussion: what is good research? how to revise; HW: Read Egan and Deak and write Journal 5: 250 words on which is more difficult to understand and why: Egan or Deak

Week 12: Spring Break

Apr 16,     Spring Break: Enjoy

Week 13: Writing about NYC: The Research Paper

Apr 23,     Due: Journal 5. Freewrite; Citations and Works Cited page discussion; HW:  write Topic and Question for Essay 3 (this is Journal 6)

Week 14: Writing about NYC: The Research Paper

Apr 30,     Due: Topic and Questions (Journal 6); Discuss Portfolios and research methods; HW for May 7th: prepare portfolio, write draft of Essay 3 for peer review

Week 15: Writing about NYC: The Research Paper

May 7,      Due: Portfolios, Due: Draft of Annotated Bibliography for Peer Review; question and answer about research essay

Week 16: Putting It All Together and Final Exam

May 14,    Due: Essay 3 Draft Due for Peer Review; Final Exam review

Week 17: Final Exam

May 21,    Due: Essay 3 Final Draft; Final Exam (half period = 1:15)
