OpenLab #3: Math in your future?

Most people go to college because they are trying to build a better future for themselves.  What job do you hope to get after college?  Imagine you have completed your college degree, and your education and experience have allowed you to obtain the job that you want.

With this job in mind, consider the following list of activities.  Which of them are you most likely to be asked to do as part of your new job?  Put them in order from most likely to least likely.  If you are uncertain, make your best guess based on your current knowledge and experience.

List of activities:

  1. Use a formula (correctly identify values, substitute them into the formula, and simplify the result to get an answer).
  2. Learn to use a computer system that is unfamiliar to you, and then complete a task on that system.
  3. Brainstorm a variety of responses to a problem and decide among several solutions, each of which has plusses and minuses.
  4. Make a decision based on data (for example: a list of responses to a survey, a list of numbers, a table, or chart)
  5. Calculate the mean or standard deviation.
  6. Complete an assignment with a team of several people, including: finding a time and place to meet, dividing responsibilities, making sure everyone is completing their part, delivering the final product on time.

Assignment (due Thursday, June 27):

Respond to the above activity by leaving a comment in response to this post.  Your comment should include all of the following:

  1. What is your major?  What job are you hoping to get after graduation?
  2. From the list of activities above, give your ranking in order from “most likely to be required on your new job” to “least likely”.
  3. Discuss the first item on your list.  Do you think that this class will help prepare you to complete that task?  If so, how?  If not, what could be done in this class to help prepare you for that task?
  4. Discuss the last item on your list.  Do you think it is important to learn (even if you are not likely to use it at your job)?  Why or why not?

Extra Credit.  Comment on  someone else’s post.   Do you agree or disagree? Why?

  1. My major is Legal Studies and I am trying to complete my bachelor. I do not want to establish myself in this major. Instead I want to go to law school. After my graduation, I hope to be an attorney. If I am not successful in law school, then I will establish my bachelor. The order of the list of activities include the fallowing: 6,4,2,3,5,1. I consider number six the most significant one for me. The main role of an attorney is to make sure paralegals are doing there job in assisting the attorney for preparation in Court. Not only that, but also finding time and places to meet clients. I do not think this class will help me to complete my task. However, I believe it can educate me. I strongly believe that this class can help me to analyze problems. Being an attorney I have to look at the probability of winning or loosing a case and analyze it. Thus, it’s important to me because I do not want to loose any case in the future. I do not think number one from the list, will ever apply in my career. Formula is something that will not be use in a legal field.

    • I know you will be an amazing attorney! If you say that you need to analyze your clients and the cases and the probability of winning! Then my dear you have gained from taking the class more importantly as you spread your stats on all the cases you win you will show the bell curve who is BOSS!

  2. I am currently in the Nursing program, and, as with all students in this group, I hope to be a Registered Nurse (RN) in the very near future. The ranking of these tasks would be:

    4. Make a decision based on data.
    3. Brainstorm a variety of responses to a problem and decide among several solutions.
    6. Complete an assignment with a team of several people.
    2. Learn to use a computer system that is unfamiliar to you.
    1. Use a formula.
    5. Calculate the mean or standard deviation.

The reason I have this order is because nurses are required to make all decisions based on both subjectively and objectively collected data. They also have to learn how to use their critical thinking skills in order to come up with a solution, as well as with ways to take care of their patients.

I don’t believe I will be using the mean or standard deviation for much unless I do nursing research, which is something I don’t plan on doing for my career. I am sure it’s something I will be doing in graduate school, but we’re just listing these in the order that we’d be using them for our jobs.

  3. I am a Nursing student currently in the nursing program, and I hope to work in a hospital as an RN wen I graduate. the following is the order in which i plan to use when i graduate and get into my field,

2.Learn to use a computer system that is unfamiliar to you, and then complete a task on that system.
    6. Complete an assignment with a team of several people, including: finding a time and place to meet, dividing responsibilities, making sure everyone is completing their part, delivering the final product on time.
3.Brainstorm a variety of responses to a problem and decide among several solutions, each of which has pluses and minuses.
    1.Use a formula
4.Make a decision based on data
5.Calculate the mean or standard deviation.

The first task i chose was to be familiar with a computer software that will help me complete a task. although this class will not help me be familiar with a computer software that i don’t know how to use, I know that certain tools that helped me be successful in this class. Asking questions, remaining optimistic and being prepared are all things that I can take with me from this class that can help me prepare with that task.
The last task on my list is calculate the mean or standard deviation.
Although this is last on my list I don’t think it will be immediate in any of the task that i’ll need to complete. However, I do think that it is important to learn the mean and standard deviation if it comes to nursing research and statistical data especially with disease and illnesses. Determining the mean and the standard deviation will give researchers data for clinical purposes and to know how to approach issues that are medically related. For example knowing how many people over the age of 50 will die from cancer will help us learn more of who gets afeected and how we can tackle the problem.

  4. My Major is Hospitality Management and I am currently obtaining my Bachelors. I am honestly still debating if I want to stick with Event Management or venture off into the business aspects of management. For the activities I must say the most important is
    6) Complete an assignment with a team of several people, including: finding a time and place to meet, dividing responsibilities, making sure everyone is completing their part, delivering the final product on time.
    4) Make a decision based on data (for example: a list of responses to a survey, a list of numbers, a table, or chart)
    3) Brainstorm a variety of responses to a problem and decide among several solutions, each of which has plusses and minuses.
    2) Learn to use a computer system that is unfamiliar to you, and then complete a task on that system.
    1) Use a formula. (correctly identify values, substitute them into the formula, and simplify the result to get an answer)
    5) Calculate the mean or standard deviation.
I believe that #6 is the most important for me because in my major I am dealing with people and the most effective way to accomplish a big task is to work together. In class I notice that the group work is very effective because it allows students to discuss among their peers the problems they are having in a specific area. Not only does it help us understand what we are doing wrong but it allows us insight to prevent us from making the same errors again. I choose #1 as my least likely because although it is important and will come in handy I do not believe this will fall in my top four activities. I will be using the mean and standard deviation but I think I would be bombarded with the other five activities on the list.

  5. I am hoping to achieve my bachelor in Human Services. Human Services is a very broad field, and it is getting very difficult to focus on one area of work. Last spring i worked as an intern at NYPIRG Agency. I went on a trip with them to Albany to meet with the legislators about funding Higher Affordable Education and we also lobby for them to support the New York State Dream Act . We went to City Hall and meet with Councilmen to talk about closing Indain point nuclear power plant to avoid another possible meltdown as in Fukushima and about fracking. This was an awesome experience and if i should venger in this field my list would start with #3 Brainstorm a variety of responses to a problem and decide among several solutions, each of which has plusses and minuses. #6 Complete an assignment with a team of several people, including: finding a time and place to meet, dividing responsibilities, making sure everyone is completing their part, delivering the final product on time. #4 Make a decision based on data (for example: a list of responses to a survey, a list of numbers, a table, or chart). #2 Learn to use a computer system that is unfamiliar to you, and then complete a task on that system. #1 Use a formula (correctly identify values, substitute them into the formula, and simplify the result to get an answer). #5 Calculate the mean or standard deviation. . # 3 is the most significant because we have to have accurate information on our topics to mobilize people as well as presuade the law makers.

    • I agree with you that Human Services is a broad field. I can relate to you because I am also a Human Service major student. A student with a Human services degree can work in the school system, prison system, hospital, agencies, e.t.c. This is why I love my major because it is a broad field. It gives you a range of different workplaces.

    • i am in the healtcare industry . i know some time in future i will have to conduct a research . iwant to take andvantage of myoppunity in the class . recently i was reading a review journal . i notice some info which i was able to relate to i impress my self . i will keep on learning

  6. My major is Human Services. The job I hope to get when I graduate is hospice social worker since I am liking my experience at my internship.
    List of activities:
    2. Learn to use a computer system that is unfamiliar to you, and then complete a task on that system.
    6. Complete an assignment with a team of several people, including: finding a time and place to meet, dividing responsibilities, making sure everyone is completing their part, delivering the final product on time.
    3. Brainstorm a variety of responses to a problem and decide among several solutions, each of which has plusses and minuses.
    4. Make a decision based on data (for example: a list of responses to a survey, a list of numbers, a table, or chart)
    5. Calculate the mean or standard deviation
    1. Use a formula (correctly identify values, substitute them into the formula, and simplify the result to get an answer).

The first item on the list, which is to learn to use a computer system would be a priority because a hospice worker would have to use a network system that cannot be accessed outside of the job. Patient records and notes from all workers are in this system. If I would get hired I would first have to learn how to use it to record my notes. I believe this class is not necessarily preparing me for this task. Learning to use their computer system requires computer skills and this is not a computer class. The only exception would be if I’m a nurse and I have to read and understand the dosage of medication for patients.

The last task which is to use a formula is not necessary unless we apply in terms of the hospices mission statement. This class is not preparing me for this task because I wouldn’t have to practice using numbers in learning the mission statement.

This class is mostly teaching me self-patience with myself when learning. Patience is a difficult virtue to obtain and is always required in Human Services. Statistics is required if I’m doing research on a population. For example, if I want to have my own hospice agency, I would have to do research in which neighborhood a hospice is necessary. Statistics isn’t necessarily thrown out the window in Human Services. In all hospice agencies a QAPI (Quality Assessment Performance Improvement) is needed. A QAPI is a person or people hired to plan, coordinate, and implement quality management and quality improvement programs, conduct audits and monitor data. They have to have skills in data management, analysis and, critical thinking. This job description means having knowledge in statistics.

  7. 6,2,3,4,1,5
My major is Hospitality management, and my future job will be working in the hotel. The most likely will to be require is working together and have good time management. The least will be calculate the mean or standard deviation. In class we did some group work and do problem with someone will help me improve on working together as a team. I choses the least will be calculate the mean or standard deviation. It still important to learn it because maybe in the future you will need it and it can come in handy too.

    • Agree, it is very important to have a professional relationship with your management and at the same time have a good time.

      • I’ve always been interested in the Hospitality Major. I feel like with my skill set i would be very good in it and i agree with you. A professional relationship amoung you and your colleagues, thats what being in the hotel bsuiness is all about. A collaberation amoung the staff to get the operation up and running at the full potential.

  8. My major is Hospitality Management. I will be done with my BA degree very soon, and hope to find a job in the industry. All these activities looks useful to me, however I am not sure if I will need them in my future.
6)Complete an assignment with a team of several people, including: finding a time and place to meet, dividing responsibilities, making sure everyone is completing their part, delivering the final product on time.
    2) Learn to use a computer system that is unfamiliar to you, and then complete a task on that system.
    3) Brainstorm a variety of responses to a problem and decide among several solutions, each of which has plusses and minuses.
    1) Use a formula (correctly identifies values, substitute them into the formula, and simplify the result to get an answer).
    4) Make a decision based on data (for example: a list of responses to a survey, a list of numbers, a table, or chart)
    5) Calculate the mean or standard deviation.
I was debating between 4 and 5, because I use mean formula in my everyday life as well as I look at surveys tables’ charts).
I found number six, more important than others, even all other are important also. It is very useful tool to know how to work with team and how to achieve goals together.

    • I agree with you, in this major your main focus is the guest. Although knowing how to calculate some equations are important and will be useful I think that customer service and team work are essential aspects of this field as well.

  9. Way to go! It was a toss-up for me, because most of my experience is related to Law Enforcement. Critical and analytical thinking are important for this field. Lawyers become detectives while disecting cases. This can become an equation by itself. Save the formulas for the Forensic Teams.

My major is Hospitality & Management. I am currently working on my Bachelors Degree. The order I chose was 6; 2; 3; 1; 4; and 5. The first is of importanc, because you need to build up a strong , dedicated, and reputable team that are will to work together to build a successful company. Logical and analytical thinking will be needed ; maybe even a formula or two dealing with percentages and probability. The rest is history.

  10. My major is Hospitality Management, and by applying to this major i am looking forward to becoming a caterer/personal chef/ and a food photographer. Along with Hospitality Management, i am focusing on a few aspects of art which pertain to fashion, photography, and drawing. With all of these skills, i will definitely need math for the future, especially Hospitality which ive experienced very early in my college career. Number 6 is essential for each of these skills, as the food industry requires you to have a team to calculate, plan, and execute. Using formulas would be the least of my worries, but creating formulas for my teams processing would create a better outcome.

    • It seems really exciting what you are doing. I really think formulas and making decisions too are a big thing in your profession. You have to be creative as well as using your judgment when you are cooking. You have to know what is the exact amount of water, oil, salt or whatever when you are preparing a particular dish. Wish you good luck!

  11. My major is Nursing. As a nursing student, i am hoping to work as a nurse in future when i graduate. Working as a nurse involves several task. Almost all this list of activities are performed by the nurses. From the list to me, the most important to the least that are likely to be used in my job are as follows, 2,4,6,3,1,5. No 2 says Learn to use a computer system that is unfamiliar to you and than complete a task on that system. In nursing documentation is very important. it is one of the most important thing in the treatment of patient. Most of this documentation are done using computer system. Documentation starts from the time a patient steps feet in the hospital and any mistake made in documentation can lead to patients death. That is to show how important it is in using computer system to complete tasks in nursing. Some of the tasks that can be completed using computer system include giving medication, finding patient history, writing nursing notes, obtaining patient information, research etc. Although this class is not a computer class, it will help you to organize and carefully compute your work in the computer using several ways of data collection and documentation. Like i said before all this list of activities are used in nursing. That i said using mean and standard deviation is my list does not mean it is not important. It is as important as others only that in the area i will be working on after i graduate don’t involve more of use of mean and standard deviation. It is very important to learn because it could be used in patient satisfaction survey and other research concerning patient treatment and medication outcome. Because of this , i think it is very important to learn even though it was my least.
    .

    • I completely agree with you. In your career you will take care of many patients with different health conditions and treatment. It is impossible for you to memorize all that information. Therefore, you will need to use a computer system in order to keep track of patient information.

    • I agree with you, being a nursing major myself i also feel that all the six choices are essential in the nursing field in one way or another. I think that making decisions based off and data and learning to use a computer system work together because you have to know to use the computer system in order to keep track of a patients information. You also need to know how to analyze data in order to treat the patient properly. While the computer system will tell you everything about a patient, it will display it in the form of data so it is important to know how to use both. I think that having good skills in both of these areas is very important because you are responsible for a patients life and there is no room for error.

    • I completely agree with you because without proper documentation, several situations can occur, eg. 1. You can easily make a mistake while documenting patient’s information if you are not familiar with the computer and most importantly, you will not have any proof incase something goes wrong or something happens to your patient! Goodluck with your career 😉

  12. Im currently enrolled in the Human Services BS program. The job Im hoping to get after I finish college is either as a child protective specialist or health inspector for OSHA occupational safety & health administration.

    623145

The Most likely required task for me would be working in a team with several people : this involves getting numerous task done accurately referring to reviewing agency protocols along with developing many strategic tactics on the job to help clients.
The last task with calculating the mean and standard deviation would be least likely to get done because my job would be more into communicating with people instead of calculating math problems all the time.
But its very important to learn any topic, it can be used when ever its necessary.

    • I agree with your list, it make sense. I always like to work in groups and that’s how you get familiar everyone. Its a easy way to learn and not get frustrated cause your assigned task is equally divided. We can look up if there’s any mistake happen and fix it in group-work.

  13. My major here at CityTech is Nursing and, like everyone else in the program, I hope to become a Registered Nurse by the end of my education experience. Personally, I aspire to be involved in the operating room, or on a med-surg floor. But, at the moment, I’m a bit unsure.

From “most likely” to “least likely”:

6.Complete an assignment with a team of several people, including: finding a time and place to meet, dividing responsibilities, making sure everyone is completing their part, delivering the final product on time.
3.Brainstorm a variety of responses to a problem and decide among several solutions, each of which has plusses and minuses.
4.Make a decision based on data.
2.Learn to use a computer system that is unfamiliar to you, and then complete a task on that system.
1.Use a formula (correctly identify values, substitute them into the formula, and simplify the result to get an answer).
5.Calculate the mean or standard deviation.

I chose #6 as the most relevant to my career aspirations because in the operating room, everything needs to be meticulously observed. The role of a circulating nurse in the O.R. is to call a “STOP” before the start of surgery. The patient’s name is double checked with the records and arm band; surgical sites are checked to make sure they are, in fact, the correct site; and supplies are counted. This “STOP” is also done in the middle of surgery and at the end to make sure that the patient does not leave the O.R. with any “missing supplies” within them. The circulating nurse makes sure the rest of the team is always keeping a sterile field and is the only person in the room who can break the sterile field in case anything is needed that is not available. Personally, I feel that although this class is helpful with numbers, it won’t be able to prepare me for those “real-life” situations — especially when people’s lives are, literally, in your hands.

Calculating mean and standard deviation won’t be an everyday task as an RN. However, I do believe that, especially with more aspiring nurse researchers, that it would be helpful for those in that field.

  14. I’m an Accounting Major and i think that next to science, its one of the most math related majors in our job market. Because i was so stressed out from my accounting classes, i needed a way to9 deal with my stress in a healthy way. Doing that i discovered my love for Art and Design. It is my dream start my very own design company. Art + Accounting = Happy Jennivieve!.Although i’m not a huge math fan , i do value it in it’s entirety, i mean it is a formula for success in a sense.

1..Complete an assignment with a team of several people, including: finding a time and place to meet, dividing responsibilities, making sure everyone is completing their part, delivering the final product on time.

-This is my number one ebcause as a professional that is needed by the everyday customer, Human relations play a key role in my up commign career. Also it is a huge “Team Player” job, especially in design, there are numerious merchants that are composed together to create let’s say a couch. There needs to be a manufacturer, a fabric merchant , materials deailer and a design team.

2.Learn to use a computer system that is unfamiliar to you, and then complete a task on that system.

    – As an accountant major there is a program called Quickbooks. I can say im very happy for this program! When you start your accounting major, you need to take several classes that deal with standard GAAP accounting rules. It’s ALOT of imformation and even the tiniest error can spell disaster. This program incooperates a huge deal of informationall together.

3.Brainstorm a variety of responses to a problem and decide among several solutions, each of which has plusses and minuses.

    – I can see myself using this in a situtatiion where i’m looking for the best deal on something or how to use a certain product in several ways to sae on cost, especially when clients have a set budget.

4.Make a decision based on data (for example: a list of responses to a survey, a list of numbers, a table, or chart).

    – I can see myself using this for research purposes. For example, “how is the price of textiles doing within cotton, wool, fleece, markets”. “What is the color of a season”. I can get these and alot more information base on statistics and the tools that comes with it.

  15. My mayor is radiology. After graduation I want to be a Computer tomography tech. List of activities from most likely to least likely to be required in my new job: 2, 6, 3, 1, 4, 5,. I chose learn to use a computer system that is unfamiliar to you, and then complete a task on that system as the most likely to be required in my job because CT scans are taken using a specific computer system. This computer system is not used by any other career besides radiology. To obtain a very good projection of the body, it is necessary to select specific combination factors that can be only achieved by using this computer system. This class is helping me in every one of the numbers that I mentioned above; from how to use my calculator to teamwork. For the least likely I chose calculate the mean and standard deviation. Even though I do not think I will use it, it is very good to know because it will be very helpful in case you need to do a researcher.

  16. My major is Nursing. I am currently a Registered Nurse and trying to finish my BSN. I am working part time as a visiting nurse, but I am hoping to work in hospital. The ranking of these tasks would be:

4.Make a decision based on data
3.Brainstorm a variety of responses to a problem and decide among several solutions, each of which has plusses and minuses.
1.Use a formula (correctly identify values, substitute them into the formula, and simplify the result to get an answer).
2.Learn to use a computer system that is unfamiliar to you, and then complete a task on that system.
6.Complete an assignment with a team of several people, including: finding a time and place to meet, dividing responsibilities, making sure everyone is completing their part, delivering the final product on time.
5.Calculate the mean or standard deviation.

My reason why I chose #4 first is because as a Nurse, you want to make sure that you think critically first before making decisions on how to take care of the patient assigned to you. You want to provide the best care as much as possible. Mistakes are very easy to make and you do not want to be in a situation regretting or hoping you can turn back time.

I chose #5 last because I do not see any use of this in my career at this moment. The fact that finding standard deviation and mean annoys me very much (no offense Professor Reitz).

Extra Credit. Comment on someone else’s post. Do you agree or disagree? Why?

  17. My Major is hospitality management, currently obtaining my Bachelor’s degree. I am still undecided if I would like to go into hotel management or restaurant management. In the hospitality industry, every day is a challenge, like math; pay close attention to your daily activities at your workplace. You have to deal with guests, everyday. You need to complete an assignment with the team. Get to know your team. Share your responsibilities. Teamwork is a must, in order for your workplace to excel. Learn to use the computer system that is unfamiliar to you, and then complete a task on that system. Brainstorm a variety of responses to a problem and decide among several solutions. Sales and profits in the hospitality management can be a challenge. So a formula must be used. Make a decision based on the data or results obtained from the results, either the binomial formula, mean formula, or frequency data table; which ever fits your best.

  18. My major is Human Services. The job I am hoping to get after graduation is a Guidance Counselor. Personally, I would love to work with High School students. I want to be able to give the students the best preparation for life after high school. I would enrolled them in the classes that would be beneficial for the major they intend on studying in college.
2.Learn to use a computer system that is unfamiliar to you, and then complete a task on that system.

4.Make a decision based on data (for example: a list of responses to a survey, a list of numbers, a table, or chart).

3.Brainstorm a variety of responses to a problem and decide among several solutions, each of which has plusses and minuses.

6.Complete an assignment with a team of several people, including: finding a time and place to meet, dividing responsibilities, making sure everyone is completing their part, delivering the final product on time.

5.Calculate the mean or standard deviation.

1.Use a formula (correctly identify values, substitute them into the formula, and simplify the result to get an answer).

This class will help me with the first item on my list by checking over the data that I put into the computer because I tend to make mistakes. The webwork helps because it is a new system I had to work with and I know there will be different data I will have to get use to working with as a guidance counselor. The practice of calculating data and finding out the correct results is also helpful for being a guidance counselor.

I think it is important to learn the last item on my list because there may be a new technique in which I may need to use a formula throughout my counseling experience.

  19. My major at City Tech is nursing and when I graduate from college I hope to work as a Registered Nurse in a hospital. The ranking of activities from most likely to be required in my new job to least likely are as followed: 4,3,2,6,1,5. The first item on my life is “make a decision based on data (for example: a list of responses to a survey, a list of numbers, a table or chart.” I believe that making decisions based off data is very important in the nursing profession because while taking care of a patient, a nurse is consistently referring a patient’s medical history which is stored as data. A nurse must be able to look at a patients file and interpret the data presented. Based on that data, a nurse must be able to make decisions on how to treat the patient or what medication to give them. Improper interoperation of data can have serious consequences on a patient’s health. I believe that this Statistics course is helping me prepare for the completion of this task because it has taught me how to set up data and how to read/interpret it. I also think that knowing how to properly read and interpret data is very important on an everyday basis because we are always interacting with some sort of it. The last item on my list was “Calculate the mean or standard deviation”. I don’t think I will be using mean or standard deviation while working as a nurse immediately. I think that it is something worth knowing and it is something that will become helpful in graduate school or while doing nursing research.

  20. My major was liberal arts and science, i just switched to accounting. I’m hoping to get a job in a bank, company or anything good that hires me. I need to finish my bachelor to get a good job in any field. MY “most likely to be required on my new job” to “least likely” order:

    6. Complete an assignment with a team of several people, including: finding a time and place to meet, dividing responsibilities, making sure everyone is completing their part, delivering the final product on time.
    3. Brainstorm a variety of responses to a problem and decide among several solutions, each of which has pluses and minuses.
    4. Make a decision based on data (for example: a list of responses to a survey, a list of numbers, a table, or chart)
    5. Calculate the mean or standard deviation.
    1. Use a formula (correctly identify values, substitute them into the formula, and simplify the result to get an answer).
    2. Learn to use a computer system that is unfamiliar to you, and then complete a task on that system.

    6. The first item of my list is about group work. In our statistic class we assigned in different groups to let each other know and work based on the problem, so its matching my order. Its very important in group-works to discuss any problem together and make decision. This class preparing us for any tasks similar like this.
    2. Using computer is very important in your job according to any accounting major but i made it “least likely” because its very important to know your skills before you use anything. Its better to know how to solve any problem without using computer, if you make any mistake you always can comeback and check what did u do wrong?

  21. I am changing careers and currently obtaining prerequisites needed to applyfor a graduate program in occupational therapy. This class is required for every OT program applicant because it’s needed to conduct research. Anywho, in order of most likely to least likely:
    3. Brainstorm-most likely
    4. Make a decision based on data-most likely
    6. Complete assignment with team of people-most likely
    2. Learn a computer system-most likely
    1. Use a formula-least likely
    5. Calculate a mean-least likely
Brainstorming is important to learn because there are numerous approaches and techniques to address specific issues clients have to enable them to become functional again in their lives.

Calculating a mean isn’t important to me currently, but in graduate school doing my research it will be helpful.

  22. My major is Hospitality management pastry chef. After I graduate I plan on getting a jo at a well known bakery as a pastry cook and then work my way up learning as much as I can before opening up my own bakery. Math is very useful in every career. But the level of importance varies.
    My own list would be:6, 1, 4, 2, 3, 5
Working together with team members to help out with the task at hand, is something most likely I will be doing on a daily basis.
Calculate a mean or standard deviation is least likely. I dont see that occurring in my field.

  23. 3.Brainstorm a variety of responses to a problem and decide among several solutions, each of which has plusses and minuses.
4.Make a decision based on data (for example: a list of responses to a survey, a list of numbers, a table, or chart)
6.Complete an assignment with a team of several people, including: finding a time and place to meet, dividing responsibilities, making sure everyone is completing their part, delivering the final product on time
1.Use a formula (correctly identify values, substitute them into the formula, and simplify the result to get an answer).
2.Learn to use a computer system that is unfamiliar to you, and then complete a task on that system
5.Calculate the mean or standard deviation.

Currently I am working on my Bachelor Degree with a focus on legal studies. After graduation I plan on networking and refreshing relationships with non for profit organizations. Financially I aim to secure a position working in the courts for Kings County. I also plan on furthering my career by obtaining my Masters in Criminal Phycology. Ten year goal is to graduate from Law School however financially I do not know if that would ever be possible.
From the list I think that I would more often use #3 BRAINSTORM – One must always outweigh the negative and the positive in any situation and in connection with clients that is more than essential. My least needed category on the list would be applying standard deviation outright. I do see the relevance and how it is useful for surveys I just can not see the connection right now.
I have to say surprisingly that the class did help me prepare for the future and even in regards to Law. For example the Level of relevance, standard of proof “99% beyond a reasonable doubt”, or by a “preponderance of evidence” and the stats that are accumulated by repeated offenders those terms now have substance and I can see how.
I would like to use more real life stats in class like from the city police precincts etc. But other wise given that we are totally pressed for time I think that the knowledge and examples were great.
Away from applying the class to my intended major I think that the formulas and interpretations are useful and can be used when looking for restaurant’s, doctors neighborhoods etc.
It is a part of our everyday lives.
Thank you Professor Reitz for sticking to the meat and potatoes of statistics.

  24. My major is nursing, but I already got my AAS in nursing in a different school, so I am here to complete my BSN. I am currently working as a Registered Nurse, but by having my BSN, I will have more chance to get the job that I really want since most of the reputable Hospitals require a Bachelor in Nursing. In my field, nurses make decisions all the time based on data or assessment they do; therefore, it is very important to know how to do it. The second most Important thing is being able to work as a team very efficiently and get the job done. Thirdly, it is very imperative to know how to use a computer because in the nursing field, we do lots of documentation, look at the lab values, communicate with the doctors, and all of that by using a computer. Furthermore, this class will help me prepare for the task ahead because I have to prioritize a lot of time between doing the homework online or prepare the answer sheet, so I can get ready for the exam. So far, the decision that I have made have worked wonderfully. The last item in my list is using a formula. It is important to learn it because nurses do use formulas in order to calculate people’ s weight and determine the dose of meds that they should give an infant or an adult. Therefore, I will say that everything in the list is important for nurses!
