WeBWork #1: UPDATE

This is just a quick update regarding problem #8, since it includes something you have not yet seen:

When a stem-and-leaf diagram contains TWO ROWS for each stem (for example, “18” appears at the start of the first and also the second row), the convention is to split up the leaves as follows:

  • leaves 0, 1, 2, 3 and 4 go in the first row
  • leaves 5, 6, 7, 8 and 9 go in the second row

If you have any questions about this please send me an email or leave a comment below.

Best of luck!

Mr. Reitz

  1. Professor Reitz,

I am still having a hard time with this problem. I don’t quite understand what you mean by splitting the leaves. The first two rows already say 16 and 16, so I cannot split them into 1 and 6

    • Hi Adriana,
I’ll do an example. If we take a number from the data, for example:
      163
we split it into to parts, 16 (the stem) and 3 (the leaf). In the table, the stem 16 appears in the first two rows. We have to figure out where to put the 3 — in the first row, or the second row. The rule is, when you have two rows with the same stem (in this case two rows with 16), you put leaves of 0, 1, 2, 3 or 4 in the first row, and leaves of 5, 6, 7, 8 or 9 in the second row. In the case of the example, 163, we would put the 3 in the first row.

Does this help? Let me know if you’re still having trouble.
      Regards,
      Mr. Reitz

      • i tried it, and the program still says that at least one of the answers are not correct.

maybe i can email the entire Math Assignment to your cuny email and you can check for the errors that affect the online program.

and there are some tips (“List of Functions”) for Math problems on the right side of the Web-Work assignments but i am not sure if they have any tips for stem and leaf and leaf repetitions.

    • i have slightly the same problem…..since the first row of any stem will have numbers up to 4 and the second row of the same stem will have numbers from 5 to 9…………the program still will not respond with 100% accuracy and some of the leaves repeat also for some of the stems.

so it becomes a bit tricky…

  3. THANKS ALOT …..IT WORKED
I JUST NEEDED A BIT OF PATIENCE….i was wasn’t taking into account if i included all the numbers…lolz……

    Thanks again…..^_^!!
