My Infinity – Anthony Valdez

As a child growing up I would always find myself asking questions out of curiosity. I remember playing in the park when I was younger and one of my older childhood friends would throw the ball up so high that it took a few seconds for the ball to come down. It was at that point that I introduced myself to the concept of infinity. I began to think how far can that ball really go, or does it go on forever? I was about 11 at the time and I was always curious about how things work and why things are the way they are. The thought of flying towards the sky and never reaching an end point was mind boggling at the time, but it amazed me that something could go on forever and never end.

The best way I can visualize this is by thinking of a documentary I saw on “Netflix” on how the universe works. Physicist Stephen Hawkins explains his theory on the big bang and how it all started. Basically he states that the universe is expanding at a certain rate non-stop. In a way it is similar to infinity in mathematics because the expansion is never ending, the same way the number infinity is really a number that does not have an end.

Hi Anthony – great post! I think looking up at the sky is one the great (and easy) ways we have of “seeing” infinity. Thanks also for including the link (tip: if you want, you can “embed” the clip in your post, so there is no need to click on the link — to do this, go to the YouTube video, find the button marked “Share” under the video, click it and copy the URL there. Then paste this URL on a separate line in your post — the video should appear there after you save your changes and view the result.).

Regarding the photos (which are beautiful, by the way) — could you confirm that you took them? Or if you did not, please take a photo (it could be similar) and add it to your post.

    Thanks,
    Mr. Reitz
