For every technological advantage, there is a corresponding technological disadvantage. 2.Which people and which groups will be favored by a new technology. This is never equal and never democratic. The Entertainment value of electracy is a challenge to knowlege production of literacy in school. Postman's points about controlling, tracking, and surveillance are as true as ever. 3. each technology expresses a value that is emphasized through that technology. The medium is the message. The message is forgettable. The medium is what sticks. What is important is not what I say to you on the phone. What is important is the phone. The phone is the message that changes things. The song is not the the thing but the turntalbe. How has spotify changed this? What is the new value/message by streaming music services that displaced the old ways of listeng to music through "hard" media? 4. Not additive, ecological. 5. Technology appears to be inevitable, that it would always have been this way. Begin discussion of epistemology and apparatus theory. Groups: Answer the question: Why do we go to school? Come up with as many possible answers as possible. To increase our final vocabulary, to increase our circumference. What are the things that limit our final vocabulary? Let's put these into categoryies. 1. Individual limitations, how to we limit ourselves? 2. Situational, how do the people around us or our background limit us? 3. Institutional, what institutional barriers stand in our way? 4. Social Cultural, how does the culture itself limit us? 5. Apparatus, let's get into this.
