Education was always shown as something that should always be prioritized, growing up in a Mexican household where you were bound to be something in life, especially being a female your family’s expectations were for you to be successful in school and being an insane clean freak for some reason. I was never really on board with my family’s expectations of me, not because i didn’t like school and didn’t want a good career but because the expectations they had for me wasn’t what I wanted. It was somehow a dream that they wanted for themselves but since they couldn’t achieve it they put that on me to accomplish. I was getting to a point where I wasn’t sure what I wanted to be in life, at times i’d doubt myself and there’d be a moment where I wouldn’t believe in myself but when you have your own family starts doubting you, your own mind tends to shift on its own and sets you to a type of mindset to become a better version of yourself no matter what. You want to be able to thrive on your own and prove everyone wrong, you come to realize and truly believe that your education is the most valuable thing and you slowly start to push yourself to do better and pursue what you want to achieve as a life goal.

Where I’m from I wake up to the smell of pan dulce y chocolate. That warm smell that always makes me feel at home. Where I’m from the temperature determines how the day will go. The hotter the weather the hotter the block is. Where I’m from every day is a party outside. Where people play loud music until 4am. Where I’m from in Staten island making out the hood is the goal. That sadly not everyone prevails in. Where I’m from you see people working hard to make ends meet. The struggle of having two jobs and not being able to have enough time for anything else but bills. Where I’m from seeing someone getting shot across the street from your house is common. Hearing a mother, father, sibling, or spouse cry outside your window never becomes easier. Where I’m from the system failing you is expected. Where I’m from is not somewhere I want to raise my children. It’s a place I hope to make it out of soon enough.
I believe that Toni Morrison in her article “The Reader as Artist” is describing how writing and reading is more than just that but a form of art. The way readers read is based off the way the author is drawing the picture for our minds. We can read just word or we can live through the author. For example, instead of reading about a woman in a story, you can picture this woman how you believe she is suppose to be in real life. Can you relate to the characters? do it teach a lesson? based off how the author starts their stories. She also talks about how anyone can read, but going to school they teach you what it is to really read. Learn to appericate the art of it.
