Q1: There is a lot of value when you create layers in Illustrator. Having layers in your file helps you keep any artwork you complete more organized. Having layers can also give you the ability to move things, hide, and lock objects so your work can not be distorted or combined. Sometimes working on the same layer can be unforgiving. When you work on an object over and over sometimes you lose its original form which is why it’s better to duplicate artwork in another layer to see your progression. Having addtional layers also can be useful becuase they can work as guides. When I create a logo or an illustrartion I defintly use layers. One layer usually is the outline and the second layer is the fill. Ultimately, you can combine the layers too by grouping but still have them in their own layer.

Q2: To create close triangles you would need to use the pen tool. The pen tool is located in the tool box located on the right hand side of the document. Hovering over the tool box will identify which is the pen tool. Once you click on the pen tool, find a section on the photography you would like to start. To make the closed triangle shape you must click to start a point then another and another until you have created a traingle. It is important that you close the triangle. So when you create the triangle make sure you conect the last point to the first one. If the stroke of the pen tool is too thick you can reduce the stroke in the apperance section.

Hi, Mike. Great response to your first question, I completely agree with your assessment of the importance of layers in Illustrator. It does help you to organize your work. It’s also very useful because it can help you save time when working on a project. You can plan your layers in any way you want, and you’ll always know where everything is.

Q1: The value of creating layers in Illustrator is to keep your work organized. You can put anything on any layer, and you can make as many layers as you need with the push of a button. The layer panels allow you to lock layers, as well as turn them on or off. Locking layers makes whatever is on them uneditable, until that layer is unlocked. Turning the visibility off for that layer makes whatever is on it invisible, until the visibility is turned back on. Having the ability to lock layers helps keep what needs to be left alone untouched, and these controls can easily help preview and change your work in different ways.

Q2: You close triangle shapes in the self-portrait by clicking on the first point you made with the pen tool. The pen tool’s cursor will change to have a small circle next to it, indicating that your next click will close the shape you are currently working on. To make another separate shape on an anchor point of a shape while it is selected, you must hold shift before clicking on that point. If you do not hold shift, the pen tool’s cursor will have a small minus next to it, and will delete the next anchor point you click.
