Welcome!

Welcome to my professional ePortfolio. This site reflects some of my schoolwork  at New York City College of Technology, as well as my previous experiences and achievements. Here you can find a little bit about my background, my personal philosophy of nursing and my resume.

I came to United States eight years ago barely speaking any English and now I’m proud to be a Registered Nurse in the State of New York. I can’t say that I always wanted to be a nurse; in fact I’ve spent 5 years after high school thinking what career is right for me. Back in my country I went to a pedagogical university for two years studying French and Italian. Two years after I came to the U. S., I made the decision to go back to college but I was still undecided of what I wanted to do. In 2009 I had my first child and the excitement quickly turned into tears and anxiety. He had to be taken into the Neonatal Intensive Care Unitbecause he was desaturating for an unknown reason. The next two weeks were a roller coaster with countless tests and blood draws. As a new mom this was the hardest time of my life, it was confusing and scary. Two weeks later we were able to take him home without ever knowing what was the reason. Now he is a healthy five-year-old but that experience changed my life forever. I don’t remember the doctors who treated him because I’ve rarely seen them around, but I still remember the nurses that took care of him. They were there for my son and for me. They were caring and knowledgeable and made my experience easier. That was my inspiration to become a nurse. It took me 3,5 years to get my degree, but I loved nursing school a lot. It was hard but it was very interesting to me, I liked nursing and science classes. I liked to learn about the human body, about diseases, treatments and the nursing job. Through my clinicals I loved nursing even more, I loved taking care of people, being part of the health care team and seeing improvements in patients. I can’t say that it was easy but it was very pleasant and rewarding for me. I graduated in 2013 from Borough of Manhattan Community College with honors and with two graduation awards because I loved what I was doing and I was committed to it.

After graduation I had my work permit for one year and as soon as I received my RN license, I started to work as a home visiting nurse. I worked as a visiting nurse for eleven months and then I started the Bachelor program full time here at City Tech. I’m proud to be a Registered Nurse in the State of New York and would like to continue my education and increase my knowledge. I’m a very dynamic person, I like to be challenged, to advance and improve in everything I do. I think that the nursing is the best fit for me because it’s dynamic, it requires continuous education, and it’s very interactional. I believe that nursing has many opportunities for career and self-growth. I have a few areas of interest in nursing, such as women’s health, pediatric and community heath nursing. For future, I’m thinking of getting my Masters degree in community health and I’m hoping to find an opportunity to work in the areas I’m interested in. I think that maternal-child health is very important for our society and communities. Unfortunately infant mortality rates are still higher in the United States than in other developed countries, so there is an obvious need of prenatal care and education, as well as infant care and safety. I think that community nurses play an important role in bringing change, developing policies and programs to address public heath issues and improve the overall health of the community. I’m looking forward to graduate in May 2016 and to continue my journey to achieve my professional goals.
