This special topics course offers an interdisciplinary approach to investigating our built environment using a case study focused on a specific place each semester. This course combines physical examination with information research and data collection using methodologies developed in multiple disciplines. Students from a variety of departments engage in on-site exploration and in-depth research of a location in New York City.

In order to become innovative and daring technological leaders in your chosen fields, it is imperative each of you develop a broad understanding of the economic, social, and cultural forces shaping emerging technologies over and beyond the basic mechanics of how these technologies work. Without this foundation, narrow technical background may result skill sets that easily become out of date. The accelerated pace of change merits facility with discussions of the historical, social and cultural contexts of technological evolution. This foundation course will prepare you for research in the emerging technologies of your chosen fields by supplying the necessary background theory, context and methodology. This foundation course will prepare you for research in the emerging technologies of you chosen fields by supplying the necessary background theory, context and methodology. Since the course does not require particular technological skills and experience, students of diverse technological programs will be able to take part in it.

MTEC2250 Tangible Media Skills

MTEC2250 Tangible Media Skills

In this course students will spend the semester designing and building a prototype. The class is broken up to 3 sections: 3D Design and Production, Electronics, and PCB design. In the 3D Design section, students will be introduced to fabrication and modeling using 123D Design and Inkscape. They will fabricate their designs using laser cutters and 3D Printers. In the next section, we will be using PIC microcontroller to add interaction to our prototypes. Finally, we will transfer our circuits from our breadboard to a PCB. We will use the EagleCAM software to design our board, which we will then get printed. At the end of the semester students will have produce a full working prototype with an enclosure, functioning electronics, and assembled PCB board.

My Projects

Farragut Housing

Farragut Housing

Learning Places students take on an in-depth look of the Farragut Housing, located in Vinegar Hill, Brooklyn.

Literograph

Literograph

Literograph is a web app that work as a tool for writers to compose richer narratives. It allows writers to insert medias (sound, image and video) with text into specific points in a map associated with the narrative. The reader then can choose points on the map and access punctual parts of the plot. The utter expectation is that by using maps as the interface the reading experience will be deconstructed from chronological to cartographical.
