English 2420 combines analysis of science fiction as literature with consideration of the questions science and technology raise about past, present, and future societies. In class discussions and essays, students will focus on the basic elements of literary analysis, the historical development of the science fiction genre, and the thematic concerns of each assigned text. Class discussions will address issues of form and will delve into the cultural contexts that have helped shaped some of the core tropes of the genre, such as artificial intelligence and human/machine interactions, the exploration of space and time, and the possibility of extraterrestrial life. Introduces building web pages dynamically, organizing projects into web applications, and deploying these applications using a web server. Hands-on laboratory exercises reinforce the material presented in the lectures and enable students to develop related programming skills.

Through eight units of study, we will create various deliverables (business letters, memos, minutes, process papers, and reports) and think through how best to harness the power of word choice, tone, approach, revision, and follow-through. • unit 1: annotation, MLA citation, best practices • unit 2: organization • unit 3: revision • unit 4: audience and purpose • unit 5: process project • unit 6: reports • unit 7: meetings and collaboration • unit 8: reflection and presentation Units 2-4 and 6-7 will require the preparation of short response papers that reflect an understanding of one or more of the deliverables named above. Unit 5 will culminate in the creation of a process project, and unit 8 will result in self-reflection and a brief presentation.

This course will have students use electronic media such as internet, presentation, and graphics programs to communicate technical and scientific information to a variety of audiences via written and oral presentations. Students will also analyze readings in science and technology, study technical writing models, and practice collaborative research and presentation. Building on previous writing courses, this course will reinforce clarity of thinking and expression in effective and correct English.
