Assignment 14 – Research Paper

Last week, when I went through advanced internet searching, it helped me a lot in preparing bibliography for my research paper. I was looking all over the place, without being focused and I was unable to find relevant information for my research topic, which was pretty frustrating. Now, I am relieved and I have adequate information for my project. Searching CUNY library database is also very helpful and I have scholarly journals for my project also. I have learned how to search deeply, precisely, and without spending so much time wandering on the web. I shall definitely utilize the skills that I have learned in this class, especially, in my coming writing intensive courses where I have to write research papers.

My strategy for my first draft research paper is to use my outline as a guide to how I will formulate my paragraphs and main points with proof from the research I conducted. I am a bit nervous about my form of attack on this paper. However, this has worked for me in my past and I have been successful in past research papers. Nevertheless, my research has taken me to a slightly different direction to my original proposal; I have found information that correlates with one another other and I feel comfortable with my research I just have to change my mind frame from what I original wanted. I am not completely off, but my search was narrowed down specifically.

Assignment 13 – Research Journal

Writing first draft is going to be fun. The last time, I wrote a research paper was spring 2007. I have not written a research paper since then and that’s why it’s going to be fun. The reading assignments given to us, about the evaluation of information from web, will help me a lot in putting the research paper together. The readings are very informative and definitely I shall use them in my research paper. The strategy is to use focused information and detailed analysis of the data from reliable sources. I have some questions related to the research paper and I shall be in need of some guidance. But, that’s for later; right now, I am just focusing on the outline of the research paper and some internet sources for my research paper. The hardest thing is to find detailed information and internet sources.

So far the annotated bibliography was the toughest, it took me quite some time to find some relevant articles about my topic and it was quite a lot of writing. I’m pretty sure it’s nothing compared to the writing of the first draft. I haven’t written many research papers before so I don’t really have a lot of strategies. I do know that if I want my draft to be good, I need to find some more sources which are focused on my topic. It was kinda hard to find some very specific sources, most of the sources were very broad. I would like to know where I could find some more specific sources.

Advanced Research Strategies

Well I tried using Google Scholar and it did give me some good info about my research topic. Google Scholar is a good resource to find information on certain topics because it does give you good articles that we can use. Some articles can be reliable and some can just give you too much information that you don’t really need. So like in Badke’s readings we just have to narrow down the topic and it will for sure give good information in any resource site we look at. I have found several articles that I can use for my research and it gives me the info I need. I found similar articles that I had already research on other databases. This tells us that no matter what resource or search engine we use we will find similar articles in any of those engines being used.

Research Proposal

I’ve encountered a few difficulties while trying to come up with my research proposal. The first difficulty was trying to focus on something relevant and to try to elaborate the topic clear enough. As the topic which I’ve chosen is like there are so many things to talk about it was hard to stay on track. I did not use any specific strategies. I just did some research on my topic to see if I would be able to write about 5-8 pages on it. One question I have is how many many idea or points should we have and how much to write on each?

Data as a goal and data as a tool. Two very interesting ways to look at the information available on a certain topic. The part that is comedic of Badke is how professors must go through the dread of reading a simple report on the topic without the writer raising any attention getting questions or points of view. Using acquired data on a topic to form an in depth analysis on an issue sounds a lot more entertaining to read AND write. Maybe all professors should require this chapter as part of a class’s syllabus, that way those once dreaded papers can actually become an intellectual gold mine.

Response to The Information Fog

While reading the two chapters in Research Strategies I couln’t help but relate to a lot of the points Badke made about how we use technology today to get information. I found myself saying “wow that’s so true” on more than one occasion, specifically relating to finding good reliable sources on the web. Like Badke said “not all information is equal.” Living in the information age it can seem overwhelming the amount of information we have at our disposal. All that is needed on our part is a simple Google search. Just google “egg” and you will get close to 300 million results as opposed to “omelette recipe” which yields just under 2 million results. Sometimes it’s hard to weed through the information to find a real credible source and even harder to find an unbiased one at that. I really liked how Badke described the primary and secondary sources of information. I know when I do research, whether for school papers or out of sheer curiosity to learn more about a subject, I never stopped to think if the information I was reading was the author’s own as opposed to someone’s assessment of the author’s information. I feel after reading these two chapters I have a better knowledge and understanding of how to effectively use different types of research sources, whether books or the web, to write better research papers or even just find a good omelette recipe. If anybody wants to get started on their search for information then Badke’s book will point you in the right direction.
