Journal Entry 7 Role Model

In all my time here I’ve really come to understand the value of role models and how they play a very important part in the development of young professionals. At Women’ s Press Collective I’ve found my sense of a role model in Lisa Daniels, the head coordinator of Women’s Press Collective. When I was first hired I asked her what gained her interest in pursing the field of journalism and News Press. She explained to me how during her up bringing she was exposed to the many injustices that people in poverty suffered and dedicated her life to addressing these issues by any means possible. What impressed me most is that she learned to work the large printing machines used for our monthly publications. She was also humble and sincere in her view points. Another great quality she displayed, was her ability to get everyone highly motivated for our next project it really brought up the whole moral of the work place. I learned also the value of organizing and laying out early principles to effectively create plans and events to bring awareness while being involved with the local communities. Being not only a great role model to me but as well as to the borough of Brooklyn, and by giving it a voice with her monthly publications.

Journal Entry 6 Lesson self evaluation

After nearly two months of interning at Women’s Press Collective, I feel that the experience has really advanced my skills when assigned to work with a parter. Having someone to bounce ideas off of really helps progress the concept quickly and more efficiently. Each one can point out thing the other might have over looked. My overall opinion with my performance here at WPC is one that I’m content with. I really felt content after i created the three advertisements for the International Women’s Day, feeling profound after I nailed the look and style I sought out to produce. I really feel like I’m finally acquiring a sense of style with my work that really makes my work that much more original while having a feeling of a energy and aesthetic.  With my time here at WPC I really enjoyed every opportunity they give to produce content and especially when its work that comes from a sense of unrestricted guidelines, this really helps me process great work.

Journal Entry 5 Collaboration Projects

During my time at my internship I have had two major projects in which I was to be paired up with another partner. The first one being the front cover of the winter 2017 issue of Collective Endeavors, also the pamphlet that me and Nikole made for WPC’s International Women’s Day event. For the front cover of Collective endeavors my partner who is named Nicole with a c, created a front cover with pictures taken of our staff and our equipment, that featured the inner mechanics of the large printing press. It was easy to with Nicole she had a real talent for communicating her concepts as well as understanding my insight and style I was trying to express for the front cover. We ended up using photoshop and illustrator to complete the design. The second time I was paired up was with fellow classmate and intern Nikole, we were instructed to create the pamphlet for the second annual International Women’s Day Event. Nikole was really kind to work with differed from the other Nicole. With Nikole her sense of approach towards the project was that she would listen first and them provide on insight to further improve some of the designs I was working on. Nikole also helped me further understand the colors she picked for the font of the pamphlet as well as her use in type.

Journal Entry 4 Tasks and Daily Part 4 final

After I completed the front cover of the international women’s day pamphlet. Lisa informed us of some local donations we received and had offered for us to feature them on the back of the pamphlet. We had full range to create advertisements for 3 local clients. Again I was paired up with Nikole for complete this project. Me and Nikole both agreed on taking a retro look to each advertisement. In photoshop we created patterned and selected the color tones for each one. In the end we created simple yet effective ads with a retro twist and feel to them, since we have full range on this pamphlet project we had the opportunity to use colors. And I felt that we did a good job of using them. I really enjoyed this project a lot because I able to add something really original, while also adding a very specific yet unique style to them.

Journal Entry 4 Tasks and Daily Part 3

March was a busy month Women’s press Collective is launching a huge event for this years 2nd annual International Women’s Day Celebration. Where WPC will host music, art and important guest speakers. All addressing the advance of women and the awareness of the struggle women face each day. It is all going to hosted by a local church that will provide to WPC to use. For this event i was instructed to create the pamphlet for the event.  Again I was paired up with someone. This time by another fellow intern from my internship class, her name is Nikole. She is a current student of the same internship course . We both began to work together to create the front image of the cover, I suggested a vintage style photo of women linking arms in solidarity to protest the unjust against them. What caught my attention of this image was a photo of immigrant workers from the late 1910’s. Me an Nikole both decided to add film grain and color distortion to create an hint of an old film effect in the end Lisa loved it. It is my best piece that I have created for them.

Journal Entry 4 Tasks and Daily Part 2

I had a my first big project presented to me. Which was to create the cover for our latest publication of Collective Endeavor. I was extremely excited to under take such a task. It was also my first project where I would have to work with another volunteer at WPC. She is an alumni from City Tech. Her name is Nicole, me and her immediately began to create concepts right after Lisa gave us a debrief of what theme it should con vague. After some brain storming we both agreed on the topic of linking man and machine and that warm of these machines come from people reacting with it and the involvement of fellow co workers gave off a vibe of cooperation. In the end we created a wonderful cover that made Lisa proud, this project really showed of my skills with creating powerful concepts.

Journal Entry 4 Tasks and Daily Part 1

On a typical day I am seated by the computer ready to create or design some flyer or advertisement for a local business that has donated to us an we repay them by featuring and advertisement on our monthly issue. But someday like today are days in which we update our files on are local members. We update address names and if we sent them an issue of our lately Collective Endeavor publication. This would seem quite normal, but the one thing that keeps its files up to dates is not its computers but its staff who have to file sort and write down its new information on its client on paper. Which is all sorted in file cabinets containing every subscriber to its publication. I really respect this method and wish more organizations still practiced this way of information gathering.

Journal Entry 3 The Work Place & WPC co-workers

Upon my first couple of weeks of interning at WPC I met a large array of volunteers who have been invited with Women’s Press Collective since the 90s. The volunteers hear at the press are extremely kind people. We all discuss some of the important issues we aim to tackle and address in your next publication. But not only are they great social workers, they also have great conversations of humorous topics, while also being extremely insightful. But not only are their just volunteers at WPC I also have fellow interns from NYC College of Technology with me, who are also taking this internship course. Overall the social environment is a great one, with plenty of room to ask questions and grow in skill sets. It really lets the volunteers express themselves this is reflected on our dress code which is a relax one, we are able to dress in casual attire. The surrounding area is an industrial one, plenty of auto repair shops and warehouses but I like this, because it really reflects surrounding community, which is largely blue collar workers. Something our monthly publication often covers. It is all about the workers of this great city  and giving back.

Journal Entry 2 The Foundation and Entry

When I first found out about women’ s press collective I read a sheet describing what exactly they were looking for in an intern. What really sparked my interest was the position being involved in journalism. I alway had an interest in this field and when the opportunity arrived i jumped at it. I was given a number to call, and the person I was told to speak with is a women by the name of Lisa Daniels. I immediately called her the following morning and she was extremely soft spoken and kind. We scheduled and meeting for my orientation where I was shown the on site equipment and staff. I explained to her my skill sets in Photoshop & Indesign. The first task i was given was to correct and photo edit all of the images in the 2017 issue of collective endeavors which is their monthly magazine that highlights social optical topics in local communities and across. My task in detail is to take 15 images and edit them. During my interview I was asked how much do I know about local community events, I respond “I don’t know to many”, to which they asked me if i would care to learn and discover more about it. I respond with “I care to learn more than just skills, With these events I feel like I’m also discovering new different perspectives.” After this interview we shortly began the photo editing on Collective Endeavors.

Journal Entry 1: Women’s Press Collective

My name is Kevin Jimenez. Im a senior at the NYC college of technology. During my final semester i have gotten an internship at Women’s press collective. It is an independent local community news press. First established in 1986 they fight to bring the attention to issues involving New York City local neighborhoods. The head coordinator of the office is Lisa Daniels, since Women’s Press is a non-profit organization most of its volunteers are from all parts of the city including some volunteers and supporters from across the country. I have been assigned to create designs for them, and was given an orientation of its office staff and equipment. Including their many large printing machines use for publication. The point that attracted me to them is the fact that they do not use computers to spread their word, it all done through paper work and through their publications.
