Happy Home Made Holidays!

keep-calm-and-diy--63

The holidays are a greatest time of year, and also the greatest time of the year to be broke. Between all the holiday spending, gift shopping, home décor and grocery shopping, the holiday budget can go out the window. The holidays are a great time to get your creative juices flowing with some DIY- Do It Yourself projects and there are plenty of great ideas that can be simple, affordable and look amazing.

Do It Yourself Holiday Table Setting

The one thing that I absolutely love about DIY projects, especially center piece projects is the ability to have them be disposable.  I live in a two bed-room New York City apartment and I can never find the room to store ANYTHING! I find that the easiest way to create a great looking centerpiece for the table that will please and excite your guests, is to incorporate everyday items that you use all year round, but to repurpose them using a holiday twist.  Another great tip is to take advantage of all the freebies that nature has to offer, by bringing the outdoors in, you can add a element of cozy comfort to your surroundings, especially if the weather is indeed cold outside!

Pine Cones Glamour!

simple-cute-little-christmas-tree-made-of-pine-cones-craft-idea-for-children-diy-table-decor

Pine cones are incredibly versatile, and they smell amazing. Pine cones are generally associated with Christmas, and no wonder, they do bear a striking resemblance to a Christmas tree. Because of their various shapes and sizes, pinecones make an excellent edition to your holiday centerpiece. On top of being every holiday décor MVP, pinecones are  easily obtained or purchased, you can take a walk outside or foraging  in your neighborhood park (make sure and wash them and let air dry if your using this route) or buying them from your local arts and crafts store. After getting the pinecones, all you will need is a glue gun and little candle holders, pots or bowls, shot glasses, glue the bottom of the pine cone and hold in place for 5-10 seconds. Once the pinecone is secure, you can add a little star for an added touch, or leave alone. There are also a variety of things you can do the customize your pine cones such as spray painting or adding some fake snow for an added Christmas touch.

Classy Cranberries!

Use-mistletoe-in-Christmas-decorations-is-a-Christian-tradition-inspired-by-pagan-customs

This is a great way to make use of all the glassware that may locked away in cabinets, with the simple addition of a cranberry bush stem and a few tea lights can really make a chic and classy statement to your table center piece.  One trick when submerging items such as flowers or various greenery in water, is that because of the bending of light beneath the water’s surface, objects appear to be bigger than they actually are.  Try adding a few drops of essential oil to the water such as peppermint, and add a tea light, this is fill the house with a wonderful aroma. Try this with different ideas such as whole acorns or loose cranberries.

Captivating Cinnamon

DIY-christmas-candle-decorations

This has to be one of my favorite projects can I do it every year in my household. I love the smell of cinnamon and it just warms me up from the inside out.  Candles are run very high in cost, but they can be very affordable as well. This project is incredibly easy, and it tastes a few minutes of your time and a few materials. Whole Cinnamon sticks can be purchased from any supermarket or big chain wholesaler. Place the cinnamon sticks around your candles and secure with a colorful ribbon or garland, have fun with this and make it your own unique creation.

Remember, the holidays are about spending time together with friends, loved ones and family. Try out these DIY’s or try them all and make your very own creative, affordable, budget friendly table scape that is sure to impress.

After the chaos of slashed prices and door buster savings  that is “Black Friday,” and the cyber madness that is “cyber Monday” a friendlier, kinder, event takes place the day after known now as “Small Business Saturdays.”

What is Small Business Saturdays you ask?

Small Business Saturday encourages holiday shoppers to patronize brick and mortar businesses that are small and local. Small Business Saturday is a registered trademark of American Express corporation and was first recognized in 2010.

I am all for Small Business Saturdays, its a great cause to help support our local communities and the people who help enrich and provide those essential and unique items for consumers to purchase.

Supporting a small business such as a vineyard or supporting business at a local farmer’s market are great ways to get a jump start on all the exciting holiday festivities that are fast approaching. There is no better way than to ring in the holidays than with friends, family, food and drinks!

I recently visited the Bedell Cellar vineyard and winery, in the North Fork Region of Long Island. It is 80 arches of wonderful, fresh air, nature, beauty and allure. Bedell Cellar is a small family business, completely dedicated to the production of great tasting wine, made with preserving the  surrounding ecosystems within the region.

Farmers markets are a great way to buy fresh, tasty and seasonal produce and contrary  to popular belief, farmers markets aren’t expensive, in fact the prices are highly competitive and are either similar or lower than the prices you would find in a super market.

Farmers Market Meets Wine – Simple dishes to serve during holiday get-togethers.

Root Vegetable Gratin – A gratin is traditionally a  dish with a light browned crust of breadcrumbs or melted cheese. Since the winter season is prime time for delicious root vegetables, such as potatoes, sweet potatoes, yams, turnips, parsnips, celery root, carrots and the list goes on! This is a great recipe to try as a side dish for a holiday dinner or a holiday brunch.

Try paring a rich dish such as a Root Vegetable Gratin with a wine that is high in fresh acidity and citrus food flavor.

  1. Sauvignon Blanc 2014 $40.00 – (100% Sauvignon Blanc) extra dry, Intense citrus taste, saline mineral taste, tart, moderate alcohol, white flowers, crisp, bursting with acid, refreshing.

Tips on planning those Holiday Events

broken-ornaments-1

It is officially less than one month to go until the Christmas Day festivities are on their way! And while many people look forward to these holidays all year, there are quite a few who absolutely dread the idea of the holidays. Mainly because they can be very stressful, especially planning those holiday parties.

Whether you are a seasoned holiday party thrower, or this is your first time throwing a holiday party, it can all be a bit over whelming, or lets keep it real, it can be VERY overwhelming, especially with your already busy life, WHO HAS THE TIME!!!! Not to worry, I’m here to provide quick and easy tips to ensure that your holiday festivities go off without a hitch and are unforgettable, in the best way of course.

Firstly, before throwing an event it is important to plan, one should never underestimate the power of preplanning, it is guaranteed that plans do change, but it is always important to have an overall idea of what you want, and this is always a great place to start.

Here are some things to consider-

Venue – It is the quintessential element , it is the foundation on which every important pillar would build upon to ensure the makings of a successful event. Now, here are some things to consider, the layout of your venture, whether it is a residential or commercial event space, knowing the layout is key. Knowing how to correctly and efficiently to use a space is vital, make sure to know where the entrance, walk through and exits are for the space that you are using, the last thing you need is a hallway or tight corner collision.

Guests-  It is important to know the number of guests that are attending or are planning to    attend your party for a few reasons. Seating and food accommodations depend on how many people you expect to show up, remember it is always important to cater for 5% – 10% more seating and food availability, it is always important to have more then enough than to come up short.

Food – Whether it is buffet style, “pass around the dinner table” style of dinning there are some important things to consider.  Know your guests, their tastes and prepare food items that will cater to the majority.  If Foie Gras served over a bed of port wine marinated truffles and wild mushrooms is your fancy, by all means, enjoy and be merry! When catering to a large crowd or members at a dinner table, easy and simple is the way to go, and fortunately enough, it can be very delish as well.  Large cuts of meats such as a roaster chicken or a beef roast, would be recommended, and simple vegetable sides such as maple-honey roasted whole baby carrots, or pan roasted Brussels sprouts with bacon topped with a balsamic vinaigrette reduction.

Lastly, don’t forget to utilize all the great resources at your disposal such as the internet.

Remember to breathe and that preplanning is key.

I hope that your holiday event is a success!

We are in the midst of New York City Fashion week.  The long awaited events and festivities are taking New York City by storm, as big name designers and couture fashion houses are prepared to show case their collections.

The first step that goes into designing a marketable fashion collection, would be creating a concept, or theme. The second step would be creating the color palette that would best showcase the content and be appealing to the consumer.

A very important component in the fashion industry is Pantone Inc.  The  Pantone Inc. is a corporation headquartered in Carlstadt, New Jersey. The company is best known for its Pantone Matching System (PMS), which is a proprietary color space used in a variety of industries, primarily printing, though sometimes in the manufacture of colored paint, fabric, and plastics.

Several industries such as the fashion, beauty, design sectors incorporate the Pantone color matching system, “Color intelligence System, as well as the color or the year and color of the season.

Passions!

wedding-reception-flowers-decorations-decor-luxury-15c

I often associate the word “passion” with a feeling and not necessarily a thing.  A feeling of absolute happiness, never ending joy and bliss.  A feeling that just fills you up on the inside and completely occupies the inner depths of your being and leaves you wanting, or needing nothing else.

There are four things in this life that makes me feel this way.  One being the love and admiration I have for my family. My willingness to help, motivate, and inspire all the people around me.  My love for everything arts and crafts related and last but not least, SHOPPING!

Now if I were some mad scientist, which I am not, and if I were to gather up all my passions, as if they were ingredients and toss them into a bubbly cauldron of “what to do with my life soup”, there would be a barrage of glitter, party confetti, the music of  loud trumpets, and big neon letters that spelt, “events management!” I will take two cups to go please!

Events management is a passion of mine and what I want to spend my life learning, perfecting and mastering.  I realized this passion of mine when I got my first apartment.  I was so excited to buy cans of paint, tiles, grout, wood finishes, plaster and door knobs, you name it, and I did it!  I have always been a very creative person, I believe it is a trait I got from my mother, who till this very day is an inspiration of mine. I love drawing, repurposing, arranging items, decorating, brain storming themed ideas and executing everything on a budget without sacrificing quality.

There is just something about having an idea, putting it to paper, and watching the allure and granger unfold right in front of your eyes like a manifestation of effort and determination.
