36 hours in Astoria

Tania Garcia

36 hours in Astoria, Queens

Perspectives in Hospitality

As someone that was raised in this always evolving neighborhood I always find new things to do with others. I’ve gone on multiple outings with friends, family, and significant others and always find something new to do or a new place to explore.

9:00: After waking up one can gear up with their workout outfit and take a jog to astoria park were they have a track field for runners to do a morning jog. Alongside the track they have various items to help with once workout. If a work out isn’t once cup of tea walking along the park in the morning is beautiful especially during the fall and spring when the leaves are either falling or flowers are blooming.

11:00: After going back to your home or hotel and getting ready head out to Lite bites diner at 31-91 Steinway St. and order yourself a yummy breakfast or brunch dish. My personal favorite is the neapolitan sandwich with curly fries and a tropical delight smoothie. Go alone with a good book or with a loved one for a good way to start the day.

1:00: After going to eat your going to want to walk because you’ll be stuffed and in that case you should go shopping in Northern Blvd. If you want to take public transportation, you should take the Q66 and get off at Northern Blvd. in front of Old Navy or get on the R or M and get off again at Northern. You can also walk there, it will only be a 15-20 minute walk. There you’ll find shops like Marshalls, Old Navy and Michaels and you can keep finding shops the more you walk back to Steinway like Foot Locker, Baby Blue, Moe’s and much more.

3:00: Around this time most of the kids from the area will be leaving school and if you want to be inside to avoid the crowds but don’t quite want to go home start heading to the Museum of Moving Image located  at 36-01 35 Ave, Astoria. Admission for adults is 15 but will vary depending age and occupation. While there you’ll find props used in infamous movies such as the exorcist, sex in the city and other movies. Your able to touch some exhibits and can create your own films and see how the effects to movies are done.

5:00: After watching how movies are made you might want to watch a movie yourself. A block away from this museum you’ll find UA Kaufman Astoria Stadium a theater with the latest movies and comfortable seating. If you have time before the movie starts I recommend playing in the small arcade they have and ordering some nachos. But let’s be honest movie theater food can get pricey so I recommend sneaking in snacks from the corner deli.

8:00: After the amazing movie you just watched you might be ready to munch on some delicious food. For me you can never go wrong with some juicy burgers. My number one spot for burgers is Bareburger in 33-21 31st Ave, Queens. The burgers there will never disappoint, usually get a classic cheeseburger with fries and a banana foster milkshake. If your above the age of 21 you can enjoy a beer or two from the bar and interact with new people or talk more to your date.

10:00 Around this time you’ll start walking home after a long eventful day.

10:00 A.M Today you will sleep in a little more than you did yesterday but when you wake up and get ready your ready to go out for breakfast with your family. You should go to Sanfords 30-13 Broadway, Astoria. This restaurant is named one of the top places to eat in multiple sites such as yelp and grubhub. You can easily order a breakfast platter and find yourself stuffed.

12:00: After having to deal with your family’s chaos for an hour you might need a little break by yourself and will find yourself in a bookstore called “Astoria Bookshop” in 31-29 31st St, Astoria. There they host book clubs and interesting events to help intrigue into the world of literature. You can ask the employee working that day what book they recommend or if you want to keep to yourself you can always read the blurbs and little notes they put around the room of different books.

2:00: After buying one or several books you should reunite with your family and go to Astoria Bowl located at 19-45 49th St, Queens and can choose the amount of games or rent a lane for two hours which is the option you’ll op for. There you can eat wings or fries if you wish and can even play in the arcade they have in the alley.

4:00: For good pizza for a low price you’ll head to Napoli Pizza where they have the best pizza in the neighborhood located at 33-02 35th Ave, Astoria. There you can order a whole pie or do what my family does. Order individual food and take from each other to taste as much food as we can. Even though you have ordered plates your bill will surprise you by how good the deal is.

6:00 After stuffing your face with pasta and pizza you should go where these two days started. Heading back to Astoria Park you should go and watch the sunset while talking to your family or friends take a lot of pictures.\

8:00 The sun is down and you have completed 36 hours in Astoria to celebrate get an ice cream from one of the ice cream trucks you will always come across.

2pm- We want to get into the water, so we grab our swim wear and head to the beach. On the beach there are 2 tiki bars with open top shell bar so you must grab your great drink as you lay relaxing in the sun. On the beach you will get offered everything, from traveling into the city doing attractions, to braiding hair to weed. Weed is legal in Jamaica and can be smoked on resort.

8pm – We were told we should go to the lagoons. This lagoon is called the Glistening Waters Restaurant and Marina. You can only go at night time to this location to get the full experience. Once you get there they take you on the boat deep into the lagoon remember its pitch black the only light is in the water which lights up. They tell you to jump in and when you do your whole body starts to light up.

11pm- Go to the hottest night club in Montego Bay Margaritaville. Plays all type of hip hop and Jamaican music.  Party goes up until 2AM.

11am back to the pool enjoying what else beautiful Jamaica has to offer.

1Pm- we grab a light lunch and go on a 2 hour horse back ride. The trip is amazing you see all the water you go thru little huts and see the locals. The horses are a little of a pain because if they don’t wanna listen to you they will be eating grass and you get screamed at. Then you go to a stop at a little shack to grab a drink or use the bathroom. Then they ask who wants to horseback ride in the water. Its an amazing thing to do at the end you stand on him and jump off.

6pm – Back in the resort waiting for the night entertainment to start you see dancers all around music playing kids playing its a great time in Royalton.

36 Hours in Iceland

-8:00 a.m.: Arrive at Reykjavik and rent a car.

-9:00 a.m.: Visit Café Loki, which is rumored to be the best and most authentic Icelandic cuisine. Treat yourself to a “Viking” breakfast: Mashed fish, trout, beans salad and sheep’s brain on rye bread. Alongside with fermented shark and dried fish with butter, with Icelandic birch tea. They are also well known for their rye bread ice cream, and offer more traditional breakfast options, such as pancakes.

-10:00 a.m.: Hallgrimskirkja, a Lutheran parish church. This is the largest church and one of the tallest structures in Iceland. For a small fee, you can climb up the stairs to the top of the building and see a breathtaking 360°view of Reykjavik.

-11:00 a.m.: Harpa Islenska Operan- Iceland’s Opera House. The concert hall features a distinctive colored glass façade, which was inspired by the basalt landscape of Iceland. Around the corner is the famous Baejarins Beztu Pylsur,” which is Icelandic translation for “the best hot dogs in town.” The pylsur (hotdog) is typically topped off with sweet brown mustard called pylsusinnep, and remoulade, a sauce made with mayo, capers, mustard and herbs. What makes these hotdogs even more special is that more lamb meat is added over the beef and pork. Famous visitors include Bill Clinton and Metallica.

-1:00 p.m.: Thingvellir National Park. It was declared a UNESCO World Heritage sight in 2004. UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) judge sites that are important to the collective interests in humanity and deems them to be protected by international treaties. This is Iceland’s first national park. The park lies in a rift valley that marks the crest of the mid-Atlantic ridge and the boundary between the North American tectonic plate and the Eurasian.

-3:00 p.m.: The Great Geysir. Is the first known geyser in recorded history, and the English word geyser is derived from Geysir. Geysir is from the Icelandic verb geysa, “to gush.”

-4:00 p.m.: If there is still light out, visit the volcanic crater lake, Kerid Crater. It is one of three most recognizable volcanic craters because it’s approximately 3,000 years old, which is half the age of the others. Along the drive to Hella, make sure to stop by the Icelandic horses that are on the side of the main road. The fuzzy and friendly horses love to be pet and enjoy apples!

-6:00 p.m.: Check-in at Hotel Ranga in Hella, a luxury resort and dining. And hope that the Northern Lights come out that night!

-8:00 p.m.: Dine at the hotel’s Ranga Restaurant. The restaurant is one of Iceland’s leading gourmet destinations. The restaurant is known for their modern Nordic cuisine, such as the smoked puffin, reindeer, lamb, plaice (a flatfish). The restaurant overlooks one of Iceland’s finest salmon rivers.

-7:00 a.m.: Breakfast at the Ranga Restaurant.

-9:00 a.m.: Hike on Solheimajokull Glacier! The glacier is rapidly receding due to climate change, it might not be around for long. The hike can only be done with a professional glacier hiker, crampons and pick axes were provided by our guide. This was my absolute most favorite part of the trip and cannot describe the feelings I had on this 3-hour trek. Ascending to the top of the glacier to only go into the glacier itself was beyond spectacular. There are spots to refill your water bottle and drink straight from a glacial source.

-1:00 p.m.: Lunch as Black Beach Restaurant. Casual dining that offers bigger portions, perfect amount of food after a long and breathtaking hike. The restaurant offers sandwiches, burgers, seafood and steaks. The restaurant has large open windows to view the black beach outside.

-2:00 p.m.: Take a walk on the Black Beach, which is right outside of the restaurant. It is obviously famous for its black sands but also for the basalt sea stacks.

-5:00 p.m.: Blue Lagoon. A geothermal spa, located on a lava field. Located nearby is the Geothermal Power Station, that supplies most of southwestern Iceland. The geothermal waters will wash away the physical but worthwhile stresses from the past day and a half. The timing couldn’t be any more perfect, as the sun sets.

-7:00 p.m.: Dinner at Lava Restaurant. After getting your body fully relaxed, enjoy fine Scandinavian and seafood dining at the Blue Lagoon. No need to travel far to enjoy a delectable Icelandic meal before returning home.
